Over the last few years I've got air conditioning installed in my modest detached house. We use it for heating aswell as cooling. AMA

How much did it cost?

Difficultdecisionsonontuesday · 28/02/2025 13:39

Do you have a unit in every room and what made you decide to do this?

itschillyinhere · 28/02/2025 20:05

SmugglersHaunt · 28/02/2025 13:38

How much did it cost?

Would cost £7k+ for a whole house system with 6 or so internal units and 2 outdoor units. Got bedrooms done first at a cost of £1.5k per room

Yes wall unit in each of 4 bedrooms and 2 downstairs. After sweltering summer of 2022 we got the bedrooms done. Kids and us sleep wonderfully throughout the summer because of them. Would cost £1.5k if you wanted 1 bedroom done. Cheaper if multiple done at the same time as you'd have one outdoor unit that serves multiple bedrooms

Is it noisy outside?

Is it noisy outside?

It's louder in heating mode in winter but no louder than a boiler flue. In summer just ticking over It's very quiet

What's your favourite biscuit ?

KatieRobin · 28/02/2025 21:09

How do you find it compares in terms of running costs to a regular heating system?

Air Source heat pumps deliver 4+ units of heat for 1 unit of electricity so 400% efficiency compared to a gas boiler which is only 80ish % efficient. Ironically electricity costs 4 times more than gas so costs slightly less tban gas if you don't have a smart tariff and batteries etc. If you did have those things it could be 3 times cheaper than a comparable gas central heating system

Who do you contact in event of breakdown and how do the costs compare to a standard gas engineer? I work for a contractor and raise repair jobs for engineers. We seem to have an absolute nightmare tracking down air source heat engineers, although I'm sure more will become available over time.

Walkden · 01/03/2025 05:34

Where are the units positioned on the property? Are they walk mounted or on a patio? How far from the property boundary/ neighbours?

Sesame2011 · 01/03/2025 05:45

FjordPrefect · 01/03/2025 05:57

How much is your electricity bill each month? And how many square metres is your house?

pickywatermelon · 01/03/2025 06:06

How often do you get it serviced in the Uk?

I am in a warm country so it’s every quarter as it gets quite a bit of daily use but was curious for UK

Because it's air to air air source heat pump rather than air to water (what you'll read about in the news as that is what the government subsidise at the minute) servicing is far easier. Any air con engineer can do it. Unsure on costs as nothing has gone wrong yet but they do have 10 years manufacturer warranties covering indoor and outdoor units so not much to worry about

Down side access near wheelie bins. Over 1 metre from boundary so about 2.5 metres from neighbours building

That's good. Yes it sounds like you have invested in a higher end product. I deal with social housing tenants so they don't deal with their own repairs. It appears that this "upgrade" has been imposed upon them without the supporting infrastructure behind it.

Where do you live?

Sunny Midlands. People often say "you only need them 2 weeks a year) but ours are in use in bedrooms from about May until September. Cost about 10 pence per day to run overnight

Do you use it for heating? We love ours in the summer but during winter if we use it for heating the air becomes so dry and uncomfortable.

Costs about £60 a month for heating in the winter for whole house at price cap rate. £10-15 for cooling in summer. Bedroom units cost about 10 pence per night for cooling in the summer

Yes for heating in winter. Haven't experienced that, which brand do you have?
