If you live in a city apartment do you have a country "hut"? As a city dweller I've always envied countries with a dacha culture.

ditalini · 09/06/2023 19:10

Oh, and also do you have shared laundry facilities? Again something that I think is a good idea for apartment living with limited space.

TheCyclingGorilla · 09/06/2023 19:17

Is the education system really as good as the internet tells me?

Why do you want to live in England?

FrenchBean7 · 09/06/2023 19:20

We are coming in August (to Copenhagen) - any recommendations for a reasonably priced place to eat. What specialities should we try? Apart from Danish pastries obviously 😜

SallyWD · 09/06/2023 19:24

I've heard Copenhagen is the happiest city in the world! Do you agree and why do think it is?

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 09/06/2023 19:34

If you lost your job would dagpenge cover your rent?

We've just come back from Copenhagen and absolutely loved it! But everything seems so expensive, would you mind sharing what you and your husband do for a living and what you earn? I'm curious as to Danish/UK salary equivalents!

Glad to hear you enjoyed your stay! It really is expensive - and prices has gone even more up lately. My husband works in the public sector, and I am employed by a NGO. We are not rich by any means but have everything we need. We earn around 140,000 £ a year in total and pay around 40 % of that in taxes.

Have you been to the Nimb hotel?

No - unfortunately not!

What could we do for a week at start of August? How is the weather then? I'd be with a 13 year old. Single parent.

Weather in August is usually fine - I'd say normally 20-25 degrees. Right now there's a heatwave though, and I hear it is supposed to last all summer!

Schools starts around August 10th, so there might be quite a few tourists. I would explore the different neighborhoods - especially Nørrebro which is my favourite part of the city. Take a walk at Assistens Cemetery, around the lakes and go for nice coffee and hip boutiques in Jægersborggade. Bring your swimming gear and go for a swim in one of the many spots in the harbour where you are allowed to swim.

Oh, and there is also Tivoli of course, the museums and you could also take a trip out of the city, for instance to the lovely open air museum in Lyngby.

Is it expensive? Would you recommend it for a holiday?

Yes to both Smile

I tried very hard to understand the game with the wooden blocks that everyone plays in the parks. I watched and watched...but still I didn't understand. Do you understand it?

tothesea · 09/06/2023 20:01

Is there a rule in Copenhagen around Air BnB’s? I have been looking for one for a visit to Copenhagen and they all seem to be family homes, with all their clothes in wardrobes, kids toys lying about etc.

Is Denmark really the model of societal perfection that it's touted to be?

In some ways I believe it is - our welfare system is generally good and quality of life is high. I happily pay my tax to have free healthcare, education etc. But of course there are issues - quality in the public health system decreasing, narrowmindedness, hostility towards other (non-western) cultures etc.

Tivoli at night, or during day?

Both Wink

We did Tivoli New Years Eve a few years ago. It absolutely lashed it down.
Amazing lights though.

How often have you visited The Little Mermaid? ☺️

I have been a few times, mostly with friends visiting from abroad who insisted on going Wink

Best places for 18 year olds to go who have one day in Copenhagen?

That's tricky - I don't know a lot about 18 year olds :-)

Nørrebro, Christianshavn, a harbour cruise - maybe just hanging out at the harbour and go for a swim. Street food at Reffen. A beer or two in Kongens Have!

Do you still have that beautifully moving statue of a drowning mother and her children (I think) under water (near a bridge)?

I lived in Copenhagen for a year back in the 90’s and loved it! I really should go back.

Do you still have Netto Bikes?!

What do the Danish think of Christiania? Quietly tolerated or they'd rather see it gone?

Mixed feelings, really, I think. It really has drug problems but also creativity and joy of life. Don't really like it myself but like that there is room for alternative living in the middle of the city.

We live in an apartment and really wish we had a cottage in the countryside! Too expensive, though. Quite a few people in our neighborhood has a place outside the city, especially families with kids.

We do have shared laundry facilities, but quite a few families in our building also have their own washing machine. We didn't for the first few years and managed fine with the shared facilities - even when the kids were small. It is 4 huge machines and 2 big dryers in the cellar - and a booking system.

@DaneMum We have been back in UK for a year after 20 months in Copenhagen. Had a villa in Amager. I miss it- !! I've often given tips on here about it- my biggies are that it's really in my opinion eating out and drinking out that are expensive but there are other good more affordable options - Reffen, Broens (both of these great for teens as well as adults) Tivoli food hall,

I especially miss Bakken - what a gorgeous place and that coastal run (we had a leased car) From Helsingborg down to Copenhagen !! And I really miss Dragor on a lovely
Sunny day

I think a lot of people don't realise it has white sandy beaches too along the coast both North and south of Copenhagen

catsnhats11 · 09/06/2023 20:24

Not the OP but I loved it at dusk/night, lit up it just looked prettier and there's a "Laser show" over the lake which I assume is every night.

Why do you want to live in England?

I think it is fairly good, yes - but I don't have a lot to compare it to to be honest.

My parents were English teachers and I think especially my mum instilled a love of all things British in me. London was my first holiday abroad :-) I still love the vibrant city and the layers of history everywhere. I am a sucker for Call the Midwife and the Ruth Galloway series :-) I also love York and would love to se more of the country - Cornwall, Cotswolds, Norfolk etc. And I guess I just feel "connected" to England in some ways and would like to try having an everyday life there some day.
