Oh, we are such a bunch of intellectuals here, Bessie. Proud to have entertained you and glad you decided to say hello to us!
If there's anybody else out there just watching, don't be shy.

PhoenixRisingFromTheAshes · 05/04/2011 00:01

Hello Bessie then!! ::waves::

There's another photo on this Facebook page which I thinking new but I haven't seen it anywhere else. Hopefully you can see it. It's lovely...

PassTheTwiglets · 05/04/2011 07:10

Oh ladies, what were you doing posting those Fermez Les Yeux photos at such a late hour?! I was in bed, on the mobile, and that was a lovely little treat :) Maud, your "yeah right" photo did make me giggle!

Can't see that Facebook piccie, Phoenix.

Gosh, Twiggy, you're up early today.

I am sulking because I can't get out into the garden, because it's raining. Oh, Massive, there is still no televisual apparatus. Nation's favourite department store could not find us the right telly - they thought they had one in a far-flung town but that turned out to be an illusion - so we have given up and ordered one from another retailer. I'll believe it when I see it (I think we'll end up having the same problem, but Bloke did it while I was out and he was Unsupervised. Why do men only show initiative when you don't want them to, eh?) So now I can't even swoon over the ironing board to N&S while I tackle the ironing mountain.

I need something to brighten my morning

PassTheTwiglets · 05/04/2011 10:05

Oh, I'm up early every day - let's just say that I never knew that 5o/c came in a morning version as well as an afternoon version, before I had children :)

MissTwiglets is sulking today because they're going on a school trip and for once I'm not going. But I have been on every school trip she's ever been on, right since YR so I think I'm allowed one off!

Maud, Can you come and do my garden for me? I keep looking at it and sighing, knowing that it could be a lovely little garden if only I could be arsed knew what to do.

LOL at Bloke being "Unsupervised" - the use of a capital letter can really add humour to a word, can't it? I do like capitalising. My cleaner is currently doing my ironing - it's her last day today and I am dreading it... so awkward and embarrassing Blush

Is it me or does MrT look like he's spent a little too much time at the train bar, in that photo?!

PassTheTwiglets · 05/04/2011 10:07

Maud, has GardenGirl been to this? I'm currently sorting out tickets for us. We went to the last one which was really good, although MissTwiglets was terrified of the Autons and we had to be shown a different way in!

TheSmallPrint · 05/04/2011 10:25

Morning ladies.

Twigs Smallboy Major would love that. Last summer we went to the Dr Who Proms at the Albert Hall which was brilliant. Sadly I am getting very excited by the adverts coming on the tele telling us that Dr Who is coming soon....

TheSmallPrint · 05/04/2011 10:25

Good luck with your cleaner btw.

TheSmallPrint · 05/04/2011 10:27

Maud, you have my sympathy re Unsupervised Men. Mr Small has been messing about with our tv and new blue ray / surround sound nonsense. It has involved many visits to currys for new cables and lots of unrepeatable language.

I have my Spooks DVDs though so all is forgiven - as long as I can get the bloody blueray thingy working!

ComeIntoTheGardenMaud · 05/04/2011 10:40

Yes, the capitalising of words for Humorous and Dramatic Effect is one of the MN stylistic tropes that I most enjoy.

Twiggy - I shall ignore that slur on the good Mr Thornton's character. I am quite sure that he would not be sos base as to become inebriated on a public conveyance, although we know that he enjoys wine in moderation.

::swoon::

I'm not offering to schlep over to La Maison de Twiggy to do the garden but if you post a picture of it or tell me how big it is and what you think needs doing, I can probably suggest a shopping list of plants.

We haven't been to the Doctor Who shows because (as I recall) it's only the aliens and monsters and Girl really wants to see The Doctor who isn't, as I understand it, there in person. Wish we'd known about the Doctor Who prom, though. Will there be one this year?

And you're torturing me, aren't you Small, with your talk of surround sound TV and blu-ray?

::sobs gently::

TheSmallPrint · 05/04/2011 10:46

No the proms thing isn't every year, I think the previous one was a couple of years before that. David Tennant didn't turn up to that one but we had Matt Smith turn up last year and Amy Pond and her bloke (can't remember his name!) hosted the whole thing. It was excellent. I was amazed that Smallboy enjoyed the music as much as he did but there is a lot to be said for the power of music form a live orchestra.

Not trying to torture you re the Blueray, it hasn't been working for days and becuase it's all interlinked with the tele we have been a bit tele-less also.

TheSmallPrint · 05/04/2011 10:47

Speaking of plants Maud, may I pick you brain? Is there a nice climber that will work on a north facing wall in heavy flinty soil?

