If your partner was circumcised, would you have your son circumcised too?

I noticed from another thread that a few women whose partners are circumcised seemed to talk very positively about it for various reasons, either because they believed it was cleaner, or they liked the way it looked, etc.
If your partner is not circumcised, I can well understand it if you would never dream of circumcising your son, as it is not really the norm in this country anyway. But if you do have / have had a circumcised partner, and you like the fact that he is circumcised, what would you feel about having your son circumcised too?
Would it be important for son to match his father?
Would it be inconsistent for you to like the fact that the father is circumcised, but not get son circumcised?
Especially if you have familiarity with circumcision in the family, I would be interested to know your thoughts.
What would you do?

No.
DH is, DH's Dad was (Irish Catholic, although it's not that common there now) and DH thought DS should be too - but no. GP said it wasn't done except for medical reasons, I didn't want it done unnecessarily, DH wasn't so fussed about it that he was prepared to spend time and money tracking down a doc who would be prepared to do it.

My Dad is as well, as it happens, but for medical reasons. If DS should need it doing later for medical reasons, so be it. Otherwise, no.

PropertyNightmare · 03/10/2012 00:23

No. I consider circumcision for non medically essential reasons to be mutilation tantamount to child abuse.

SirBoobAlot · 03/10/2012 00:25

Not your body, not your choice.

If it was your daughter, you wouldn't let someone cut her. Why do that to your son? There are no medical benefits, just risks.

Have never understood this bollocks about children having to "match" their parents. I'm disabled; should I teach DS to walk with a stick so we are the same? Of course not, that would be ridiculous.

It is assault. If someone took a knife to any other part of your childs body, you would scream. Just because that's a doctor (or a religious teacher) does not make that okay.

SirBoobAlot · 03/10/2012 00:30

Nikoletta, please spare your third son. There was a fantastic article by Save our Sons recently, where a mum was talking about how she explained to the older son about why his younger brother looked different. She told him that she had made a big mistake and she was very sorry, but knew better now. The boy replied in such a wonderful way: "Mummy I'm so pleased you protected my little brother".

HolyAutumnGoldBatman · 03/10/2012 00:33

No.

I like men with tattoos. DP has tattoos. I won't be tattooing my newborn son so that he matches his father.

Would you cut off your daughters clitoral hood? Just because some randomer, some time in the past declared it a good thing to do?

cynner · 03/10/2012 01:56

VforVienetta, I have reported your comment.

My husband, father and brother are circumcised (Jewish family). There's NO way we would have done this to our boys.

"His penis, his choice", to paraphrase an annoying, but applicable, Mumsnet saying.

Religion doesn't excuse you from taking responsibility for your own decisions (lots of people think it does, but that is crap).

AdoraBell · 03/10/2012 02:29

I wouldn't. No reason, either religious or cultural or otherwise, to do so. OH was circumsised as a young boy due to an infection. Only a medical need would make me do that to a child.

monsterchild · 03/10/2012 02:49

I can't believe the comments on here! really, V your antisemitism is showing!

CheerfulYank · 03/10/2012 03:02

DH is and DS is. I wasn't sure about getting DS done, but I was so out of it and the doctor was so professional and firm and...well, it was done.

I am pregnant now and told DH that I will not be having this one done if he is a boy. I feel no need for "matching penises" around here.

It is hard, though, because I am American and everyone's is done. It's much more odd if you aren't and I'm possibly setting my (possible) son up for a lot of locker room teasing. But I'm still not doing it.

ShobGiteTheKnid · 03/10/2012 03:12

Hmmm, if my partner had had his genitals mutilated would I make sure my son's were too? Er, no. But then, I'm not a sadist.

First of all: Congrats CY! I hadn't heard.

Second of all: I am Jewish. My husband is not. Our son was not circumcised because I am not religious and my husband was against it. If I was religious I would have discussed it more thoroughly with him.

And V you are vile.

OnlyWantsOne · 03/10/2012 06:04

I think it's very very sad that people can still find excuses to cut off a peice of completely healthy tissue from a defenceless infant.

Horrific.

GColdtimer · 03/10/2012 06:13

Dh is (infection at 5 although they probably wouldn't be so quick to lop off his foreskin these days).

He said he would never put a child though the sheer agony and the thought of doing it to a precious baby makes him feel physically sick. So no. But have been on too many of these threads to know the most compelling arguments in the world will not stop those doing it for faith reasons going ahead

CheerfulYank · 03/10/2012 07:52

Thanks, Tee! We're really excited. :)

ShobGiteTheKnid · 03/10/2012 10:22

Mellower really? You have no idea what she said but that is your response? You deserve a ban for that.

ShobGiteTheKnid · 03/10/2012 10:23

(and yes, reported)

Mellower · 03/10/2012 10:40

Yes I feel a ban coming on - but like I say I do not like to see my friend being bullied!!

Mellower · 03/10/2012 10:40

Report away! Smile
