Ex-NHS worker here. I can swap you some horrible tales of people with things stuck in their orifices (or on their appendages in the case of men left alone with vacuum cleaners Grin ).

wombatron · 29/07/2018 22:53

Are there days where it really is boring and mundane? How often is it really that fast paced?

31weeksgone · 29/07/2018 22:55

Oh yes, the fair old item stuck up the bum Grin

On an average day, how many patients would you consider to be time wasters and not an emergency?

I hear ridiculous reasons for people having gone to A and E and it’s so frustrating that more isn’t done to educate people on this.

For example, one of my students had been to A and E because they hadn’t been for a poo for three days and another thought they had head lice so went to A and E.

I appreciate people can’t get Gp appointments in a timely fashion these days but surely most people can differentiate between what is an actual accident/ emergency and what isn’t.

Do you consider yourself a really capable and efficient person in real life? How stressful do you find your job?

Roseformeplease · 29/07/2018 23:15

What proportion of your patients are

a) wasting time as have something minor could sort themselves?

b) Need a GP only?

c) are drunk?

HarrietSchulenberg · 29/07/2018 23:24

Is this your dream career or do you dream of doing something else?

31weeksgone · 29/07/2018 23:30

Re patients wasting time/how much of day are patients wasting time.

When we go into our department (as I’m sure they all are around the UK) we have a “minor injuries” “Major injuries” and Highcare/Ressucitation area. And somebody will be out front triaging to put them into a category. This is where you hear of the “8 hour wait at A&E” because there’s often at least 2+ hours of patients to triage.

Once they’ve been triaged they’ll then be placed in the appropriate area. Unless it’s chest pain you come straight in, ambulance often comes straight into majors or resuss if they’ve had to do CPR etc.

So we will get placed on 1/3 areas for the shift. If we’re in minors that’s where all of the “time wasters” generally come in, and yes. More often than not they could of gone to the pharmacy, or their own GP, or the chemist. Mind you, the GP is mostly responsible because it seems if they’re unsure of anything here they’ll send straight round to A&E!

It was my dream job, and probably still is, if I worked with a nicer team.

I do consider myself an efficient person, in life and at work. But work is stressful. I go home and cry a lot, in sheer frustration.

In the more serious majors/highcare at least 30% of a shift is drunks being found on the street unconscious, and at night/weekends that probably goes up to 50%.

Wombatron, honestly it is that fast paced. Between maybe 4-6AM it all quietens down generally, but the rest of the time it’s manic. Horrible. We walk 5+ miles a shift just rushing around because I always track the steps on my phone. It truly is bedlam. (Not sure why I’m still fat as I’m always bloody walking/running somewhere! Sad)

OP posts:
Roseformeplease · 29/07/2018 23:35

And drunks? I read that alcohol causes a huge number of admissions. Am in Scotland so might be different (worse?)

31weeksgone · 29/07/2018 23:44

And in the sense of boring/mundane, everyday is different but generally you’ll have the same problems coming back in. Drunks, excessive bleeding/chest pains. So not mundane, but it can be repetitive. For example the other day 12 patients in a row were chest pains. So that’s 12 ECG’s in a row. 12 Cardiac Bloods. 12 same procedures and drugs (generally).

Have you worked in other departments and did you as my friend did lose weight?

ilovetomatoes · 29/07/2018 23:51

How do you switch off? There must be some awful cases that are hard to let go of. Thanks for your work, you are amazing.

31weeksgone · 30/07/2018 00:33

I have worked in other departments, none of them have made me lose weight Wink it’s baby weight I tell you! Lol.

Thank you, but we’re just doing our jobs. The deaths of babies upset me to my core and I find it hard to go home after that. I know that I’ve done my best and I couldn’t change anything. Death comes to all of us eventually. If it was dignified and I made the family a cup of tea and held the dead persons hand whilst they passed, that’s enough for me to sleep at night.

(Some of my colleagues are very “toughened” to it and can shut a dying person into a side room to pass away alone. I can’t ever ever do this)

What has been your funniest patient case?

PanGalaticGargleBlaster · 30/07/2018 08:44

What is your policy on dating patients? I was in A&E years ago with a rugby injury and struck up a friendly rapport with one of the nurses treating me, she was gorgeous and funny. Really wanted to ask her out while I was having a dislocated ankle put back in but I did not want to make a complete twat of myself as I knew I was high as kite on painkillers and was terrified of mistaking her bedside manner as 'flirting'

31weeksgone · 30/07/2018 10:59

Funniest patient case - a man with a butt plug stuck. Sorry, we really don’t laugh at anybody but it did make me smile. Smile

We’re not allowed to date patients or be flirty towards them at all. However once your treatment was over you could always leave the hospital, and then come back in not as a patient (in an hour or so) and give her your number. Or ask her when she finishes work. Smile

How did you get it out?

31weeksgone · 30/07/2018 20:30

We used lubricating jelly to have a feel and try to get it but unsuccessful. Doctors were called because they’re allowed to be a bit more “forceful” and used a sort of speculum and some tweezer forceps.

Does the average A&E nurse have much training in mental health?
Many people attending A&E these days are doing so due to being in mental health crisis or having self harmed.
What do A&E staff feel about someone attending A&E for medical attention having deliberately self harmed?

jasjas1973 · 30/07/2018 21:01

I love AE nurses, i ve been there loads of times for bicycle & M/C accidents!
They are always so patient, apart from the pair of lunatics that did'nt read my notes (broken collar bone) and yanked my tee shirt off me, whilst i screamed!!!
I ve just broken my hip and again, despite a bit of a wait, they are just all soooo kind and funny.
My question is: how do you do you manage it? your pay is shitte and you always seem rushed of your feet.

31weeksgone · 30/07/2018 21:11

We have a little bit of training on mental health, and it does get renewed frequently. But the way it works we will patch them up and stop the physical problem they’ve come in with, injuries/heart rate/drunk etc. Then the mental health team will come in and see them and takeover. But these can be very long waits.

I’m not sure how we do it to be honest, love of the job and a good team. My team isn’t great, so I’m leaving to move to another department.

Do you get angry/frustrated with the time wasters?

MissConductUS · 30/07/2018 23:39

Former A&E nurse here. Did this make the news in the UK last year? An RN in Utah working in the emergency dept. was arrested for not letting a cop do a blood draw on on unconscious patient, which was exactly what she was supposed to do.

Utah Officer Suspended over Nurse Arrest

31weeksgone · 31/07/2018 15:31

I don’t get frustrated if it’s parents bringing kids in cause as a parent myself I know how scary it is if your child is ill and it’s just a cold etc.

I get frustrated when people are risking innocent people’s lives eg drink driving. But never show that I’m frustrated I might just not make them a cup of nice coffee, they get water. Wink

It didn’t make the news as far as I’m aware, I don’t follow the news closely.
