This one may be a bit dull but ask away.

Apologies if already covered but why did my dietician tell me to eat Oatibix for my breakfast with skimmed milk? I have gestational diabetes which if I'd followed my dietician's advice I'd be on insulin for but as it is I totally ignored her advice and followed a high fat, high protein and low complex carb diet. In 10 weeks I've had 3 fasting highs never above 6 and 2 high day readings because I double carbed. I remain diet controlled. I've also lost a stone (ie I weigh now at 36 wks pregnant the same as I did at booking in.

My DD is 7 she does big poos on a rare occasion there are spots of of blood on the paper when she wipes. I give her orange juice daily 1/3 of a mug her diet is fairly good, fresh and raw fruit and veg. What would help soften her stool or reduce the bulk maybe.

When a patient is on the threshold of being underweight and continues to lose weight in hospital. Why do you prescribe ensure drinks that even a fit person would struggle with, then you see obese patients on TPN. Why would you not advocate at least some form of tube feeding? Why also from knowing patients with issues like gastroparesis would you feed via NG:PEG when vomiting is inevitable. Surely common sense dictates NJ:PEJ feeding.

Sorry likely sounding a bit annoyed. But losing 7lbs + in a week whilst under your care should ring alarm bells.

Also why is your first thought psychiatric issues in women from what I've seen? When in men they get treated so differently and often have to fight for an ED diagnosis.

Is there a shortage of dieticians?

I was wondering what you think about water fasting ?
Only drinking water , no food whatsoever ?

WeightorWhite · 27/08/2018 14:53

I've just started the Keto diet a d doing really well. I've also started cycling.

The weight is coming off really well, I've a lot to lose (5at Confused).

My idea is to lose on Keto and then maintain on calorie counting?

Good idea or not?

Hi doesthisseemrigh great thread.

I'm another one with a teen (13.5yo) with low bmi. Well actually it's around 1 at the moment. I have mentioned this both at our own surgery and at hospital appointments but the doctors seem unconcerned as he is active & healthy.

He has a good diet, can often eat more than me but has some intolerance to gluten (family history of this too). When I've suggested testing in the past he has been very reluctant but is it worth pushing? Could there be some other reason for the low weight gain?

He's never been above the 15th centile but it's obviously dropping as he grows in height.

The most interesting AMA thread I've come across on MN. Smile

If you are still taking questions, OP, I would like to ask if it's possible to regain a food tolerance and if so, how can I do this?

My intolerances include dairy, gluten, onion family, peppers, tomatoes, spices, coffee, cola, chocolate, aspartame, most food additives.

Thanks.

This is such an interesting thread, thank you!

I'm not sure this is really a dietitian qu, but in case you know...

You mentioned quercetin upthread, I took a quercetin supplement for a month or two as I thought there was a chance I had a histamine intolerance and read it would help as anti-inflammatory.

It has actually helped but I recently read that it moderates oestrogen production.

Have you heard that or know anything about it?

(I'm not sure I am keen on messing with hormonal balance.)

UserThenLotsOfNumbers

'I have ulcerative colitis.'

Just answering this without finishing the thread or I'll lose your post. My son also has severe UC and Crohn's and was put on the FODMAP diet until his new specialist confirmed my son's belief that it was making things very much worse. He moved to the SCD and although it was very tough indeed for the first few months, it made a radical difference. Instead of regularly needing hospitalisation for 75 mg of IV prednisolone with its attendant vile side effects, he has gradually come to be able to avoid steroids entirely. He has now got to the point where he will eat only fruit all day and then have a normal evening meal and his body seems to accept that and not bleed constantly. If he starts with the pain and bloating, he goes straight back to a few days of only blended fruit and the bleeding doesn't start.

I am very much NOT a qualified nutritional expert but we have lived with this for eleven years and have come to understand what does and doesn't work for him. The SCD made a radical difference and his mental health improved hugely as the diet took effect, which was wonderful. As doctors increasingly recognise now, mental health is inextricably linked with poor bowel health.

Anyway, just FWIW

Gosh, I haven't been on for some time and didn't realise there were so many questions unanswered. My apologies- didn't mean to appear rude.
