Congratulations, First Great Western, you dismissed a woman - and just lost a regular customer.

You felt your complaint was dismissed because you were a woman? I am not sure that I got that...

Noise in the quiet carriage IS indeed annoying, the conductor person did not act on your complaint; again, rather annoying. I am not sure it warranted the length of your article, sorry.

Hope you find transport that suits you.

ViviDeBeauvoir · 31/08/2013 11:44

Something about nothing?
A bit long winded and disappointing. I was really hoping for something outrageous at the end but all I got was a damp squib.

kelda · 31/08/2013 11:48

Disappointing article. It takes a very long time to get to the point.

And then there isn't very much point to get to.

There just isn't any evidence to suggest that he dismissed your complaint because you are a woman.

Doodledumdums · 31/08/2013 11:52

Is this a joke?!!!

CecyHall · 31/08/2013 11:52

I must have missed the reason why you felt the guard didn't act because you are female while trawling through all the unnecessary wordiness.

SandStorm · 31/08/2013 11:53

Thing is, you sat through it for 45 minutes without saying anything. Why didn't you mention it to those concerned instead of sitting there waiting for the guard to come along?

NurseRatchet · 31/08/2013 11:54

I gave up at the point were you suggested that you and a multitude of others will never go to Bristol again.

differentnameforthis · 31/08/2013 11:55

Long winded & boring...I gave up!

WayHarshTai · 31/08/2013 11:55

WEll that's two minutes of my life I won't get back.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 31/08/2013 11:56

Why not just ask the other passengers to keep the noise down a bit?

And yes, why all that bollocks about 'I am a journalist, I went to Habs, they were entitled people wearing cheap suits and name-dropping'?

I suppose 'Some people were talking loudly in the quiet carriage, and the conductor was useless when I asked him to sort the situation' is not much of a news story.

clam · 31/08/2013 11:57

So, are you implying the guard was somehow being sexist, yet you (if it is indeed you), repeatedly refer to him as dismissively as "First Great Western Man."
How do you think he might have responded, had you been a man?

MardyBra · 31/08/2013 11:57

Reading to London is about 30 mins not an hour.

If you've exaggerated that, what else have you exaggerated?

NotShortImFunSized · 31/08/2013 12:00

Seems to be a load of old twaddle about a non event.

Sorry.

SaskiaRembrandtVampireHunter · 31/08/2013 12:01

Do they not have editors at the Huffington Post?

MardyBra · 31/08/2013 12:02

"it will explain why I am not likely to be in Bristol again, and why all the writers and artists they've invited to speak or perform might think twice about getting the train there from London, and why"

Well you're cutting your nose off to spite your face then.

And do you really believe that every member of the artistic community will stop travelling to Bristol just because one train conductor didn't kowtow to your request.

I don't doubt that this group of people were noisy and less than pleasant, but you come across as very self-important, snobbish and entitled.

GraduallyGoingInsane · 31/08/2013 12:02

What a self indulgent article! I had to wade through reams of what sounded like a CV of the author's achievements! Clearly no one has taught her to succinctly get to the key issue!

I don't understand why the author thought it was because she was a woman that her complaint wasn't dealt with, although a 'small voiced, pleading look' isn't something I would deal with as a high priority if I was a guard either. To be honest, it's this sort of 'because I am a woman' wailing that gives women a bad name.

Next time, I suggest that if the author is inconvenienced she go directly to a guard, clearly state that she is unhappy with the volume and ask the guard to speak with the individuals. Or just speak to them herself.

What an odd article!

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 31/08/2013 12:06

Must be a pisstake surely?

Made me snort anyway :)

MardyBra · 31/08/2013 12:06

Also presumably you were near the end of your journey by the time you complained. It probably wasn't worth the guard sorting it out.

Be more assertive next time, love, and get it dealt with sooner. Wink

MardyBra · 31/08/2013 12:09

I'm fact, if they'd got on at Reading and you waited 45 mins to complain, surely you would have been stationary in Paddingtn by then?

LucyLastik · 31/08/2013 12:09

Just to add, there is a typo near the end.

RustyBear · 31/08/2013 12:16

Well, seeing that the 13.30 Bristol to Paddington is scheduled to take exactly half an hour between Reading and Paddington, perhaps the guard was stressed because of passengers complaining about the major delay - which the writer doesn't seem to have noticed.....

PuzzleRocks · 31/08/2013 12:18

I got half way through and decided to watch paint dry instead. Frightfully misogynistic of me.

RoastedCouchPotatoes · 31/08/2013 12:19

I love how she said 14:57 as if that exact time mattered. And that, when it was happening, she was checking her watch and memorising it.
