This might be one great big tumbleweed lol! But I'm in bed with not much to do.

I had 45% hearing since early childhood.

Today I had the second of two operations and can now officially hear, probably better than most in fact, imagine that!

Fab! What do you look forward to most?

Karwomannghia · 03/05/2019 18:31

What operation did you have?

TrumpsFerret · 03/05/2019 18:32

Saw the other thread - pleased for you OP. Did it used to sound like being underwater? I have a child who had issues and surgery to correct and that's how they described it!

Chocolateandcarbs · 03/05/2019 18:32

Wow that’s amazing! Wishing you a speedy recovery! What are you looking forward to hearing the most? When/why did you decide that getting the surgery was the right choice for you?

NCBabyBoy · 03/05/2019 18:32

Oh wow! That must be life-changing! I feel I should say congratulations, but I'm not sure if it's appropriate?

What caused your deafness? Did it noticeably impact your day-to-day life? What kind of operation did you have? How do you think your life will change now? Is there anything you'll miss about being deaf?

Xiaoxiong · 03/05/2019 18:32

Congratulations!! What sounds the most different between 45% and 100%? (Or are you at 110%!) are there certain sounds that are really different but other things sound the same, or is it like the whole world is turned up to 11?

RestingButchFace · 03/05/2019 18:32

Wow that is amazing. Does everything seem too loud now?

Thisnamechanger · 03/05/2019 18:33

Fab! What do you look forward to most?

Not feeling left out of conversations so much! Grin

Also I used to be quite a good Singer when young but as my hearing dropped away I lost all my pitch confidence...maybe I should try again!

Wow - OP, what type of hearing loss did you have? Dd2 is deaf & I've read about trials.

Thisnamechanger · 03/05/2019 18:34

*What operation did you have?

It's called a Stapedectomy but possibly not spelled like that. They replace one of the teeny bones in your ear with an implant.

Amazing OP congratulations!
Does everything seem terribly loud to you now? Is it disorientating?

Thisnamechanger · 03/05/2019 18:36

Did it used to sound like being underwater?

Actually the other way around!! I felt normal but I suppose my brain was used to it, now I feel like I have a load of water, or possibly jelly, in my ear, but that's probably the dressings.

This is super interesting actually. So I hated hearing aides because I felt they added volume but no clarity, if fact everything seems just loud and more confusing. The first Operation 3 years ago make everything LOUD but I don't know if it's something to do with them only doing one....the second one has added a tonne more volume but also a sort of richness?? The Uber in the way home from the hospital had rain pattering on the window ... Sounded even more gorgeous than usual. So did my house keys jangling. Cars, buses, coughing, crisps and my heartbeat all horrifically loud and awful. Eventually my brain will recalibrate and feel balanced (hopefully!).

Have you discovered any sounds that you find oddly distracting?

Thisnamechanger · 03/05/2019 18:42

Is there anything you'll miss about being deaf?

Yes actually Blush It's useful if someone is yammering on and you don't want to listen! Also if you're trying to sleep somewhere noisy having a "bad ear" is useful.

This is possibly bollocks but I'm quite socially reserved in groups of people. Whether the deafness caused that or I just used it as an excuse I'm not sure....but it's sort of become a part of my character...I guess that'll change now??

Wow! Excellent.

Cocolapew · 03/05/2019 18:47

Oh wow that's great!
Is there any sound that has grated or annoyed you since? (I know it's only been a day but loads of things annoy me daily Grin)

seven201 · 03/05/2019 18:52

Congratulations!!!!! I bet you're over the moon

Thisnamechanger · 03/05/2019 18:55

Is there any sound that has grated or annoyed you since?

I cannot stand mouth noises. When I came back to the ward I was thinking "gosh, this is something!" Then realised the woman in the next bed was open mouth eating her lunch...doooooooom!!

TipseyTorvey · 03/05/2019 18:55

What a lovely positive post, congratulations OP. My question is are ambient sounds really obvious now or can you automatically filter them out and is there any music you want to listen to that perhaps you couldn't properly hear before?

Thisnamechanger · 03/05/2019 19:14

It's mainly whatever the hearing equivalent of depth perception that has changed. People talking across the room sound like they're on a tannoy!

What did you have to do to get a referral for surgery? Am also partially deaf since childhood and have tinnitus now.

BambooB · 03/05/2019 19:37

What caused your hearing loss? X

Cocolapew · 03/05/2019 20:32

"Mouth noises", absolutely agree AngryGrin

Aroundtheworldandback · 05/05/2019 18:30

Hi op. What was the name of your condition? I know exactly how you feel having had cochlear implant surgery recently. In my case I had lost a lot more bearing than you and it has taken a long time for my brain to understand speech as fast as it used to before the hearing loss. I’m such a happier person now I can communicate and I think you’ll find life so much more enjoyable and less stressful.

Will you be able to hear properly even in places in background noise such as loud restaurants?
