Awful experience in tesco wwyd

Hi

I was in tesco earlier today buying some shopping. I had my 4yo and 7 week old with me. I am currently on maternity leave from work (this is relevant)

My friend works in tesco so I go there every now and again to see her even though its not local. There is a very loud and rude man who works with her. She gets on well with him and finds him quite amusing. Most others think he is rude and very sexist. His attitude towards women is disgusting. He is 48 years old, single and lives with his mum never having had his own home or ltr - I know this by what my friend has told me in the past.

I went to his till today because it had the shortest queue. I generally try to avoid it.

He was scanning my shopping through and started commenting on what I was buying. He said I should not be buying brand named items because ive got kids. I asked him what he meant and he very loudly said that it was obvious I was on benefits and he was the one paying for my shopping out of the tax he pays every month. People like me just fire kids out to get his money and housing. People turned to look and I was mortified. I bought some new clothes for dd1 and he had a go at me saying I should be buying from charity shops so I didnt have to claim so much of his money.

I was really upset by this point and he wasnt quiet about it.I left my shopping and walked away to the kiosk to buy cigarettes for my elderly neighbour. He doesnt go out much and myself and another neighbour take it in turn to buy his fags for him and anything else he needs (he gives us money)

The man came up to the kiosk and started again saying how he couldnt afford to smoke or buy brand named stuff because I was taking half his wages from him. I asked him to leave me alone and he was shouted over by a manager to go back on his till.

I went over to the manager who shouted to him and she was very dismissive. She tried to laugh it off saying oh whats he like and pointed out that she recognised me from seeing me with my friend who works there.

I left very upset and to be honest im still upset 12 hours later.

What should I do next? Im quite scared of this man I have heard stories about people leaving their job because he was so horrible to them after they had complained about him.

Should I go straight to tesco head office with my complaint?

This might sound far-fetched but I am not a troll this honestly happened. I still cant believe his attitude.

They are normally very good at resolving complaints.

If not then: [email protected]

He is the CEO. Actually you can probably CC him in the same email to the first address.

You should Deffo complain. Disgusting behaviour. I'm sorry you went through that but don't let this pathetic person have any more negative effect on your life.

GwendolineMaryLacey · 11/08/2013 10:39

Definitely complain. The fact that your friend works there and knows him is a red herring. You were a customer and subjected to shocking verbal abuse. That needs attention from his bosses.

EeTraceyluv · 11/08/2013 10:43

Bloody right - I would have quite possibly punched him and been arrested myself...This is unacceptable and he should be sacked. Tosser.

hectorslarry · 11/08/2013 10:51

Thanks everyone. I have emailed their customer service department to see where my complaint should be headed. Im still quite shocked but more angry now than anything

You've done the right thing in complaining, what a horrible thing to have happened.

Mummyoftheyear · 11/08/2013 22:29

Awful. He might bully your friend if you complained though. Horrible.

Saffyz · 12/08/2013 04:41

Glad you've complained. He shouldn't get away with speaking to people like that.

ArtisanLentilWeaver · 12/08/2013 04:47

Boycott shopping in tesco.

Definitely complain. Head office, signed for letter.

tethersend · 13/08/2013 10:34

Blimey. That's a stackable offence, surely?

Then he'd have to claim benefits and you could pay for them Wink

Havent read all the posts but yes write a strongly worded letter to the MD. I had to do this many years ago at a different High Street company and I stated clearly that I was not after compensation, I would not shop at the shop again until the member of staff was sacked, and that I was prepared to discuss the matter further if they required. The Sales Director actually called me and advised me that there had been previous issues and complaints, so they were grateful for me coming forward.

HarrietSchulenberg · 13/08/2013 11:25

I once had a similar issue with a security guard trailing me round the shop, accusing me of theft the whole way, because I had given ds1 and 2 ginger biscuits to munch on the way round the shop. The packets were in the trolley to be scanned at the till.

I am quite a tough cookie usually but when I went to Customer Services to make acomplaint I just burst into tears and had to take the complaint form home to fill in as I just couldn't speak, I was that upset. I posted the complaint to the store manager.

Tesco couldn't have been more helpful. The store manager phoned me the same day that he received the complaint. He asked if he could come to visit me at home to discuss, but I misheard him and thought he wanted to bring the security guard with him (he didn't). So I said no. I live 15 miles from the shop so it would have been a considerable time out of his day to do that.

He told me on the phone that the guard had been rude to customers before and had been disciplined. He asked what I would like the outcome to be so I said to make sure that the guard didn't make anyone feel as bad ad he'd made me feel ever again. The guard was given a lengthy training programme about customer service and I was asked to visit yhe grocery manager when I was next in the store.

The grocery manager presented me with an enormous bunch of flowers, vouchers and massive Easter eggs for dses (it was just before Easter, not afterGrin ).

To be fair to Tesco they do take their staff behaviour seriously and if I was you I would make that complaint. If you don't, how would Tesco know that their staff are being so obnoxious?

Mumoftwoyoungkids · 15/08/2013 12:53

Are you on Facebook?

How about a staus along the lines of

"Susan Smith had the most awful experience in Tescos the other day. Anyone got any ideas who I should complain to?"

Making sure that "Tescos" is properly named in best FB fashion.

If you don't have a senior customer service person contacting you by the end of th day then I'll be very surprised!

insancerre · 15/08/2013 12:58

any update?
agree with mumoftwoyoungkids
this shockingly bad example of customer service needs publicising
post on facebook and twitter

Hi everyone thanks for your messages.

I haven't heard anything back from tesco at all.

Thank you to whoever posted the email address of the CeO. I have now forwarded my last email straight to him asking why 3 days later I haven't even received an acknowledgement.

I shall let you know the outcome

Well done Hector, my friend is a supervisor at the CO OP, and she'd go positively feral on someone who did that.

Dont just wait, keep complaining til they get sick of you, and if he starts up again, tell him in no uncertain terms to f off.

and if hes on a 16 hour contract, hes unlikely to pay tax.

Mummyoftheyear · 16/08/2013 22:26

Ooh well done! I will be watching to see whether you get a decent response ;)
Good luck.
