I’m an ‘overworker’ and have 3 FT jobs - AMA

SallyGs · 05/04/2024 12:39

Ive had a few people now mention on the careers topic to do an AMA so am taking the plunge.

An overworker is someone who holds multiple full time roles at the same time. Started in the US and became big during COVID - for obvious reasons as it’s pretty much impossible to do with non remote work.

I currently have 3 full time jobs, at my peak I had 5 during 2020. And am working towards buying a rental property with my additional income.

So for anyone who has wondered about it or are interested in trying it themselves - AMA

Who said no references? I have references, my current role however I give an excuse for my secondaries. Not having any would be odd

You just don’t get it. And that’s fine but stop embarrassing yourself

I'm not embarrassed, thanks. Just going on what you claimed.
So if that's wrong....

SallyGs · 05/04/2024 16:42

Do you think only lawyers understand the basics of the law?

This is my point. It’s not a basic question. Civil fraud is quite complicated.

TimeandMotion · 05/04/2024 17:22

SallyGs · 05/04/2024 16:42

At this point I’m giving up, you clearly have very little experience in larger businesses. Where HR are often a bit more of a policing force than a common sense dept.

Your ignorance is making this a bit pointless

enjoy the rest of your day

You’re right I only have 25 years in City law acting for FTSE 100 companies. No experience of larger businesses at all. My sincere apologies for my ignorance.

Definitelylivedin · 05/04/2024 17:22

And this is exactly why companies are asking people to go back to the office.

What will you do then OP?

ShadowyAlpaca · 05/04/2024 17:52

Haven't RTFT but think it's a great idea and can't see what people are moaning about. You're meeting objectives so your employers are happy, it's a win/win situation.

When I worked at the Civil Service I'd do the work (to their satisfaction) in an hour a day. Then I'd have to sit there going out of my mind with boredom until I'd done the required 7 hour day. I couldn't even read a book as the manager didn't like it, there was no internet and no other work to do.

If this is the new way of working I'm sorry I was born too late to miss it, good luck to you OP.

SuziQuinto · 05/04/2024 17:55

It's interesting, @ShadowyAlpaca that you did similar in the Civil Service. Could they not find more work for you, or is it just a case of general underemployment?

Fizbosshoes · 05/04/2024 17:58

Sorry if I missed but do you look after your toddler at the same time?

I get that some jobs probably can be done efficiently more or just "as needed" and that in offices and at home most people aren't actively engaged in work all day.....but 1 hr/day or 5 hours a week....?for a ft job...?surely that is checkable or noticeable. Some people will work quicker than others but it seems pretty strange to me that work that might be expected to take majority of a week, could be finished in less than a day?

ShadowyAlpaca · 05/04/2024 18:00

@SuziQuinto It seems to be the culture in the Civil Service, plenty of people had been there 20 years+ and were happy working that way. There was never enough work but nobody ever got sacked. I left before I died from boredom. Easy money for some.

It’s really not, there are clear parameters for genuine fraud in employment law itself. This does not fit the requirements. So again, just give up

Thankfully I don’t have that issue since my roles are remote first as per my contract.

she goes to nursery Tues - Thurs but I usually pick her up early as I miss her Grin

Mum has her on Fridays but I had some time free so did a contact nap for her today as a treat

My DH works for the NHS and says the same. The level of slacking is extreme and people aren’t meeting their goals but HR doesn’t seem to care (he is going out of his mind trying to get his team into shape and having no support)

Ha ha I have a feeling this is all pseudo legal bullshit you have picked up from the overemployment subreddit where you hang out and jerk off with your fellow scam artists.

Not "weird". You said no references, I didn't realise that you had references for one job.
What's weird is that the other jobs didn't want references, but if you say so, that must happen in marketing.

That's very enlightening. I know a CS who actually puts in a lot of hours but I think he has a responsible role.

Nope, please show where I said I have no references.

I was asked what I did about references for my current role, when getting the secondaries. I never said I have no references

So again, if you aren’t able to read properly maybe it’s time to get to bed

Well it's certainly time to stop reading your ever charming comments, so I'll bid you farewell and good luck with all your jobs! 😂

Fallenangelofthenorth · 05/04/2024 18:43

I wouldn't do this myself as it would be far too stressful and would send my anxiety through the roof!

I am quite impressed though. I can see how if you're efficient it would be possible to pull it off. And I do agree with some of your comments, especially why the hell would you ask for more work? That made me laugh.

When you lost 2 of the 5 jobs, what happened? Did you literally just stop doing anything at all? Did they ever realise you weren't doing anything? Or did they just think you were crap?

Yes I slowly just stopped doing anything, at first they just thought I was a bit crap, then it just dwindled from there. Meant I got 6 months pay for 2 months worth of an hour a day work - so I didn’t mind too much. One was a start up so the salary was pretty good, so I made a decent chunk from that with no effort

Wow you scammed a start up? Obviously you know the blood, sweat and tears that entrepreneurs go through to establish a business and secure funding…. and you didn’t give a shit!

I’m questioning whether you are real as I can’t believe people with such a lack of moral compass exist. Usually these personality traits are reserved for Psychopaths.

I think doing this to a start up was awful. I was pretty impressed up until now but you literally took advantage of people who were putting everything on the line financially….

RickyGervaislovesdogs · 05/04/2024 19:25

I’m quite surprised none of your employers have caught on. I mean our local authority is shite, but they caught people out easily. All you need is a Nino and an inquisitive fraud investigator.

It’s not illegal but definitely unethical, the onus is on the employer to vet you properly. If they do and you aren’t meant to have secondary employment then you’re in breach of contract.

“especially why the hell would you ask for more work?” 🙄 Says it all.

bryceQ · 05/04/2024 19:26

Have you talked anywhere about what you actually do? Aside from pretending to be on teams.
