This might be one great big tumbleweed lol! But I'm in bed with not much to do.

I had 45% hearing since early childhood.

Today I had the second of two operations and can now officially hear, probably better than most in fact, imagine that!

Have you noticed whether you're speaking more quietly or louder now?

Thisnamechanger · 06/05/2019 15:18

Urgh.... update. Feel very ill indeed. So dizzy and lightheaded.... everything so loud. Blergh!!

It's Otosclerosis. It's a common problem but in my case it comes in a bundle with a genetic bones disorder I suffer from

LIZS are you in the South? I got referred to the Royal ENT in North London...they're excellent.

Hey! I have otosclerosis too. I'm on the list to be seen about surgery. Did you get instant increase in hearing? I was told it could take weeks to notice a difference.

sausagepastapot · 06/05/2019 15:32

Did you learn sign language? If not why not?

If you did, did your parents/family learn too?

What school did you go to (eg a school with a hearing impairment unit or mainstream or other)?

Orchidflower1 · 06/05/2019 15:35

Fascinating thread op. Hope you’re feeling less wobbly soon.

Thisnamechanger · 06/05/2019 15:36

Did you get instant increase in hearing?

Yep. It's quite spooky actually. My surgery does them under local so when he takes the bone out you go totally deaf in that ear swiftly followed by perfect hearing terrifying then they put the dressing in and it muffles it. I'm on day four at my heartbeat is currently throbbing very loudly in my ear Shock

Did you learn sign language? If not why not?

I learned to lip read and get by...the hearing loss came on gradually in childhood (wasn't picked up in baby tests). While osteosclerosis is v.common the disease I have that causes it is rare and back when I was born there was no decent education about it. We were just told "you have it" - not "it also causes x,y,z". So my mum just thought I was an obnoxious kid who never listened!!

Will you be able to hear properly even in places in background noise such as loud restaurants?

No idea! I hope so. But at the moment I never want to leave the house again!

My grandpa had Otosclerosis they couldn’t do anything other than a huge box on a string round his neck to amplify. You are so, so lucky. Enjoy your new hearingFlowers

You are so, so lucky

I know, I'm just being a grump and feeling sorry for myself at the moment but I know it'll be worth it!

I think this is the op I had a few years back. I had a dissolvable dressing and once it fully dissolved it was like a wow moment - I remember a bus going past me and it was like the loudest thing ever.

Like you, I had one ear done first and the other one was done a while after.

Enjoy your new found bionic hearing OP.

My son is 1.5years old and has deafness on one side, did you find this affected you growing up?
Congratulations on the successful operation.

bingirl · 06/05/2019 21:40

@Thisnamechanger

I also remember having to close the windows at night because the birds singing in the morning sounded like they were actually sitting on my pillow. I'm not complaining though as it was the best feeling ever to be able to hear properly again and I am forever grateful for that.
