Why didn’t you continue to sixth form?

Scripturient · 28/03/2026 13:43

Please could you find a way of pointing out that the delusion of so many Mners, that private school inevitably turns out ‘polished’, ultra-confident, sporty, articulate all-rounders with excellent manners, a plethora of A*s, grade 8 in flute and viola, and an indelible work ethic is just that — a delusion?

ProudAmberTurtle · 28/03/2026 15:54

How much do you earn now?

CurlewKate · 28/03/2026 15:59

Can someone start a thread dispelling the myth that everyone who goes to their nearest state school is not a a hooligan/on drugs/on benefits/has no qualifications….

cestlavielife · 28/03/2026 16:02

My dd went to state comprehensive and is now a doctor .
What is your job now?
Did you tell your parents you were not havimg a good experience?

Conundrummum123 · 28/03/2026 16:13

This is an odd ama. I too went to private school and it’s not that unique.

would NOT recommend

they are entities beholden to themselves and like all businesses they care about one thing. The bottom line. There is a reason we have regulators and that’s businesses cannot conduct themselves in an ethical manner

BillieWiper · 28/03/2026 16:21

Where did you go at 16?

What GCSEs, A-Levels and degree grades did you get?

Do you feel grateful that you were given that privilege, or were there any regrets or unpleasant feelings about it?

Thank you.

CitizenZ · 28/03/2026 16:25

Did you skip the English lessons at your private school?

MyNameIsTina · 28/03/2026 16:26

Ask me anything and I won't answer...

PinkFrogss · 28/03/2026 16:43

What is your opinion on VAT being added to school fees?

Do you think going to private school gave you an advantage in life, and if so do you think this was an unfair advantage?

MrsMoastyToasty · 28/03/2026 16:44

I went to private school (in fact I went to the oldest girls private school) and stayed until I was 18.

You cannot seriously think you’re the first person to share information on fee paying school experience here?

Did I say I was?

I mean there’s plenty of non unique AMAs.

I went to a large state sixth form.
GCSEs AABBCCCD
A levels BCD
Went to an ex poly university 2:2

I feel grateful and guilty to my parents who sacrificed a great deal, particularly my mum. I felt guilty that I didn’t have a good experience because of the sacrifices she made.

I do feel like I achieved my academic potential at my private school and perhaps that wouldn’t have happened at a state school. Unfortunately my wellbeing / mental health suffered a great deal.

I’m on the fence about VAT. I’m surprised that it’s taken this long for it to be added. I think they should have added it for new students only. It seems wrong that they can just add 20% to the bill for families whose children are already enrolled.

Yes I think it gave me a slight advantage. Is it unfair, hmm. Good question. I am not particularly academic. A couple of my friends went into competitive fields, I’d say it gave them an advantage yes.

haha.

Out of all my friends I’m in touch with… Some of us are polished, not all of us. That may be to do with parents/upbringing rather than school. Ultra confident, that is not something I have noticed. None of us are sporty. Yes, many of us are articulate. A couple of others did well in their music grades. Lots of A*s but also a lot of average grades. I’d say most - not all - of us have a good work ethic.

I changed schools at 11. After that, well. My parents were of the opinion that there were bullies in every school. My dad would not have considered state schools, tbf our catchment ones were awful back then. Years 9-11 were probably the worst years, and those are probably not good years to change school either.