ComeIntoTheGardenMaud · 05/04/2011 10:59

Ah, now, because Girl is young she did not much mind when David Tennant left Doctor Who and would have been very happy to see Matt Smith and even happier to see Amy Pond.

What kind of climber do you want? Something perennial (permanent) or annuals?

PassTheTwiglets · 05/04/2011 11:13

I didn't realise Smallboy Major was into Dr Who. We'd love to have gone to the proms, bet that was fantastic! I am trying to avoid Dr Who spoilers (I usually fail) so haven't seen any adverts yet. I understand your excitement - Dr Who returning to TV is seriously one of the highlights of my year!

But, but, but.... Amy Pond and "her bloke can't remember his name)" ?!?! How can you forget the lovely Rory?! I have a leeetle crush on Rory he's gorgeous! And very funny too.

That's so sweet of you to offer to suggest some plants for me, Maud. I was just joking, really, though I may well take you up on that at some point, thank you! We have one flower bed and it is lovely in summer but is very sparse and sad-looking during the winter.

Oooooh, what a gorgeous picture of MrT, Maud! His eyes bore right into you*, don't they? It reminds me very much of this photo

And I found this piece of gorgeousness whilst I was looking for the above photo too.

  • and if that doesn't get Spiro's attention, nothing will Grin

ComeIntoTheGardenMaud · 05/04/2011 11:13

Anyway, as this means I can delay getting on with Stuff, here are some suggestions from the Royal Horticultural Society:

Climbers for north-facing walls. I would go for the rose Alberic Barbier or the hydrangea (which is much, much nicer than those pink and blue footballs grown in parks). If you like Virginia creeper, get Chinese Virginia creeper which has more attractive leaves and is less rampant and so less likely to wreck the wall beneath it. There are some other roses suggested here.

Is the underlying soil sandy (I think that's what's most common with flint but this is alien to me and my sarf London clay)? The bottom of a wall is a tough location for a plant, because if it's in a rain shadow the ground will be dry and if the soil is flinty it's likely to be fast-draining, which makes it even drier. So you may need to dig out some of the existing soil and add topsoil and/or compost to provide more organic matter and nutrients.

PassTheTwiglets · 05/04/2011 11:16

Oh heck, MissTwiglets sobbed and sobbed when David Tennant left (as did her mother, ahem) and she wrote him a heartbreakingly sad letter, which ended "goodbye forever" :(

TheSmallPrint · 05/04/2011 11:25

Maud, definately something that I don't have to replant and perhaps grows quite quickly (I am lazy and impatient and a rubbish gardener). I love Wisteria but that takes a billion years to grow and likes south doesn't it? We have ivy on the house but it's not that pretty so something flowering would be nice. Funnily enough there was a HUGE Hydrangea in the place where I want the climber but it was a blue ball one that always reminds me of old people's houses. Doesn't the blue indicate a soil type? We chopped it down Blush. The soil is chilterns so clay and flint I think.

Twigs, of course he's Rory but my brain is getting worn out as I get older and these things don't come to me quickly and I'm too lazy to Google Grin.

Very nice photos btw.

ComeIntoTheGardenMaud · 05/04/2011 11:29

That last pic puzzles me, Twiggy. Why is he leaning on the fireplace? I hope he doesn't set fire to his trousers. Adds new meaning to the word smouldering.

Mr Thornton is, to add to his many other commendable qualities, a connoisseur of fine wines. Here he is partaking of red wine

Drink to me only with thine eyes

Right. To business.

SupermassiveLBD · 05/04/2011 12:19

Grr, I have missed the morning flurry of activity and I have Business with an extremely derogatory capital B to attend to, so haven't time for a proper drool.
I hope to be back later on.

PassTheTwiglets · 05/04/2011 12:36

Maud, to asnwer your question about the fireplace, I imagine the photographer was female.

Turn to the side a bit, Richard... a bit more... a bit more... in fact turn right round... Now just lean over a bit... and now look back at me... thaaaaaaat's it.

SupermassiveLBD · 05/04/2011 12:45

Lovely mental picture, there Twiggy, of the lady photographer, contemplating such splendors, and bent on making the most of them.
RA: ' ''Er excuse me, but don't you need to switch your camera on before you take a photo?''

DumSpiroSpero · 05/04/2011 12:56

Yes Twigs - you've got my attention - mainly cos I'm at work and can't open the bl**dy thing!

Probably won't be online later either as it is our wedding anniversary today and I am being cooked for tonight.

TheSmallPrint · 05/04/2011 12:59

Happy Anniversary to you Sprio, hope the cooking turns out OK. I was promised that Mr Small would cook on Mothers Day. In the end I did it because he was messing about with the Blueray for over an hour. Not impressed.

SupermassiveLBD · 05/04/2011 13:06

Happy Anniversary, from me too. And I too hope the meal turns out well.
