Ok then!

I've been working in the NHS for 21 years, in a variety of specialties and regions. Does anyone have any questions Grin

@midgeattractor do you ever know of anyone who has been wrongly diagnosed as on the spectrum? I was diagnosed with aspergers last year. I saw a clinical psychologist first who did a very detailed report and we went into everything, she said it could be attachment disorder or ASD but given my sensory issues she was leaning more towards ASD. I then saw a consultant psychiatrist for 1 hour and he disgnosed aspergers straight away. I thought it would take longer. He did have the report from the psychologist and he looked at that but he didn't go into massive detail and he didn't ask about sensory issues. I'm always paranoid I've been misdiagnosed.

Rally sounds like borderline pd

Thank you user. That's what I have been thinking.

User183737 · 20/07/2018 23:19

Is it you who is struggling xx

RallyRoundTheFlagBoys · 20/07/2018 23:25

Yes, it's me.

Stephenstickinsect · 20/07/2018 23:41

Do you not feel people just need to get on with things more. I’m from the camp of shit happens deal with it.

Blue2014 · 20/07/2018 23:48

My mum and sister are from the "shit happens - deal with it" camp.
Their mental health is spiralling. Some shit you just need some support for. Their "just deal with it" is pure avoidance.

RallyRoundTheFlagBoys · 20/07/2018 23:50

I think most people before they seek help have been just dealing with it for years..but eventually it becomes too much to deal with and people get and feel desperate.

I’ve just started seeing psychologist nhs I suffer chronic anxiety/depression
First visit she went back into when I thought it started
Asked about school, family friends etc
I get this
But later that night it brought it all back to me
The next day I was a mess, heaving
Couldn’t eat, freezing cold(heatwave) took diazepam it touch it,

Am I able to say I don’t want to go into the past, I’ve had it 35 yrs
Help me cope with my thoughts, escalating anxiety
I can’t change the past and what happened so why go there.
Nothing bad, normal things like
Deaths, relationship breakdown,change

I’m step 3-4 nhs she’s put a time frame already 12/16 weeks
Is this nice guidelines?

Also can she have input into getting me into having support worker/cpn?

I’ve been refused secondary care
I don’t fit criteria!!! Been a&e 3 times in last 7 mths suicidal

Can you refer on to secondary care ?

Blue2014 · 22/07/2018 14:08

@granadagirl - sorry it was so hard for you. For therapy with a psychologist it's normal for them to go into the past. What we know is that events from our childhood are often impacting our distress now and if we can process those childhood events we can make things better now. It often happens that it can make things seems worse straight after but it tends to get better from there with the right support. You can ask not to talk about the past, although be prepared there is a small chance she may need to refer you to some one else (psychologists tend to the longer term work, coping skills stuff would usually go to someone junior) but she might not now that you've started.

She might be able to refer to secondary care but to be honest they tend to go off their very strict referral criteria so they won't take you if you don't meet criteria.

Hope you're doing ok.

granadagirl · 22/07/2018 15:41

Blue
Are you a psychologist?

Blue2014 · 22/07/2018 18:15

Similar Granda- sorry I don't like to put myself but didn't want to leave your post unanswered Smile

Blue2014 · 22/07/2018 18:16

I meant out myself

midgeattractor · 23/07/2018 10:06

Sorry I've not been back to this for a while! I'll try and work through the questions asked, but for now, Blue, please talk to your psychologist about what you experienced after the session. Psychological therapies are always a partnership between you and the psychologist, you need to explain how the work affected you. Your psychologist will want to make sure the work is as effective as possible, and will want to know.

In your personal opinion, what is the treatment you’d recommend for PTSD? Trauma-based CBT or EMDR therapy?
I’ve been offered both.
Have done CBT before and it was helpful, but I’ve heard rave reviews of EMDR!

fantasmasgoria1 · 24/07/2018 11:18

I have bpd and I have an assessment for therapy . I’m told it’s to see which therapy would be suitable. I am wondering what to expect. I am worried because I had some therapy 3 years ago and all I did was cry and I found it too distressing to continue. I am worried this will happen again!!!!!

Iwasjustabouttosaythat · 24/07/2018 14:00

OP, what’s your opinion of the term “high functioning Autism”? And what do you think about Aspergers being ASD?

LinoleumBlownapart · 24/07/2018 14:56

Bumping because I'm also interested in Iwasjustabouttosaythat's question.

Shadowboxerbaby · 29/07/2018 20:09

Have a question but pm'd as it was rather outing, hope that's ok.

Whereland · 29/07/2018 20:20

Have you heard of the open dialogue approach and what are your thoughts on it?
