Hello.

The menfolk at MNHQ are going all hairy to support Movember and raise money for research into prostate cancer and testicular cancer.

And we hoped you might want to join in by following their increasingly hirsute progress, lobbing them hair-follicle-stimulating virtual biscuits and maybe even donating a quid or two.

Today's the day it all sprouts starts, so we're going to post up the names of all the contenders and then post up pics of their clean-shaven chops - but not necessarily in the same order.

And then invite you to match the pic to the name, just for a bit of a larf.

OK, so the names are:

DarrenMumsnet - the one who sorts stuff out and shaved his whole beard off to take part

ShamTech - the creator of PMs, gawd luv him

Tech - the original Tech, who built MN from nuffink

GeorgeTech - the latest Tech in the Towers

PeterNotaTech - he's actually an architect but he shares an office with us

PatrickMumsnet - runs Mumsnet Academy and has Leonardo DiCaprio tendencies

Can you match the chin shot to the MNHQ Man?

Do have a go - and we'll let you know if you're right.

Sounds to me like you are in the wrong line of work moon.

EdsRedeemingQualities · 01/11/2012 18:19

I think this is absolutely fine.

It's the things where someone goes to somewhere exciting to climb a big mountain, which costs thousands of pounds to fund, and then gives a much smaller amount probably to the charity they are doing it 'for'.

That kind of confuses me.

EdsRedeemingQualities · 01/11/2012 18:19

Growing a beard costs nothing. That's the beauty of it.

ScrambledSmegsEvilTwin · 01/11/2012 18:34

Prostate cancer still has a 'taboo' quality that breast cancer for example doesn't. A lot of people I know are taking part in Movember this year, and will be posting regular FB updates about their 'taches and the reason why they're growing them. And obviously linking to the Movember site too. So in that sense they will be raising awareness.

My friends, although they're younger men, mostly have fathers, uncles, grandfathers etc - so male relatives will be receiving the message too, I bet.

Yes, it's anecdotal and not data, but when you can actually see a positive message being spread you believe in what they're trying to do.

I love Movember. I think it doesn't excellent awareness raising, I had never before seen my male friends sitting in the pub talking about prostate cancer until Movember. It is fun, free and engaging, well done MNHQ men. Are you going for trendy Shoreditch 'taches?

I genuinely can't see why someone would come on this thread and piss on the parade. Most peculiar.

UltraBOF · 01/11/2012 18:38

Theres no expensive advertising behind it, that I'm aware of. It's a simple, cheap, unobtrusive way to get blokes being blokey and competitive about their beards while learning about male cancers, in even the vaguest of ways, via Facebook, other social networks and the odd newspaper article/segment on morning telly-kinda thing. I do know someone who harps on about stuff like this in real life (nothing is ever good enough, always finds something to moan about etc), and they come across as an absolutely massive twat with a dried pea for a heart. I try to avoid them.

Lougle · 01/11/2012 18:45

Another worthy campaign is 'Don't be a spanner - check your nuts' by Screwfix. They sell merchandise with the slogan on, and 'Get it Done' slogans. All their profits from those items goes to the cancer charity 'Everyman'.

I think it's fabulous, tbh.

Moondog, come one, you are someone who relies on evidence base for your work, but you must realise that statistics on this sort of thing will be impossible to unpick from general trends in accessing healthcare, etc.

MrsSalvoMontalbano · 01/11/2012 18:49

Wondered when someone was going to trot out the 'if one single man...' Bingo!
Fine, grow a moustache if you like, just don't expect others to pay you for your magnaninous gesture - cough it up yourself!

moondog · 01/11/2012 18:52

I don't know about that Lougle.
The annual report has some useful stuff about funds raised and increase in website traffic which seems an advance on 'raising awareness'.

Oooh, aren't the professional cynics big and clever! We sentimental fools will see the error of our ways, soon enough.

Well done guys!

GouhlishGordonsAaaaahlive · 01/11/2012 19:15

Thank you MNHQ men, my FIL sadly died of prostate cancer this morning. Raising awareness can only be a good thing.

ArrivedAtPanicStation · 01/11/2012 19:27

yeah stop being miserable bitches and start talking about ging gang goolies

cocolepew · 01/11/2012 19:39

All the male teachers do Movember at my DDs High School. Therefore the message of checking yourself and watching out for male cancers is reaching a few hundred young men and a few hundred young women, most of whom will end up with a male partner.

It's a good, fun way to raise awareness and money.

cocolepew · 01/11/2012 19:40

I like the look of number two

Ponders · 01/11/2012 19:42

no 2 is George

DreamySleepyNightySnoozySnooze · 01/11/2012 19:47

Blimey. This is not the place for this discussion. They're trying to do a good thing, whether you approve or not, so if you don't then just ignore it.

2 - GeorgeTech
3 - PeterNotaTech
4 - Tech
5 - DarrenMumsnet

I've put number 2 as George, cos I like the name George and I like the look of number 2? [hwink]

Tuttutitlookslikerain · 01/11/2012 19:47

DH is doing it this year. He is on a course at work at the moment, with men ranging from 21 onwards. It has got them all talking, so is a good thing. FIL has just been diagnosed with bladder cancer so DH has been talking about the symptoms of that.

Last year, all the teachers at DS2's school took part and some of the took the opportunity to raise the subject of checking their balls with the boys! I was really impressed that they did this, not every family has a man in it anymore, so some of these boys wouldn't have had a clue, had it not have been for the teachers.
