These are my pet jumping spiders.

Freya is beautiful.

I think I could get a velvet spider or a ladybug spider but wouldn't get anything bigger.

It's weird how looking at your photos @SpidaMama doesn't set off that shivery feeling and fear I normally get. I wonder if it's the cute, almost baby looking eyes. Aren't we programmed to be endeared by overly large eyes so we don't harm babies?!

My friend lives in Hertfordshire and they have Hertfordshire Hunter spiders. Now they are the stuff of my nightmares!!

I think you're right.
Possibly a combination of the fact 2 of their eyes are much bigger and more noticeable so they look more 'puppyish' than most spiders with a million small eyes.

They're very fluffy too which I think helps and the light colours. I found the peachy light jumpers much easier to look at than the black ones when I first started researching.

Because in my opinion, velvety looking spiders are nowhere near as horrifying as sharp legged, armour plated house spiders. Even the way they sit is terrifying, but the velvety spiders sit...softer, if you know what I mean

Jumpers are about £18 to £30 depending on the type, from breeders. From a petshop £30+

Enclosure can be anything from free to £40ish. At first they can live in a small smoothie cup then a larger smoothie cup. And you can get basic encloseres for about 20 quid. Or make your own!

The link is working for me. I had a good look at the website but I did get a bit of a reaction when looking at the dark coloured spiders so I think beginners definitely should start with the light coloured ones like the OP said.

How in the world has a thread made me go from hatred of spiders (although I never kill them!) to playing with the possibility in my mind of having a Lydia?!

I even saw a black ugly spider in the bathroom in the night and didn't react half as badly as I usually do 😂

If you get an L5/L6 they are TINY at that age.

And you really don't have to handle them. They're fine without human interaction. Many people enjoy just watching them.

I actually got mine as an L3 and I was shocked at how small he was. Sooooooo tiny. The breeder has since said she won’t sell them that small anymore and only at L5 which is fair enough
