Good Morning
I have just accepted a job as a ssw in a specialised department in one of the secondary schools on the IOM. I have 2 children 1 age 7 and one in secondary school about to go into Yr 11. My eldest will be doing his gcses in May and we are looking to relocate to IOM in Jan. Is there a possibility he could go back a year into Yr 10 when we move across as this way it would give him a chance to settle before then doing gcses on the island. He has a reader and scribe for his exams over here as he is dyslexic.
Tia for any advice xx

This is absolutely something you should be addressing to the school, your employer! Now.
Before term starts

I don’t suppose the Op realised that if you start a AMA, you are expected to dedicate yourself to it until not a single question is outstanding!

I believe that is the actual law.

To some mumsnetters, and it would seem your one, mumsnet is so important Thame that they truly believe it should be! 😂

That

There must be something kicking off on the IoM that is keeping @jayiom very busy...

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 21/08/2022 03:56

Isn't Jeg the Peg from the Isle of Man?

blueblueelectricblue28 · 21/08/2022 04:02

@BurnDownTheDiscoHangTheDJ I think you might be thinking of Jersey/Guernsey - the IOM was never occupied though the Channel Islands were.

MrsMarkRonson · 23/02/2023 11:10

I was reading about the Summerland fire in the early '70s. Do you remember it happening? do people still talk about it now?

newtb · 23/02/2023 11:57

One of my GM was born in Douglas in 1884, but only because her DF, a cabinet maker went there for work.

IOMQuestions · 23/02/2023 12:22

@MrsMarkRonson I moved here 25 years ago and Summerland was still partially standing, used to swim there...it's been pulled down now.

People remember it but it's rarely talked about, left a really deep scar I think. There's a memorial now but it's recent and I think there was some ill feeling about how long that took to happen, like it had been brushed under the carpet.

I know people who were there that night, or should have been there and weren't or who remember seeing the smoke.

HomeSweetLove · 23/02/2023 13:34

I used to live there and have lots of family still there. It’s quite funny reading some peoples impressions of it.

Theres definitely a lot of narrow mindedness and many have that small town/island mentality which is unpleasant. I also think there’s a bit of snobbery over there, many don’t think much of those who have dared to leave ‘the island’.

A couple of my cousins have moved over here to England but lots of them say they’d never leave. They can’t cope with driving over here for a start. 😅

I don’t think I’d want to go back to live there but I enjoy a few days or a week there a couple of times a year. I sometimes go over for the TT, one of my relatives has a house on the TT course and some of my relatives/friends are TT marshals and live for it. It’s good fun and has a nice vibe when it’s on.

IOMQuestions · 23/02/2023 15:52

I know, when I say I live there you get some really odd reactions. A lot of people have no idea at all where it is, or think it's really flat, or think it's a one ferry a week kind of place.

The countryside is probably the best bit, I love the fact I can finish work at 5.30 and be up a hill or on a beach by about 5.45.

Not a fan of the TT though, live just off the course and hate the sound of ambulances or the air ambulance over head when the course goes quiet.

Do you say hello to the fairies?

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 24/02/2023 08:35

Have they stopping singing 'Jeg the Peg' at the beginning of Committees of Tynwald sessions now that Rolf Harris is persona non grata?

MrsMarkRonson · 25/02/2023 12:47

@IOMQuestions Thanks for that - gosh it sounds like the original building was badly designed. Such a shame.

mrsredhat · 25/02/2023 13:07

My dad did his military training in Jurby just before I was born, I had to go there just to see what it was like. I loved it and have been back a few times on holiday. A short flight from where I live. I'm very jealous OP!

if you are still here.... do you ever see basking sharks?
