Well, just that really. ☺️

Aren't you afraid of side-effects?
What do they ask you to do exactly? How do you report back to them?

JohnnyMcGrathSaysFuckOff · 23/05/2020 19:20

I tried to volunteer but they only let people from certain postcodes, sadly.

TFSRM · 23/05/2020 19:26

When did you have the vaccine? What follow up do you have to do with the researchers? Will you ever be told if you had the live vaccine or a placebo?

MrsRogerLima · 23/05/2020 19:27

@justonecottonpickingminute

There is the possibility of side effects but the patient information leaflet is really comprehensive and clear.

They tell you what they expect based on very similar vaccines already in widespread use.

Depending on the group I am in I will either have the covid vaccine or a control jab (meningitis vaccine) then be asked to complete a diary for 7 days, have a weekly survey sent to me and either monthly, bi monthly, quarterly or six monthly blood tests for 12 months.

@TFSRM

I am waiting on my appointment date.

No I will not be told which jab I am given

Are you worried about long term side effect they might not be aware of yet?

ScarlettDarling · 23/05/2020 19:32

Is this the Oxford vaccine that we've heard lots about, or a different one?

ChocolateTea · 23/05/2020 19:34

Are they planning on purposely exposing you to the virus at any point to see if the vaccine works? Are you going to be encouraged to still social distance, wear a mask etc, or do they want you to try and catch it?

SandysMam · 23/05/2020 19:36

Thank you for doing this, you are brave and I for one really appreciate it!

SunInTheSkyYouKnowHowIFeel · 23/05/2020 19:37

At what point will you be able to find out whether you had the Covid vaccine or the other one?

MrsRogerLima · 23/05/2020 19:41

@Theforest

There is always that possibility. However the risk is small according to the information I have been given. The way I see it is that if we want a vaccine it needs to be tested so someone needs to volunteer.

@ScarlettDarling yes the Oxford vaccine.

@Chocolatetea No there will be no purposeful exposure to the virus. Vaccines (all vaccines) are basically weakened virus so that your body can fight it off and produce antibodies which will stop you getting the virus. This is why they will test my blood regularly to see if 1. I develop antibodies and 2. How long they hang around in my system for to give an idea of how effective the vaccine will be.

Yes I will still socially distance. It's the responsible thing to do.

Also, if they later ask to deliberately infect you with corona to test the vaccine would you do it?

MrsRogerLima · 23/05/2020 19:43

@SandysMam - your thanks is appreciated but not needed ☺️ someone has to do it or we won't move forward out of this at all.

@SunInTheSkyYouKnowHowIFeel I won't ever be told. If the vaccine is successful I will need to be vaccinated again should it be rolled out to the whole of the general population. It might just be the vulnerable like the flu vaccine.

Chillipeanuts · 23/05/2020 19:44

No questions, just a big thank you.

Jokie · 23/05/2020 19:44

What made you want to volunteer?

ToothFairyNemesis · 23/05/2020 19:44

@MrsRogerLima I am shielding , just want to say thank you so much for doing this.

MrsRogerLima · 23/05/2020 19:46

@SunInTheSkyYouKnowHowIFeel I very very much doubt they will ask that, however I will make a judgement based on the facts they can present to me at the time if they do.

I would think they would need to be very confident that the vaccine had been successful to suggest it.

SunInTheSkyYouKnowHowIFeel · 23/05/2020 19:47

Oh thats interesting that you'll never be told, I kind of thought maybe at the end of the study you could find out or something. Interesting you'd then potentially be given the vaccine (again) along with the standard roll out if and when it happens.

Thank you for volunteering for this Flowers

SpeedofaSloth · 23/05/2020 19:49

Thank you for doing this.

MarshaBradyo · 23/05/2020 19:50

Do you go to work atm? If not do you think it’s likely you will be exposed to CV19? Or do any of your household regularly work or go to school etc

Muchtoomuchtodo · 23/05/2020 19:51

Have you had to check that it doesn’t invalidate your life insurance?

MrsRogerLima · 23/05/2020 19:52

@Jokie I want my children to continue to grow up in a world where they are free to hug their family and play with their friends without fear of the 'germs', I want my grandad (91) to be able to live the rest of his life free to do as he wishes and not alone in his house.

OP posts:
justonecottonpickingminute · 23/05/2020 19:55

@MrsRogerLima Thanks for your answers. I think you are courageous to volunteer.

MrsRogerLima · 23/05/2020 19:56

@MarshaBradyo I am WFH at the minute but DH still goes out to work (retail completing online fulfillment, no general public at the minute). Kids are home from school. I'd say my overall risk of contraction is low.
