Lincoln, Notts surrounding villages...help !!!

Hi, my partner and I need to rent within a commutable distance of Lincoln. We would like to move to a village/town with good amenities ie nice shops and a few nice pubs or restaurants. It needs to be within 50mins - at present we have identified Southwell but would love to hear of any other options - Stamford would be my choice but it is just that too far.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

thanks

Claire

I've got a nice three bed terrace to sell in uphill Lincoln. Wink

clairehills · 06/04/2014 19:43

bryonywhisker thanks, we love woodhall spa but i was conscious that it was 40 mins to lincoln with that being the closest place - houses are amazing and so cheap compared to where we live now. Since i like having a wander round at the weekend though I worry that we would always be in the car as everywhere is quite a distance, eg Notts, Stamford etc. Woodhall Spa would be amazing though if we were going to have kiddies.

I was not overstruck on Horncastle and will definitely give the West end a miss as will be surrounded by students all day !!

great soprendo thanks i will definitely check out Burton Road/Westgate/Newport/Rasen Lane/Broadgate area . I saw a nice house in nettleham road, whats that like ?

Also Waitrose is right next to the train station in Newark. Very handy.

Lincoln has really low crime rates throughout & I always feel safe there. There is an area downhill (off the high street) that is quite deprived & probably not what you're looking for

I worked in A&E at Lincoln hospital for many years (left in 2012) & never saw anyone with a stab wound Grin DH works for the drug & alcohol team and would certainly not describe even the worst bits of Lincoln as having a significant drug problem!

thenightsky · 06/04/2014 19:47

Nettleham Road is quite posh on the stretch that runs from Cathedral to the roundabout.

clairehills · 06/04/2014 19:47

thanks herladyship thats really good to know...it just goes to show you cannot always trust what you read or here.

At the moment Uphill Lincoln is sounding very close second to Southwell. How long does it take on the train from newark to lincoln ? Would that be a better option than driving the full distance ?

good suggestion about train from Newark to Lincoln if you lived at Southall, although I think parking at Newark station is expensive & limited?

thenightsky · 06/04/2014 19:49

herladyship we work in the same place, although I'm round the back at PHC and agree that Lincoln probably has much lesser crime rate and drug use rate than other places.

DD has a flat right on the high street near Gowts Bridge and feels safe there.

Procrastinating · 06/04/2014 19:49

Newark to Lincoln on the train takes about 25 minutes.

VivaLeBeaver · 06/04/2014 19:50

Nettleham road is nice. Its one of the quieter of the bigger uphill roads. Especially from the cathedral to the first roundabout....Ruskin ave??

From there to the bypass it would be a bit busier......and closer to St Giles estate.

Procrastinating · 06/04/2014 19:51

Lots of parking at the station, a huge car park, it is the station near the castle as you go in (Newark has 2 stations). £3 a day I think.

clairehills · 06/04/2014 19:51

is St Giles estate one to avoid then vivalebeaver ?

OP posts:
herladyship · 06/04/2014 19:54

ahh, I've only been from Newark's north gate station (great express to kings cross btw). If you can drive Southwell to Newark, park for £3 & get a 25 min train to Lincoln that might be your solution OP?

herladyship · 06/04/2014 19:56

St Giles is about as far away from what you're looking for as it's possible to find in Lincolnshire!

VivaLeBeaver · 06/04/2014 20:10

Ideally you want to be walking distance of Burton Rd and the Bailgate. I'm gutted to be selling the house I own there as I'd quite like to move in myself. Would be nice to be able to walk to the coffee shops in The Bail, the bakers on Burton Rd and the veg shop in The Bail. I could picture myself doing my daily shopping with a wicker basket!

Uphill houses are more expensive. For example the terrace I'm selling was valued at 150k over a year ago, so probably a bit more now. So for that money in other parts of town or the villages you'd get a semi rather than a terrace.

VivaLeBeaver · 06/04/2014 20:11

Some of the Newark to Lincoln trains leave from northgate rather than castle station.

clairehills · 06/04/2014 20:14

thanks vivalebeaver. What is at Burton Road ? or is it just housing close to the old area ? Our 2 bed semi where we are in valued at 270 and due to our new jobs we have a budget of 400 so am guessing we should be able to get something in the old area, although i appreciate they are expensive. Can your recommend any good restaurants in the uphill area ?

OP posts:
herladyship · 06/04/2014 20:18

We eat out uphill most weeks (we're pigs Grin)

There's a good Thai, Mexican, choice of Italians, Indian, tapas, hotel restaurants, good pubs, Browns pie shop, cocktail bars, feel hungry just thinking about it...

clairehills · 06/04/2014 20:20

ha ha herladyship, girl after my own heart. Well thats good to know we like to eat out most weeks and to be within close distance to nice restaurants would be ideal. Do you eat out in the main town centre or just stick to uphill, Where abouts do you live, in old lincoln ?

herladyship · 06/04/2014 20:20

Most of the naice independent eateries are uphill

The university/marina area has all the chains (prezzo, zizzi, wagamama, GBK, chimichangas etc)

VivaLeBeaver · 06/04/2014 20:21

Burton rd has a small co-OP, a really nice independent bakers, a newsagent, off licence, couple of Indian takeaways. There's a few independent shops, a bed shop. There used to be a nice coffee shop, not sure if its still open. There's a Chinese take away.

Nice restaurants uphill are The Old Bakery, there's a nice tapas place called Ole Ole in the Bail, nice Mexican called Tequilas. Cafe Zoot is good and Fourteen is meant to be good.

400k will be a good budget.

herladyship · 06/04/2014 20:23

We live in a village off A46 between Newark & Lincoln.. It's pretty but rather dull! Good for dogs, chickens & small children but now our DC are older (13 & 19) I've got itchy feet

clairehills · 06/04/2014 20:24

Thanks guys, are there any god modern gastropub type places around as opposed to the traditional type pub or bistro etc

OP posts:
clairehills · 06/04/2014 20:24

I can understand that herladyship, so will will it be old lincoln for you, or maybe Southwell :-)

Right, here is every property for sale between 300k and 400k in nice areas of uphill Lincoln I can find. The St Giles ave one isn't in St Giles so don't be put off by that.

The Avenue one is technically West End but on the edge and detached and looks nice so I included it.

Wragby rd is a busy rd so might not be so good.

Queensway is a nice location.
