mikeTV not at all, I don't mind sorting through clean keks, and ragging them... it's the skiddy encrusted boxers that are just nasty!
How long have you done it for? just under a year
Do you think Mary Portas and her charity shop overhaul had a positive effect? I hated the effect she had on volunteers, they're the blood of a charity shop without them they just don't run. Yeah she made them more money but at what cost to the local community?
Do men buy a lot of underwear that you know is for themseves? we don't sell knickers or bras, so not in our shop.
And men buying womens shoes? not yet, but I'm sure they do.
I once had a couple buy loads of my shoes when I did a car boot sale. They didnt even look at the sizes. They couldnt get them in the bag quick enough! Maybe they put them on Ebay grin, they probably did, there's a market for worn shoes
Possibly slightly off topic but can you offer any suggestions as to what I should do with clothes that are no longer good enough to give to charity? Hate sending to landfill find a charity that will rag items that are not quite sellable, although you'd be surprised, they might be able to sell the items.
Hi OP. A friend volunteered at a charity shop. She was asked to clear out surplus stock from the storage shed into a skip. She said it was heartbreaking seeing what was being just thrown away, and that staff/other volunteers took other items home too instead of putting them in the skip. She didn't think the people who had donated all the items would be at all happy if they knew what had happened to them, and it put her off volunteering there. It sounds like this isn't your experience? Thankfully not, if an item is un-sellable we will sell it for rag, if it's something that is missing pieces like a game we will bin it. I think because we do sell for rag, and do have a fast turnover of stock I think that helps to ensure that things people donate are never binned.
Namethecat i think the worst thing, was a bag of clothing that had food waste in it, and when we opened it, it was full of maggots
hundreds of them all over the floor. It was proper grim.
