Can you explain Colours?

I went to a large state sixth form.
GCSEs AABBCCCD
A levels BCD
Went to an ex poly university 2:2

I feel grateful and guilty to my parents who sacrificed a great deal, particularly my mum. I felt guilty that I didn’t have a good experience because of the sacrifices she made.

I do feel like I achieved my academic potential at my private school and perhaps that wouldn’t have happened at a state school. Unfortunately my wellbeing / mental health suffered a great deal.

Thank you for answering.

I'm sorry to hear it wasn't all positive. I feel a similar way but I was on assisted place so government funded, but went to a private school for years 7-9. It was a mixed experience. Educationally good but emotionally not so much.

Hope you're happy in life now x

How much do you earn now?

I think private schools means high earner. I went to a public school and public uni in another country, did my masters in London and I am on £130k which obviously it’s not highest but it’s decent consider I had 3 kids in between. I m choosing to send my kids in public schools and save the money for their uni/ first home.

Do you mean public school or state school? They aren't the same thing in the UK.

Savonne · 30/03/2026 03:53

I'm really surprised that this is seen as a unique enough to suggest an AMA

Savonne · 30/03/2026 03:54

Conundrummum123 · 28/03/2026 16:13

This is an odd ama. I too went to private school and it’s not that unique.

would NOT recommend

they are entities beholden to themselves and like all businesses they care about one thing. The bottom line. There is a reason we have regulators and that’s businesses cannot conduct themselves in an ethical manner

Apologies I meant state schools.

My daughter’s went to private school up to the age of 16 then they went to a state 6th form college. It was obviously a parental choice to educate them privately and I do not regret it at all. However I was not prepared for the backlash that DD’s would experience now they are in the workplace. It seems that there are people who like to hold it against them. I don’t remember ever being interested in where any of my friends or colleagues went to school. Why are these people so hung up on it? Have you experienced any prejudice against your education?

GeniusofShakespeare · 31/03/2026 12:24

Why does anyone know where they went to school? I've literally never heard anyone discuss this in the workplace, any age group.

Why on earth does going to private school warrant an AMA? What extra worldly knowledge could you possibly bestow upon us?

I went to private school and there was one woman I worked with (actually she was my manager for a while) who made a lot of snide comments about it. It surprised me because I don't behave arrogantly, have inherited no money nor been given any, nor do I probably even come across as privately educated, and I have a number of serious ACEs (adverse childhood experiences) which cancelled out any advantage my school education might have given me.

As far as I am concerned, having a loving, supportive family behind you counts far more in terms of your future happiness and success than anything else.

redskyAtNigh · 31/03/2026 13:02

If you have children (or intend to have children) will you send them to private school?

Sometimes they don’t ask, they assume and I think it’s because of their accent. Sometimes they will pointedly ask. Neither DD is snobby or pretentious in any way they are creative, unassuming people. Neither are they rich and there is certainly no money in the family especially since I got divorced. My husband and I both had jobs in sales.

cadburyegg · 31/03/2026 20:39

Not answering the daft questions.

I can empathise with her, I often get asked where I went to school because I stayed in the city I grew up in. As soon as I tell them the name of the school I get a surprised look. I try and dodge the question because people have all sorts of opinions about it. The worst is when people think my parents wasted their money because I didn’t come out of it with a suite of A*s and I’m not a doctor or academic.

I have two and it’s out of the question financially.

The thing is though what your parents spent their money on is absolutely none of their business. Also it’s not something you had any say in. I find it incredible they have the nerve to comment on your exam results!! Bloody cheek.
