This one may be a bit dull but ask away.

Do you have any tips you wish to share?
I'm looking to lose quite a lot of weight: probably at least 5 stone, maybe as much as 7.
Also, dunno if this is something you could also answer or give your opinion on: what weight range should I be aiming for at 5 ft 9? Do I go by BMI? Or do I go by those height/weight charts?

tillytillytilly2018 · 18/07/2018 10:19

What do you think of a vegan diet?

What’s the healthiest diet?

Do you think the mediterranean diet is the best?

What diet would you advise for someone struggling to get pregnant?

Thank you 😊🙏

doesthisseemright · 18/07/2018 10:19

Ihopeyourcakeisshot The best is a slightly higher protein proportion and lower carb. Also, weight training helps. Building up lean muscle mass is the key.

Mikecheck12 Yes I do eat healthily but that includes having a healthy attitude to and relationship with food so eat "normally" :)
I don't drink but think its ok in moderation. I wouldn't rely on the health benefits either.

Do you practice what you preach? Or do you have days of eating crap followed by takeaway

Ihopeyourcakeisshit · 18/07/2018 10:25

Thanks does
My th is working on a beginner's guide to weight training programme for me.
Apparently i start this eveningConfused

doesthisseemright · 18/07/2018 10:25

Dryasa thingysfootwear Thats a tricky one as I dont think I preach but pretty much I eat well. Rarely eat takeaway but I do like biscuits and cakes. Wont lie.

How can people learn to eat 'normally' after years of diets?

And are there rules for frequency or quantity of less healthy foods? Avoiding certain foods or food groups has a rebound effect for me (GIVE ME THE FUCKING PASTA!) but I don't understand how to decide when it's ok to eat them.

doesthisseemright · 18/07/2018 10:27

charm23 my main tips:

  1. not one diet for all - you may suit low carb, low cal, intuitive eating. Find the one for you
  2. take some time to think about what got you to where you are weight wise before you even think about a diet.
  3. I aim for 10% weight loss rather than BMI scales. Or I use non weight goals.

tillytillytilly2018 The vegan diet is fine as long as people make sure they get all of their nutrients. Its much easier these days too!
I do like the Med diet as the best, yes and following this type of diet is best if you are TTC. Take it easy, look after yourself and follow a healthy eating pattern which includes lots of colours!

Is the Keto Diet good For Autoimmune thyroid disease?

How can people learn to eat 'normally' after years of diets? with a lot of support- learning to eat intuitively. I recommend the Intuitive eating book by evelyn tribole

And are there rules for frequency or quantity of less healthy foods? The 80/20 rule

you need to buy that book!

I'm 'training' for a half-marathon at the end of September. (I say 'training' - I'm not really following any proper plan just getting myself out there as much as possible, though I do have a rough idea of what and when I'm doing.) I'm also technically low-carbing - have done for a year and lost 2.5 stone, but have most definitely had the munchies recently. My BMI is currently 21.7 so am not too bothered about my weight. However, I do notice I get a woolly head and IBS-like symptoms if I do eat carbs, so I'm probably best trying to avoid the cravings if I can.

Anyway, I have 10.5 weeks before the Big Day. What should I be thinking food-wise in that time? And, more importantly, what tips can you give me for the day before and the day itself? Many thanks!

(PS I'm aware this is the sort of advice I should be paying you for, but you did say we could ask you anything!)

whingeyarse · 18/07/2018 10:33

I have it Blush but not read it yet. Glad it comes recommended!

doesthisseemright · 18/07/2018 10:33

pointlessusername I haven't seen much evidence for keto and AI. Possible for lowering grains though. I'm not anti keto but its really hard to maintain.

pointless I mean gluten-containing grains and foods, sorry

What do you think of intermittent fasting - 5/2 16/8 type diets?

doesthisseemright · 18/07/2018 10:39

madforfootball oh no, I am not a sports dietitian so would worry about giving any specifics but I would suspect you need to start to pop some carbs in there. I'd start with small amounts of things like oats, dairy carbs, quinoa etc and distribute through the day. Lighter training days will need fewer carbs.

Any sports Dietitians on here??

What advise do you give to those v obese and wanting not to be?

doesthisseemright · 18/07/2018 10:41

Ishouldntbesolucky The IF diet (5/2) was actually the brain child of a Dietitian called Michelle Harvie and has reasonable evidence for effectiveness as a strategy just like any other weight loss plan. I think the 16/8 is weird as it just reduces your eating opportunities.

doesthisseemright · 18/07/2018 10:42

adventuresRUs get some support and be kind to yourself would be my advice

Is it possible to lose 5 stone in under a year??

Any suggestions to make weight loss faster
thanks

My DS is 10 and wants to go vegan after he read Charlotte's Web at school 😁. I told him we'd try a few vegan meals and packed lunches over the holidays and up our veggie days. Is it advisable for a child that's still growing to go vegan?

JulianOfNorwich · 18/07/2018 10:53

DS (11) was referred to NHS programme with dietitian after his Year 6 weigh in (obese).
8 week course was generally very good ... but they still push the low fat approach, not low carbs.
I'm low carbing myself- and steadily losing weight- lost 1 stone in 6 weeks. Should I reduce carbs for my son? Is it appropriate or effective for children? Why do NHS dietitians not seem to follow the most up to date thinking?

Whitelisbon · 18/07/2018 10:56

Ds has multiple severe food allergies, and is drastically underweight (28kgs, 135cm tall, 12 yo). I've been told to try to bulk him up a bit. Any ideas?
He's allergic to dairy, eggs, wheat, nuts, peanuts, soya, strawberries and kiwi. He can't eat raw banana, and he can only tolerate a little rice (and can't tolerate rice milk at all).
