That's it really.

Why are they demolishing? Hope it’s not a dumb question! I’m totally fascinated with NK. Did you ever see that film A State of Mind about the Mass Games? Is NK still like this, I wonder?

How old were the people in your group? Teens? Young adults?

NachoLibrary · 27/09/2018 16:58

I assume it's to regenerate the area. The new streets are allocated to certain groups e.g. scientists. Made me wonder if that was to make it easier to annihilate them!

The group was mixed in age. Youngest was early 20s I think and oldest 40-50 ish.

Just watching the MP programme

Enjoying it

MarthasGinYard · 27/09/2018 21:50

The woman who is his guide seems lovely

Clearly so uncomfortable with any questions re leaders

NachoLibrary · 27/09/2018 22:25

Ours were like that too although I was struck by how casually she was dressed at one point (before the hiking part). Ours were always dressed very formally. We went to Kaesong but only for lunch so didn't see the old buildings.

I was Shock at the 'airport manager' in all his splendid regalia for the 1 flight per day at that deserted airport.

It's just so odd

I was surprised how beautiful some of the rural areas were TBH

It must have been really interesting though.

I remember a colleague going a few years ago. He said all the food was just a different shade of grey or brown slop.

I thought it was sweet when they presented MP with his birthday cake

AppleKatie · 27/09/2018 22:32

Did you feel watched?

NachoLibrary · 27/09/2018 22:45

No, although we were chaperoned at all times by the guides so in effect I guess we were watched.

We were concsious that maybe the hotel room was bugged though so didn't say "damn the illustrious leaders" or anything that could get us into trouble.

We did give them some, ahem, entertainment though Blush.

nacho Grin I'll bet

mumof06darlings · 27/09/2018 22:57

Were there a lot of other tourists there?

mumof06darlings · 27/09/2018 22:58

Did anything there make you feel very uneasy?

LucheroTena · 27/09/2018 23:04

Is it still pitch black at night with no lights?
Is it super clean?

NachoLibrary · 28/09/2018 07:29

Were there a lot of other tourists there?

I think they cap the number in the country at any one time but we saw other tour groups. We tended to follow the same itenerary so we'd see them in the coach park and at lunch/dinner.

Did anything there make you feel very uneasy?

Not really.

Is it still pitch black at night with no lights

Pyongyang was lit up at night. Some buildings were illuminated.

Is it super clean?
The state gives everyone a job so the streets are always being cleaned. There was no litter. Inside the hotel was very dated though.

What made you want to go there? Was it nosiness? It’s not exactly the nicest place

TulipsInBloom1 · 28/09/2018 07:40

How interesting!

Did you see any children? Were they happy?

MrsCar · 28/09/2018 10:25

Were you allowed to take pictures?

MrsCar · 28/09/2018 10:26

*photos, not to be confused with removing pictures Wink

NachoLibrary · 28/09/2018 13:16

What made you want to go there?

General curiosity mostly. I suppose it's the same as people wanting to visit Cuba a few years ago. NK is trying to become a tourist destination so I wanted to see it before it changed too much. This is totally outing but I changed my username for this AMA so I guess it doesn't matter, but we were there for our honeymoon!

Did you see any children? Were they happy?

Loads! The children all wear a red scarf to signify their membership of the youth league (can't remember the actual name). We also visited an extra-curricula center which is where kids are pretty much hot-housed in all manner of talents. We saw tiny children paying flute with perfection, embroidering, dancing etc. They looked dedicated if anything, but kids on the street seemed happy.

Were you allowed to take pictures

Yes, it's much freer than you'd imagine. The only rules were: no photos of military people (the one exception to this is in the DMZ where they let you take 1 photo in a group); no photos of construction (they are weirdly embarrassed about things not being perfect); and finally, if you took a photo of the leaders (statues, photos, paintings etc) you had to have them all in frame. In reality no one checks what you're taking photos off so it's pretty easy to break those rules. We were also asked to put cameras down when we went through checkpoints on the way from Pyongyang to the DMZ.

Thank you.

What’s to stop you just going off on your own?

AppleKatie · 28/09/2018 17:36

What do you think the quality of life is like for people?

IHaveBrilloHair · 28/09/2018 18:16

Are there shops, I mean I suppose there must be, but could you go in them, what do they sell?
(I'm aware this makes me sound ridiculous but I can't get my head around a country so different)

spinabifidamom · 28/09/2018 19:47

Did you understand the language?

Sorry10 · 28/09/2018 19:51

Why did you go ?

MardAsSnails · 28/09/2018 19:52

I’m looking at doing a fly in and out trip. Did you go via Beijing? If so, did you need a multi entry Chinese visa and was that easy to get?

I’m intrigued by it and want to go so badly
