But Judaism and Christianity were around for centuries before Mohammed was even born, so all those people before couldn't be Muslims, could they? (confused)

It is the most stupid concept I have heard. And as the newest religion, it is a very very arrogant take on the matter. Everyone is born muslim. Hell no. I am born human and die human. My parents decided what religion I was raised in, I decide what I will practice.

Red2017 · 14/07/2018 23:02

Lol so Muslims aren't human then?

Pemba · 15/07/2018 02:38

That's not what nervous meant, Red as I'm sure you know really. They were just saying that everyone is born human .... and a blank slate as far as religion and culture are concerned. The 'revert' concept is actually offensive.

But Christianity was guilty of similar arrogance up until quite recently. All those 'missions' in Asia, Africa and the Americas often forcibly baptising the local people and suppressing their own religions and culture. Jewish children in Europe being secretly baptised Catholic behind their parents' backs was also a thing - in one famous 19th century case the child was then legally removed from their family.

Any religion can be guilty of arrogance, and none should be above criticism. You can't just say 'well these are our beliefs, so it's not arrogance. Keep it respectful'. That's not on.

Do you believe that non Muslims will go to Hell (sorry, i cant remember the Islamic equivalent) on the basis that they aren't Muslim?

Why do you believe there is a deity? And why do you believe that your deity is the real one, opposed to the 3000 or so other Gods believed in throughout history?

Really curious Smile

Why would it be hard to see old friends? And why would it be hard to wear the hijab if you're a muslim by choice?

387I2 · 15/07/2018 06:09

I read parts of the Quran in translation into my own language (the 1917 edition as it happens) and found it very hard to grasp for various reasons.

What is your view of it? For example the little texts being ordered after size and place of authorship. If you have not yet read it in full, why is that?

Battleax · 15/07/2018 06:27

I have heard of it before, but I do find the idea that everyone who converts to Islam is a 'revert' not a convert, as apparently all babies are magically born Muslim to be arrogant bollocks.

Well that’s fine. We say convert and the converts can say reverts.

QuackPorridgeBacon · 15/07/2018 13:52

If you feel awkward covering your hair then just don’t, it’s not required so why do it? Do you want people to look at you and instantly know your religion? Does it validate you? Also, why are you being stared at? If your religion teaches that everyone is Muslim then why would they stare at you? Surely they are taught the same so should just be overjoyed with adding another member to their religion. These are genuine questions by the way.
