What convinced you that Islam was true?

Happypenguin1 · 10/07/2018 20:54

No I don't feel fully accepted by the different ethnic backgrounds, but people my own age yes
The fun thing about being a Muslim is Ramadan, getting together most nights with friends and eating together, really nice environment.
Thank you Gardengreek

Why? What/ who started it off for you? Did you have or had you been brought up in any other faith? Did you have a 'lightning bolt' moment or was it a slow thing? I know a few white British Muslim women and I'd love to ask, I never would because it's none of my business of course!

Yes, I've been looking for a new place to go and meet new people!!
Yes Allah is watching them haha, we can say that
It was gradual, I stopped eating pork about 6 years ago, as a friend explained to me why they don't eat it and I researched myself and didn't, then I started learning more about Islam, and decided that it was for me

Have you read ‘from my sisters lips’? It’s a wonderful account of a revert sister in London who is a devout Muslim, a feminist, an intellectual and a committed loving mother and wife. The book stayed with me a long time and got me chatting deeply with some of my Muslim friends about their faith.

Happypenguin1 · 10/07/2018 21:11

No I haven't but I've been looking for a good book to read, thank you
Be back in the morning :-) x

But the men dressing modestly means they're dressed like other men - jeans, tshirts, trousers, shirts. Why don't men (and boys) have to cover hair, heads and faces and disguise the shape of their bodies? It makes the women stand out more than men clothing wise.

nervousnails · 12/07/2018 16:58

Is there a freedom of choice in your religion? The very fact that the religion alludes to everyone being a muslim is deeply troubling and very stifling. Does it not bother you?

nervousnails · 12/07/2018 16:59

Oh one more about the concept of 'haram'. Alcohol, pork etc are haram. What about drugs? Or any other addiction?

Oliversmumsarmy · 12/07/2018 17:09

Why do Muslims think all babies are born Muslim and not Jewish or Christian or whatever their parents religion is.

lostinjapan · 12/07/2018 18:06

What nationality are you? And what nationality are your parents? Were both your parents Muslim, and are they practicing Muslims or not?

Xenia · 12/07/2018 18:10

So you regard every atheist on this as Muslim then and every new born baby on the planet? At what point does the child stop being muslim eg if the parents have it christened in a church or as the child does not actively choose that do you still regard it as muslim? Do you think all atheists still have the Muslim nature with which they are born and are still muslims or is it if they declare there is no God at that point they stop being muslims and become apostates?

About 9 countries of the world all muslims have the death penalty for apostates. Do you think they are wrong?

Currently on holiday somewhere extremely hot. I always feel awful for the daughters covered up in the pool, whilst their little brothers are free to enjoy the water in their trunks. Just doesn’t seem fair, likewise, the women , covered, in wet swimming outfits, must be so uncomfortable. Of course, the husbands are enjoying the sun and water in their trunks. It does make me angry about the message this is sending to the children. My partner is Muslim by the way, so please, no accusations of racism.

Xenia · 12/07/2018 18:37

Yes, in some places it is very much interpreted in a sxist way. I have been in Iran on business and seen men covering a beach wearing speedos and women in full burkha. In our local private gym here in London we have some women covering right up for swimming and the men certainly do not cover up anything like as much.

Oliversmumsarmy · 12/07/2018 19:51

If you cannot leave Islam do you think the number of practicing Muslims in the world is over stated.

(Know many people who say they were born Muslim and are counted as Muslim but who drink, women who wear short skirts, men and women who have children who haven't been indoctrinated into any religion or have taken on the religion of their partner and haven't been inside a Mosque for years.)

pinkmagic1 · 12/07/2018 20:16

How did you meet your husband? Were you introduced by friends/the mosque? Is he also a white revert or a Muslim of another ethnicity?

Pemba · 14/07/2018 19:01

I see the OP has disappeared.

I have heard of it before, but I do find the idea that everyone who converts to Islam is a 'revert' not a convert, as apparently all babies are magically born Muslim to be arrogant bollocks. Ludicrous idea.

100% agree this idea that we’re all born Muslim is sheer arrogance. How dare they think for me.

Red2017 · 14/07/2018 21:30

The idea of everyone being born a muslim comes from the word fitra (arabic) which is the natural state everyone is born in.. a concept in Islam
However some stay muslim, some not,
some brought up with a different faith or no faith at all therefore, not muslim
The concept of qadr (predestination) also comes into play .. we believe everything is written for us before we are born .. whether we are muslim .. how much money we attain in our lifetime.. marriage, children etc.
It isn't arrogance.. it's a belief .. you are fully within your rights to disagree and I fully accept not everyone will agree or believe in it .. however keep it respectful
