poorly toddler/dog needing walking

jooseyfruit · 07/12/2010 11:14

would you leave poorly toddler (temp, bad cough)with his sensible 13yo db, so i can take the dog out for a walk.

-will only be out for 40 minutes
-i will have phone on me and won't be more than ten mins from home
-ds1 doesn't feel comfortable taking dog out yet (3 stone mad puppy who lunges)
-snow and ice means i can't bundle up and shove ds2 in the pram.

wwyd?

Your call really.

We were all ill last week and there were two days our dog didn't get walked at all.

Not ideal but there you go. Our dog isn't too bothered as long as she's not on her own without being walked.

Only you can make the call of your oldest son though.

SpringHeeledJack · 07/12/2010 11:23

I'd be inclined to stay in with the dog and kids

I find we get a bit slacker on walking when we have Other Things on. DP has to run round the block with 'em when he gets home from work

...lucky him Wink

jooseyfruit · 07/12/2010 12:03

dog's already been out with dh this morning for half an hour, so he's had something.

dog just gets a bit cabin feverish and starts chewing and being daft
he's our first dog and i'm a bit pfd about him!

Yes of course. A 13 year old should be more than capable of looking after a toddler for an hour!

Enjoy your walk!

jooseyfruit · 07/12/2010 12:18

I hate being stuck indoors.
I'll see how ds1 feels about it and remind him about the extra money I gave him to buy the family christmas presents, which he spent on a jumper for himself!.

ItsJustMyOpinion · 07/12/2010 12:25

Im sure that your 13yo can look after your toddler. If not do you have anyone who can walk your dog for you or a neighbour who can pop in and look after your toddler. I have a toddler and a dog, but luckily my mil is close by and loves the dog as much as dd and treats him like a furry grandson, so she likes to walk him if/when I can't.

Or ask your dh to take him out for another half hour when he gets home.

DiscoDaisy · 07/12/2010 12:26

Couldn't your 13yo take the dog for a walk?

Dexterrocks · 07/12/2010 12:29

I would stay with your toddler. If your dcs temperature spiked or they had a convulsion or something it would be a terrible situation for your teenager.

Try to amuse the dog by putting cheese or similar in a kong or toilet roll tube, throwing things for it to fetch etc.
I know it is not ideal but you would never forgive yourself if something happened for the sake of a dog walk!

DiscoDaisy · 07/12/2010 12:32

Sorry just re read your post and noticed he's not comfortable taking the dog out.

MmeLindt · 07/12/2010 12:33

Well, it depends on what you mean by poorly toddler.

Poorly as in bad cold/cough/watching Cbeebies then I would go.

Obviously if toddler was really ill, or prone to convulsions, or had a very high fever then not - but then I presume you would not be considering it.

I would take the dog for a quick walk, maybe just 20 mins - 30 mins rather than 40 mins.

You have a phone with you, if your 13 yo is worried you could still be back within a short time.

jooseyfruit · 07/12/2010 12:35

lol at 'furry grandson', no one nearby to pop in unfortunatley.

I'll see what ds1 thinks, and also how ds2 is when oldest gets home from school.

OP posts:
jooseyfruit · 07/12/2010 12:38

he has a cough and a temp (temp coming down after calpol)is snuggling up on sofa glued to cbeebies.

although i would be out for 30-40 mins i wouldn't be more than 10 mins away (walking in a big circle around our street iyswim)

ShoppingDays · 07/12/2010 12:45

I reckon stay in as the dog has had a walk already.

hmc · 07/12/2010 12:45

It doesn't hurt a dog to miss a walk as a one off. I am a bit Hmm at the halo sporting dog owners on Mn (not necessarily on this thread) who claim to walk their dog every day without fail, come hell or high water. My dogs get walked on average 6 days out of 7 (off lead, for an hour) but there is the odd occasion when life gets in the way. All my dog owning friends in the dog owning mecca of the New Forest would admit the same.

newpup · 07/12/2010 12:49

Although I walk my lab for about an hour and a half every day without fail. She missed a walk last week. DD2 was home with a tummy bug and I could not leave her to walk the dog. I felt guilty all day but there was no way around it. As long as it is only on the exceptional occasion.

ANTagony · 07/12/2010 12:51

20 minutes back garden/ drive with a ball and/ or raggy. Thats what my active year old pup is getting in this bad weather. She does the running around I just stand and try to keep warm.

MmeLindt · 07/12/2010 12:53

hmc
I am a dog owner with a dog who won't actually go out in bad weather - she does not mind snow if it is not too deep but hates rain. So some days she does not get a walk, doesn't bother her but she can be a bit restless and yappy.

Depends on the dog.

EdgarAllenSnow · 07/12/2010 12:56

yes. i would leave them. does poorly toddler not nap? that would be ideal time.

hmc i find it very hard not walk my dogs, not because i have a halo, but because they annoy the crap out of me if i don't.(put on coat - 'is it walkies time'?, go into kitchen 'is it walkies time?' etc etc..)

jooseyfruit · 07/12/2010 13:01

yy Edgar that's exactly what Mr loopy lurcher does! i certainly don't have a halo
but he needs to be out.
we only have postage stamp sized back yard (currently a foot deep in hard compacted snow)so playing out is a no no too.

OP posts:
jooseyfruit · 07/12/2010 13:03

oh, and dogs recall is for shit so can't go off lead, so he needs a good long walk

OP posts:
SpringHeeledJack · 07/12/2010 17:11

MmeLindt

my dogs (staffs) love snow but loathe rain. They stick their noses out of the door, then just do a quick about turn back into the warm

...what did you do in the end, joosey?

jooseyfruit · 07/12/2010 17:36

I stayed in.
ds2 did a spectacular pink projectile vomit all over sofa

Mr Loopy lurcher has been bloody brilliant, almost like he understands what's going on.

will take him out for extra long walkies tomorrow morning.

OP posts:
SpringHeeledJack · 07/12/2010 17:48

oh noooooooo- poor you

Calpol sick

Sad
jooseyfruit · 07/12/2010 20:35

toddler still very poorly though

OP posts:
SpringHeeledJack · 07/12/2010 20:41

oh poor you

remember being indoors all day with conflicting demands from sicky child/bouncy puppy is no fun. I feel your pain

glad you both had a good run Smile and hope ds2 better in the morning!
