No doubt I'd get a load of shade about 'bragging' but that's not the intention. If anyone is interested in asking any questions about travelling regularly with a little own, feel free to ask.

I often travel just the two of us as his Dad can't get as much time off work as I do.

OP posts:

Following on from that, you do realize that your 3 year old will be the generation that is going to suffer massively due to the climate crisis don't you?

Do you know anything about what offsetting is? Do you know what the emissions are for the OPs flights? Do you know what her carbon footprint is otherwise?
No?
Are you just virtue signalling and trying to shame someone enjoying life with their child?

Word of advice, if you actually care about the environment, how about you stop using Google and Apple since their mega cloud computing is one of the biggest emissions causes worldwide. That's right, that means put down your phone.

Notimeforaname · 14/09/2024 13:03

Comments like this makes me laugh. I get 6 weeks standard annual leave and can buy one additional week. Hence different figures. I also have access to parental leave (18 weeks unpaid until child's 18th birthday)

6 weeks standard holidays is the dream! I get 4 and always take 2 or 3 unpaid weeks throughout the year.

I came back to this thread this morning OP, to discover we, and anyone who travels often, are racist!! Oh how I laughed.

I'm delighted for your trips. Very exciting.

JennyBeanR · 14/09/2024 13:05

Lots of jealousy in this thread.

OP, well done on living your best life. I'm sure your son is going to grow up empathetic, thoughtful and happy due to all of the quality time and wonderful experiences you are offering him.

I've started traveling on my own with my DD this year. Slightly different as she's 5 and severely learning disabled, but the idea is the same. Create lovely memories for us and see as much of the world as I can, while I can.

Unbelievable, you seriously think I need to know any more detail about the OP flying to 32 different destinations to be able to safely say it's dire for the environment? Offsetting? What a load of tosh, it's just justifying living a totally unsustainable selfish lifestyle with no thought for future generations.

Yes me using my phone to type this isn't without fault but you cannot seriously liken me tapping a few lines on mnet to flying around like there's no tomorrow? People are just completely deluded.

With respect, have you checked your facts here? Or are just trying to justify your own travel habits? This is the kind of thing that gets trotted out by people that know what they should be doing but don’t want to change. Apologies if this is not the case for you.

I’m not jealous. I love travel and am gutted it is no longer ethically or morally right. But when I think of doing what the OP is doing I just imagine myself feeling depressed by what humans are doing. I’m not jealous. I’m depressed about it though.

Oh, so you don't understand what carbon offsetting is, and you haven't thought about how much you use Google. Why am I not surprised. 🤷 Another online keyboard warrior trying to tear people down.

Have you investigated carbon offsetting? Someone had linked to an article above that details why it doesn’t actually help.

Fair enough. Those are your morals though. You don't know everything the OP does though. You don't know what her travels have contributed to the local communities, what her offsetting has been, or even the exact emissions of her flights. This isn't something to be depressed about.

If you want to travel, maybe learn how to do it in a way that suits your morals. Life is too short to suffer depression. I am really being sincere here. I wish you well x

Which 99% of the world can afford to travel to 22 countries with a toddler?

Surely you realise in your own statistics you are the 1%?

I wasn't talking about 99% of the world travelling, I was responding to the comments that called OP a bad parent. Life jackets, watching a child every second of their swimming, bugs, vaccines etc are a worry of the 1%. When I started travelling I realised how dumb some of my baby contraptions were. Babies are more resilient than we think

I’m not depressed that I can’t travel
as much as I’d like. It is immoral. The facts are clear about the impact. I’m really sorry, but once you know the facts, it’s as immoral as drink driving, if not more so.

I am saying I would be depressed if did lots of flying or cruises because I’d know I was causing grave harm. That’s why I don’t feel jealous - because I would no longer be able to enjoy it like I used to. I am depressed that people are ill informed and in such deep denial about the fact that we are facing extinction.

I do travel - just in a much lower carbon way than flying and cruises.

People can have accessed exactly the same information as you and come to a different conclusion.

You may have chosen to change your lifestyle in this way, but cutting down on the amount I travel isn’t a sacrifice I’m willing to make in my life. You are of course very welcome to consider that as immoral and as unconscionable as you wish to.

I’m not jealous either. I love my DC dearly but them aged 0-3 would not be my ideal travelling companion. “Eating amazing food” with a toddler in tow …? I think not. If OP wants to “do” every country in the world for 3 days apiece that’s her prerogative. But it’s not everyone’s dream 🤷‍♀️

RedToothBrush · 14/09/2024 16:02

When we took DS on holiday as a toddler getting him to eat anything at all was a challenge.

Mind you we had the same problem at home!

ZoeCM · 14/09/2024 16:07

You don't know what her travels have contributed to the local communities, what her offsetting has been, or even the exact emissions of her flights.

The chances of Instagram-travels contributing enough to the local community to cancel out the damage caused by the journey are virtually nil.

Offsetting is just a marketing scam. Here's a good article about it (apologies if this has already been posted, I haven't read the full thread).

No, we don't know the exact number of emissions caused by the OP's flights and cruises - but it's certainly not going to be low, is it?

We're living in a golden age of greenwash

From 'carbon neutral' flights to 'net zero' bacon, dishonest green PR is on the rise.

Yes, all that travel with a young child sounds like a nightmare to me! Holidays would quickly start to feel like a chore rather than fun.

im sorry but going on holiday by plane is NOT anything like drink driving. You are so unbelievably wrong about this

GoingDownLikeBHS · 14/09/2024 17:15

Could we make this quicker by having a large group topic entitled "News from the Arseoisie" or "Considerably Richer than You'm" where everyone who is comfortably off and living their bestest lives posts just their user name and says "hey I'm Lucky/better/cleverer/work harder because I've got A, B and C" and so on - just like a short summary so we really get a taste of how fabulous they are. I don't know if we should allow follow ups with details of their Instagram haul but MNHQ would pin a directive no doubt.

And then everyone who feels that they must admire such greatness congratulates them (like OP wants here).

And at the same time, anyone who says hang on a minute, and doubts the value of such boasting, is moved into the "I'm just a jealous meanie" group and banned from looking at the rich people lest they be smote blind etc.

It would just save so much hassle - although of course not allow for extensive boasting and the subsequent justification/DailyFail sad face/wobbly bottom lip.

Just saying.

Or maybe there should be a support forum for those that are triggered by wealthy people and can’t stop themselves clicking on and engaging with threads they dislike.

Mumsnet isn’t, and never has been, a site for the exclusive use of those in financial difficulty, or even for those in average financial circumstances.

I'm not sure people are triggered by the wealth, so much as the wanton disregard for the planet. It is allowed not to give a shit, but just own it.
It's "ask me anything". Not "kiss my arse please".

RedToothBrush · 14/09/2024 18:01

I don't think I'm triggered by wealth. I just have a lack of patience for tone deaf 'look at me, I'm so wonderful for showing off and declaring my parenting to be somehow amazing cos I can afford to do things others might not'.

We travelled a lot when DS was a toddler. I don't have jealousy.

I just don't think it gives bragging rights as a parent. There's a certain amount of ego going on there which isn't particularly nice.

Just go and travel if you want. Don't use it as a way to be an evangelist about how your lifestyle is superior and others aren't open minded and cultured enough. Cos really it's not. Especially when you are admitting that your cultural experience is based partly on fucking cruise ship hop on hop offs!
