SonicScrubber Rechargeable System review: better than the original?

The SonicScrubber Rechargeable System is a handy little electric scrubber for grout, taps and hard-to-reach grime. It’s not built for cleaning an entire shower screen, but it works well for smaller detail jobs.

How I tested

I tested the SonicScrubber Rechargeable System over the course of an afternoon during a whole-house deep clean. I used it on bathroom grout, tiles, taps, limescale on a plastic shower screen, grime on a textured glass window, a gas hob and greasy splashback.

I focused on the jobs where a detail scrubber should really come into its own: corners, edges, around taps, plug holes, grout lines, greasy hob residue and patches of chalky limescale. I also looked at how comfortable it was to hold, how easy the brush heads were to swap, whether the battery lasted, how much effort it saved and whether it felt worth choosing over the original battery-powered SonicScrubber.

The SonicScrubber Rechargeable System is a useful little tool for the jobs you put off: grubby grout, limescale around taps, grime around plug holes and sticky residue around awkward hob edges. It looks a bit like an oversized electric toothbrush and works in much the same way, getting into tight corners with far less effort than a manual brush.

It works best on small, stubborn areas. The pointed brush head was excellent on grout lines and fiddly bits, while the scrubbing motion took most of the effort out of the job. It removed chalky limescale from a plastic shower screen with bathroom spray and lifted dirt from lightly grubby grout without me having to press hard.

Large surfaces are where it struggles. The biggest brush head is still relatively small at 3.8cm across, so cleaning a full shower screen, oven door or large splashback would take a while. It took me around five minutes to clear one square foot of shower screen properly, and my hand started to ache from holding the tool in the same position.

I’d buy the rechargeable version over the battery-powered original for convenience, especially as it lasted through my afternoon clean without fading. Keep an eye on the tiny silicone charging-port cover, though, as it comes right off and would be easy to lose, which would affect the scrubber's water-proofness. Overall, it’s a useful deep-cleaning gadget for kitchens and bathrooms, best for detailed grime rather than whole-room blitzing.

What’s in the box?

SonicScrubber Rechargeable System

The SonicScrubber Rechargeable System comes with the main scrubber handle and four brush heads, so you can switch between general scrubbing and more precise jobs.

  • SonicScrubber Rechargeable tool

  • medium brush

  • cone brush

  • large brush

  • soft brush

  • USB-C charging lead

There’s no plug included, but that didn’t bother me. I’ve got enough USB plugs around the house, and as it uses USB-C, the cable is easy to replace or swap with another if needed.

Can the SonicScrubber Rechargeable System be used on grout?

Yes, and this is one of the best uses for it. I used it on lightly grubby grout and it lifted dirt from the grout lines rather than just tidying up the surface. The pointed brush head was especially good here, as it could get right into the corners and edges where grout meets tile.

Compared with scrubbing by hand with an old toothbrush, it’s far less effort. The brush does the scrubbing for you, so there’s very little elbow grease involved. I didn’t have to press hard, and the slim neck helped me reach awkward areas without the tool feeling flimsy.

It also worked well around taps and plug holes, where grime gathers in little ridges and gaps. On chalky limescale, it removed build-up fully with bathroom spray, but I had to move slowly and work on one patch at a time. It performed better on the flat surface of the plastic shower screen than around curved taps, where it was harder to get pressure on every angle.

The catch is size. The largest brush head still isn’t very large at 3.8cm, so covering a big area is painstaking. It took me about five minutes to clear one square foot of the shower screen properly. I’d use it for a stubborn patch, but I’d choose a larger electric scrubber for the whole screen.

Is the SonicScrubber Rechargeable System comfortable to use?

For detail cleaning, yes. The handle has a rubberised grip that felt secure even when wet or when I was using cleaning spray. My hand didn’t ache while I was working on grout, taps and smaller areas, and the vibration didn’t feel tiring after a few minutes.

The on/off button is simple and intuitive. I much preferred it to the original version’s slide-to-stay-on control, as it’s harder to switch off accidentally when you’re mid-clean and concentrating on a grubby corner.

The brush heads are easy to attach and remove, with locked and unlocked symbols on the handle to guide you. A little grime did get trapped in the bristles, but a blast under the hot tap rinsed them clean. After an afternoon’s cleaning, they still looked good as new.

The main comfort issue came when I tried to tackle a larger area. Holding the scrubber in the same position for a long time on the shower screen made my hand start to ache. The tool itself wasn’t uncomfortable, but the small brush head makes progress slow.

It does make a noise. It’s no better or worse than other electric scrubbers I’ve used, but I wouldn’t reach for it during nap time or early in the morning if people were still asleep. It was also noisier on textured surfaces, such as the shower hose.

Is the SonicScrubber Rechargeable System good value for money?

The SonicScrubber Rechargeable System is good value if you need it for the right jobs. It’s made for detail cleaning rather than speeding through a whole bathroom. For grout, tap bases, hob edges, corners and tough little patches of limescale, it’s useful and takes a lot of strain off your wrist.

The rechargeable battery is worth paying extra for in my opinion. My scrubber lasted the whole afternoon on one charge, with consistent power throughout, and it was much more convenient than worrying about replacing two AA batteries mid-clean.

The charging port sits behind a silicone tab that’s easy to access, although the tab comes right off and is very small. I’d be careful not to lose it, as that could affect the scrubber’s waterproofness.

Performance-wise, it’s otherwise the same idea as the original SonicScrubber. You’re paying for the convenience of the rechargeable design rather than a big jump in cleaning power. I’d reach for it every week or two for awkward areas and tougher jobs, but I wouldn’t use it as my main tool for large surfaces.

For oven doors, a full shower screen or a big hob splashback, I’d choose something with a larger brush head, such as the Bosch UniversalBrush. But for the grim little areas that make a clean bathroom or kitchen look unfinished, the SonicScrubber Rechargeable System is useful, easy to use and worth having in the cupboard.
