Do you all have three legs?

isitaline97 · 14/08/2022 11:06

I've always been intrigued about the Isle of Man, I didn't know I needed this thread on a Sunday morning 😂 what kind of accent do you have over there?

Ylfa · 14/08/2022 11:07

Thanks for your help, talking of three legs your flag looks almost identical to the Sicilian flag! Is this just an island thing?

Also, have you or any of your Manx friends and family taken DNA tests? If so is it quite Scottish and Irish?

OldTinHat · 14/08/2022 11:07

I'm finding this interesting OP because I live on the Isle of Wight which is quite a bit smaller than you!

Tr1skel1on · 14/08/2022 11:10

Hi OP from another local 😄

IOW is a bit different tho as it’s British and much closer to the mainland.

Timely post! We are thinking of holidaying there next year perhaps not a full week maybe 3-5 days, will be just DH and me, not in school holiday, probably late June or early July.
We'll come on the ferry (which route is best?) with the car. Where is best to stay and what must we see/do ?

Thelikelylass · 14/08/2022 11:17

Do you or anyone in your family remember the waxworks museum down I town? It was beyond weird but great! I loved the IOM it was a family holiday place. Rows of shops making rock and chopping it up, jars of sweet pebbles. The steep walk up Mount Havelock to the hotel. Kippers!
I loved it and I'm going to go back next year after many decades.

jayiom · 14/08/2022 11:21

@TwoLeftSocksWithHoles no but it'd be a good selling point!

@isitaline97 😂 it's hard, I don't hear us having an accent at all! But I went to the UK a few weeks ago and I was told on one occasion that the accent sounded Brummy and on another that it sounded Manc - also compared to Scouse a lot (but not as strong!). So some sort of mix of these I guess!

@Ylfa I don't know anyone who has done heritage tests personally. And no idea about the flag! (Sorry, lack of knowledge here Grin)

@Tr1skel1on hi!

@Ariela Liverpool route to the island I always find best as its quickest, Heysham route takes longer!

I'd say stay out of town if you have the car (west or south of the island are great!). Loads of little staycation places spotted around in countryside areas.
Great beaches (and can rent kayaks and paddle boards at the big one down south). Sunset in the west of the island if you stay there is amazing to see. Laxey Wheel is a good one to see.
Also, the steam trains, and the mountain railway that goes up Snaefell are good ones to look into.

jayiom · 14/08/2022 11:34

@Thelikelylass I don't remember that - I'm sure my mum does though!

I'm sure you can still get rock at places on island though and kippers are still a big thing! Grin there's a lot of little traditional places still.

Do you know Joe?
He's adorable and I'm so pleased his career is kicking off.

I don't know him but love LOVE the series

Papergirl1968 · 14/08/2022 11:46

The three leg symbol on the flag means something like "whichever way you throw me I will stand. "

Iamthewombat · 14/08/2022 11:49

Come on, OP! How have you missed out the folk tale of the buggane and St Trinian’s church?

Kangaruby · 14/08/2022 11:53

Do you think your children will leave for uni and not come back? I lived there about 25 years ago and found the feeling of isolation and been "trapped" quite claustrophobic.

jayiom · 14/08/2022 11:58

@DorsetRoots not personally but think everyone over here knows of him now and feels a sense of pride! It's not often that someone comes from our island and does so well in that aspect, especially at his age! He's great (as is the series).

@Iamthewombat honestly, I haven't even heard of these!!! 😂 does this make me lose my Manx status? 😂

@Kangaruby I have no idea but there's definitely a chance. The majority of my friends that went to university in the UK stayed there and said they wouldn't come back! There's just many more opportunities in the UK. The island is also prime place for families and older people in my opinion, but not so much a prime place for young people/young adults.

🤩 thanks for more Manx mythology, love it!

DorsetRoots · 14/08/2022 12:07

@jayiom - ahh, that's so lovely! One of his co- actors comes from very near to me - again, I don't know him personally, but he's from a local school so there's much local pride here also. And yes, the series is amazing! Can't wait for series 2 and 3.

I'd like to visit IOM - can you give me good photo spots?

Glitterbiscuits · 14/08/2022 12:09

Why is the TT race still allowed when most years someone dies???

Iamthewombat · 14/08/2022 12:11

Yeah sorry OP, your buggane ignorance means that you must renounce your Manxhood.

BurnDownTheDiscoHangTheDJ · 14/08/2022 12:20

Literally all I know about the IoM is to do with the Nazis invading. Is there any evidence there still of the invasion?

jayiom · 14/08/2022 12:24

@Glitterbiscuits this has been an ongoing debate for as long as it has been on - saw loads of it this year. People get shut down quick when it gets questioned and told that it is the racers choice knowing the risks, not anyone else's business essentially!!

OP posts:
Glitterbiscuits · 14/08/2022 12:26

@jayiom Im guessing it brings in a huge amount of money?

jayiom · 14/08/2022 12:27

@BurnDownTheDiscoHangTheDJ I'm actually not sure about physical evidence of the invasion. We have many commemorative pieces across the island and within museums for soldiers who died in WWII and many other local WWII artefacts still kept.
