Do you have a saftey gate across the bedroom door?

A social worker told a friend of mine that a baby gate across the childs bedroom door is against health and safety rules.
I asked at the fire station and they said it is not and there are no government guidelines on this.
The SW still insists it is wrong and says that no one has them there, everyone else has them at the top of the stairs.
Where do you have yours?

we have one across DSs door and at the top and bottom of the stairs and across the door to the kitchen - he's not so bad now (he's 2.8) but when he first got active he was like lightening and it just made my life so much easier. I'm pretty sure that he could get over it if he was really motivated but as far as I'm concerned, it's the same as having him in a cot - it's just the whole room! (he climbed out of his cot at 10 months so this was our compromise). I'm going to have to take it down pretty soon when we try and get him out of nappies at night so he has access to the toilet so I think there is a upper age limit for it anyhow.
I'm not in the UK but I'm pretty sure that we had it across there when we had our homestudy for adoption (for our next DC) and the social worker never mentioned it.

Across his door but will move to the stairs when we start potty training for the same reason as Shangers.

The SW is whacked.

Bottom of stairs (DS sleeps downstairs) and on one room as there's no door on it. None on his room.

south345 · 22/02/2012 06:37

It is illegal to lock them in the bedroom I think but if there's a gate I think it's different, I have one on ds' he's just learnt to get out of his cot so and can open doors so I would be forever worried if there wasn't one. He can open the safety gates downstairs but his bedroom one is a bit stiffer.

Flyingoutofcontrol · 22/02/2012 07:02

Both. One on his door and one on the top of the stairs.

However, we sleep on a different floor curse you younger me who thought this layout was quirky so going for safety.

Will re-evaluate at toilet training time, and I expect the gate on his room will be moved to the doorway of the guest room to prevent him jumping on grandpa when he stays Grin

StickAForkInMeImDone · 22/02/2012 07:08

We have one on DS bedroom door and one at top of stairs. DS has learnt (learned??) to flip over his cot so wanted the extra reassurance.
DS seems to like having the one on his bedroom. He closes it and shouts "no no" to anyone who tries to enter Grin

Kayzr · 22/02/2012 07:11

There's one on the bedroom door here. Recommended by HV.

itsybitsy08 · 22/02/2012 07:12

Well as I don't have stairs in my house it is over bedroom door. I wasn't too impressed with dd thinking she had total run of the house when she deigned to get up in the middle of the night - go into kitchen with chair from dining room climb onto workbench to reach the crisp cupboard, help self, wander to sitting room pull out all DVDs and manage to turn tv on to somen totally inappropriate late night horror movie before getting scared and coming to wake me up! Grin so yeah the baby gate stays on her bedroom door

Fuchzia · 22/02/2012 07:58

We don't have a landing but doors that open directly onto opposite sets of stairs that then join up two steps later and turn sharpley (crazy old house) there is nowhere else to put a gate and no way would I be happy for my two year old to climb round the bends in the stairs at night. Gate is definitely the safest option for us.

I don't have any gates anywhere and was told off by my Hv for my irresponsible attitude, she said that she would check her next nearly new sale so that I can 'at least' put one in dds bedroom door. You can't win can you?

You can't safely attach a gate to the top of our stairs so a gate on his bedroom door is safer than a tumble downstairs

CMOTDibbler · 22/02/2012 15:37

DS had one on his door when he came out of a cot - I didn't want him getting up and roaming around.

We never had gates anywhere else though

mousymouseafraidofdogs · 22/02/2012 15:38

we had one until dc (20m) was able to open it. was a bit pointless to keep it then...

Quenelle · 22/02/2012 15:50

Health and safety rules only apply in the workplace not in your house, so the social worker is talking nonsense.

Anyway, we do have one at the top of the stairs. We put one on DS's bedroom door when we moved him into a bed but we took it off because he has never got out of bed of his own accord, I think he's a bit scared of the dark.

notso · 22/02/2012 15:51

I've never had one at the top of the stairs or on a bedroom. We tried for a bit at the top of the stairs as DS1 sleep walks but I found him trying to climb on top of it in his sleep which was more dangerous than his usual walking.
In this house we don't have any gates, but DS2 is 14 months and waits for me to come before he goes upstairs.

seeker · 22/02/2012 15:52

I don't think it's illegal - but I think it's horrid.

Sirzy · 22/02/2012 15:57

Falling down the stairs, or getting into the bathroom would be more horrid

seeker · 22/02/2012 16:03

That's why you have the stair gate at the top of the stairs. Oh, and if you don't want th in HT bathroom, you could shut the door?

AMumInScotland · 22/02/2012 16:11

There aren't any "Health & Safety" rules that apply to children in their own home. She's talking out of her arse.

Personally, I didn't use one there, but different layouts of houses, and different temperaments of children, mean that you have to make the best choices you can about safety etc for your own situation.

PigeonPie · 22/02/2012 16:13

We had gates on the DSs bedrooms so that they were safe and DS1's toys were safe from DS2 when they were little. The gates don't shut off sound or light, just keep them safe so I can't see why they would be against H&S 'rules'.

We also had a gate at the top of the stairs and despite the fact that they are 6 and 4 now we still have it to make sure that if I have to get up in the night to sort them out I don't fall down the stairs so it's more for my safety than theirs now!

thisisyesterday · 22/02/2012 16:15

we've never had one on bedroom doors. we have one at the top of the stairs to stop them going down during the night.

AWimbaWay · 22/02/2012 16:22

How on earth would a stair gate stop a cat? Is it six foot tall and made of solid greased metal?

We don't have one on the bedroom door, just at bottom of stairs, but can't see why it would be a problem.
