Do all babies/toddlers who do 50+ hour weeks cope well with it?

Bamchic · 27/12/2018 06:44

Are you pissed of that you get paid way less than teachers.
I don’t mean to sound rude but I’m a teacher and I am so furious that nursery staff are seen as “less than teachers” your job is harder than mine and you deserve a fair wage.

MummySharkBabyShark · 27/12/2018 06:46

What is your favourite age to work with?

DrWhy · 27/12/2018 06:49

Would you send your own child to your nursery if you weren’t there?

femalepresentingnipples · 27/12/2018 07:53

What do you think is the best age for them settling in most easily?

nicea · 27/12/2018 08:06

@SnuggyBuggy not all babies cope with that, but most do settle into it eventually. Some are completely fine to begin with, some it takes a few weeks.

@Bamchic yes I do think about this sometimes but it's just the way it is! I'd say teachers have it hard sometimes too!

nicea · 27/12/2018 08:07

@MummySharkBabyShark my personal favourite age to work with is between 2-3 years!

Why do many nursery staff say ‘they’ve had a great day’ when my child hasn’t eaten, has clearly been crying, hasn’t napped etc and is generally not settling?

nicea · 27/12/2018 08:08

@DrWhy I definitely would actually. It's a much better nursery than a lot we had viewings for.

OP posts:
nicea · 27/12/2018 08:09

@femalepresentingnipples I've found that 6mnth old babies and 2 year olds + are the best at settling in quite quickly. It's those in the range of 1-2 that tend to have the most issues but that's just what I've seen from my experience.

OP posts:
nicea · 27/12/2018 08:10

@HettieBettie I don't know, that's foreign to me! We are always completely honest with our parents and keep a record of food, naps, general mood to send home with our children each day.

Do you take them outside in all weathers and regularly? Does your Manager clearly follow correct protocol when it come to infection control?

As a Nursery inspector it astounds me at how little and irregular the staff take the children outside. “ But it’s cold” are often the words I hear from staff and the children are barely taken outside, if at all.

nicea · 27/12/2018 08:16

@RedWineIsFabulous infection control is always followed completely, yes.

Our 2+ year wing are always brought outside every single day at least twice.

Our under 2's usually get out for at least a walk in the pram once a day but if the weather is bad (heavy rain, hail etc) we do tend to keep them in.

Any tips to help an 11 month old settle? My son was the same age when he started and it broke my heart as he was so upset. My second starts in a few weeks.

kimlo · 27/12/2018 08:32

@RedWineIsFabulous we free flow, I was under the impression that free flow is normal now where the nursery set up allows it. Is it not? I find it sad if not, I can't imagine being stuck inside the same room for however many hours the nursery is open.

FestiveNut · 27/12/2018 08:36

How long does it take the average one year old baby to settle? How long do they cry for on the first few days after mum has left?

donkir · 27/12/2018 08:54

@Kimlo we also free flow. My ds goes to the nursery I work at and spends 90% of his days outside as that's where he's happiest.
Our under 2 room (my room) can't free flow as we're upstairs but the crawlers/walkers go out for at least an hour a day regardless of weather.

evilharpy · 27/12/2018 08:58

Honestly, do you have favourite children and ones you like less?

MrsTeach · 27/12/2018 09:18

People asking how long it takes certain age groups to settle, just be ready for the answer to not apply to your child. It's not just the age but the personality and other factors around the child that have an impact.

Also working in a nursery harder than teaching? They both have their challenges but I wouldn't agree that one is harder than the other.

No sh1t, Sherlock. Hmm I would still like the answer though.

donkir · 27/12/2018 09:27

@FestiveNut there is no average 1yr old so there is no answer to your question. 1yr olds tend to be harder to settle as they recognise that mum is leaving. We've had 1yr olds require no settling but others have taken 6 months. It generally quicker to settle the more days you do. We have one child who only does a day a week so it has taken her a lot longer to settle. If she's poorly for the day and doesn't come in then we go back to square one.

@FestiveNut ** and a very merry Christmas to you too Grin

FestiveNut · 27/12/2018 09:30

And a happy New Year @MrsTeach. Enjoy the Spring term.

Sinisers · 27/12/2018 09:32

Do you judge a child's poor behaviour on their parents?

Is there an age that you like working with the most?

Do you form close bonds with some children and when they leave do you miss them?
