My neighbors are settled travellers as are a few others on the road And unless you knew them well or they told you you wouldnt know they are travellers.

The girls are educated and the boy is well mannered and lovelyThey play out with the other kids and other than going to church alot they are like every other kid
They travel for some of year and we watch their house/water the garden. Im always amazed by how pristine the house is
I love it when they come feed my pets if im away because they always proper clean my house and trim my garden and fill up my freezer with meals Grin

Your getting an unfair pasting here op. Some seem determined to blame you for the actions of others because you have the same heritage Hmm

TakeABreak2 · 10/07/2018 19:31

souledout i often have convo with people in the park not so much in the supermarket because i get stressed there lol and people (usually older women) stop and talk to my children i dmile awkwardly because im not the best conversation maker but i have no problem with this

I don't think anyone's blames the op for the behaviour of other travellers, but they definitely seem to tar the traveller's reputation.
How are these groups of travellers viewed by you, are they more of a separate group?
Also, I like the way that children are kept young but this seems at odds with the very sexualised clothing that is shown.
Thanks

i aggree about the clothing but at the same time there will always be a travelling boy near by to look after the girl and travelling boys know what the can/cant do around travelling girls

I saw a TV programme where a traveller mum said breastfeeding is dirty. Is that a cultural belief or was it just her?

buckingfrolicks · 10/07/2018 19:43

What a very interesting thread - thank you OP.

Do travellers respect older travellers because they are older people? or is youth and strength respected most?

SubtitlesOn · 10/07/2018 19:44

I am glad the tide has turned for the LGBT in your community SmileSmileSmile

We used to live down the road from a permanent site (with static homes) that caused no problems in the community SmileSmileSmileSmile

However, the travelling ones that invade the local parks, end of our driveway (that has a large grass area beyond our fence so next to the road. It now has a built up bank surrounding it to stop them returning - thank goodness), and playing fields for local schools cause so much damage and leave human waste for others to clear up AngryAngryAngryAngryAngryAngry

I get that you want the caravan toilet/bathroom to stay sparkling clean and use it as a storage area but why is it seen as OK in your community to leave human waste behind? AngryAngryAngryAngry

Hello OP

I'm also in Leeds but have little knowledge of the traveller community other than what I've seen on TV. This is a really interesting thread, thank you.

But - and it know it's a bit of a cliche - we actually had our garden path tarmacced by some very nice traveller chaps 25 years ago. It was in a shocking state and they just knocked at the door as they had been doing a neighbour's drive. I have to say they did a top job and it is still going strong!

The hair/beauty salon I go to has some traveller ladies who use it regularly. The owner is my friend and he says they are excellent customers and very generous tippers.

I have a question, and apologies if you have already answered it. If your children decided that they wanted to study say medicine, law or accountancy - professions that would possibly see them moving away from the traveller way of life, would the community support them or be disappointed?

As I said, I only really know what I've seen on TV, which of course isn't necessarily a true depiction. I just remember feeling a bit sad about all the young people who had left school early to work for their Dad or get married because of cultural expectations, who might not have fulfilled their potential. Traveller children are just as clever as non-traveller children, there could be some magnificent brain surgeons in waiting out there who perhaps just aren't encouraged to study.

buckingfrolicks probably the elders get the most respect

andiwouldwalk500yards my husband is currently doing exteroir painting in leeds the same way as your path fixers came lol so if you get a knock dont be scared lol and i dont know id have to cross that bridge if i came to it i think its be looked upon by some and some would be happy for them old fashioned travellers would frown upon it i suppose

Can I ask why boys and girls are treated so differently, as in what they are allowed to say and do, and how you feel about that?

TakeABreak2 · 10/07/2018 20:05

i dont know how to answer this one it is true but i dont know why?

Do you feel that girls are under pressure to marry young?

Spongblobsparepants · 10/07/2018 20:08

I see so many school age traveller children not in school on a daily basis in our town, which has a large settled community of Irish travellers and Romany gypsies. The boys seem to be going to work with their fathers and the girls out shopping with their mothers or friends. Why do traveller children not go to school past primary age and what good does a tutor (presumably paid for by the LA) for a couple of hours a week do?

Is there any reason why traveller parents seem to 'get away with' not educating their children while settled parents don't?

Also, I've met many travellers who can't read or write but are very on the ball when it comes to money and finances. Is numeracy valued over literacy?

LeeBee11 · 10/07/2018 20:08

Hi takeAbreak2
I'm also in Leeds, we had our drive cleaned by a passing travelled guy. He did a great job and was really nice. I have a question I also watched some of those programs about traveller's the thing that really surprised me is how some of the young girls dressed, crop tops shorts skirts. How do you dress your children? Also the huge wedding dresses what do you do with them afterwards? Would take up so much space.

TakeABreak2 · 10/07/2018 20:10

ohmeohmy defo not
alot of girls get married 18/19/20 which is young but near enough every girl isnt aloud a bf untill there at least 16

Deadringer · 10/07/2018 20:15

So girls aren't told anything about sex, and breastfeeding seems to be an issue because of modesty, but yet the girls seem to dress very sexily from a fairly young age? I am basing this only on what I have seen on TV so apologies if they don't dress like that in real life.

TakeABreak2 · 10/07/2018 20:18

deadringer girls i know where normal clothes the things youv seen is shit of mbfgw ehcih was aload of shit anyway dont get me wrong at a wedding with 300/400 people 4 or 5 15/16 yearolds will be wearing a suit (belly top and skirt) the majority will wear dress
