Do you have a saftey gate across the bedroom door?

A social worker told a friend of mine that a baby gate across the childs bedroom door is against health and safety rules.
I asked at the fire station and they said it is not and there are no government guidelines on this.
The SW still insists it is wrong and says that no one has them there, everyone else has them at the top of the stairs.
Where do you have yours?

I used to have one on DD's bedroom door to stop her wandering in the night. It was never a problem. The fire fighters who came to fit smoke alarms commented that he might try that with his DS who kept coming out his room now he was in a bed and not a cot! Grin He did say never, ever lock anyone in a room. A gate across the door is NOT locking them in a room.

It depends how old. My 1 yo dd does because she is an avid crawler and has crawled out in the past - I don't want to shut her bedroom door. My 3 yo doesn't because she might need to go to the toilet. We do at the top and bottom of the stairs.

Why is a stairgate on a door "horrid" - or any more horrid than one on the stairs? Confused Don't understand that at all.

We have one on DS's door - can't put one at the top of the stairs and I don't want to risk him falling down the stairs in the night! Also have one on the kitchen doorway so I can still see him playing in the dining room while I cook.

we had one on ds's bedroom, no use putting one on the stairs as his older sisters wouldn't remember to shut it after they went through. They didn't need to be in his room, so more sensible to put one there

SW is talking rubbish.

As I said one on the top of the stairs isn't possible with our stairs, shutting the bathroom door achieves nothing as he can open it. Still not sure how ensuring a child is safe is horrid?

ours it at the top of the stairs

Never had stair gates Blush and DS never fell down stairs. Actually did have one on his playroom door (downstairs) to keep him in Grin.

We have gates across the top and bottom of the stairs (fixed). DS (2.6) can open those now, so they're mainly in place so the dog can't get upstairs. I also started putting a travel gate on DS's door at bedtime, because he'd never stay in his room otherwise. At least this way he can settle himself to sleep in the safety of his own room, rather than doing god knows what in the other bedrooms, bathroom and toilet. I normally take the gate off as soon as I know he's asleep.

We used to have one on DD's doorframe as it seemed the best place to have one, she loved it and used to close it behind her when she wanted to play in her room - there were tears when we took it away!

loopydoo · 23/02/2012 21:22

The HV is making it up as she goes along.

On her next visit, just say in an assertive way that it's your choice and as they're are no rules on it, then it's staying put.

StetsonsAreCool · 23/02/2012 21:28

We have one at the top of the stairs, mainly to make DD to stop running headlong down them - at least she has to stop at the gate to open it (and she nearly can).

When she moves from her cot to a bed, I'll move the gate to her door to begin with - I don't want her to have the temptation of all the upstairs rooms while I'm not there.

MegIet · 23/02/2012 21:32

Both.

The dc's used to have one across each of their bedroom doors and I still have one at the top of the stairs.

Not so much for safety, more to alert me to the fact when they were buggering about and coming out of their rooms. We still have the one on the stairs just in case a mad axe murderer breaks in, I hope he's flummoxed by it and decides against trying to kill us Grin.
