What we like

  • Easy assembly - all it needed was to fold it out and tighten a fixing which you then clamp into place

  • Kickstand

  • Two brakes - one on the handlebar, one on the rear wheel

  • Big wheels, so much easier to go over uneven surfaces

  • Attractive colours

What we don’t like

  • Instructions could have been more detailed

  • Sometimes makes a clicky noise

What Mumsnet users say

"As a parent of older children it was difficult to get scooters that weren’t too childish, looked good and were robust. We bought oxelo scooters which were designed for adults and after much use 6years, can honestly say they were an excellent investment. I could sell them on as they are in such good condition! Build quality is first class, look cool and a smooth ride. Definitely a must for age 10+. My 18 year old son still uses it!" Brand recommended by Mumsnetter Fismit

How we tested

Mumsnet tester Jenny’s 10-year-old daughter put the OXELO Mid 9 Scooter through its paces on a variety of terrains over a testing period of several weeks, including pavements, up and down dropped kerbs, over tree roots, over rough patches of twigs, potholes and stones in the driveway, over grass, through the odd puddle and on dirt paths. Jenny also gave the scooter a go too.

Our verdict

Our testers were highly impressed by Decathlon’s OXELO Mid 9 Scooter. Its tough suspension, front and rear mudguards, double brakes and large wheels mean this tough scooter can tackle tricky terrain and is perfect for older kids who love a bit of off-roading.

Jenny said: “We love the Oxelo Mid 9. It’s a great scooter graduation from the smaller Globber 125 and my daughter could not be more pleased with it, so much so that she’ll take any opportunity to ride it, even in the rain! Her favourite things about it are how easy it feels to ride, the handlebar brake and the colours/design.

“The only dowside really is that the instructions weren’t as clear as they could be, for example, I’m still not entirely sure what height the handlebars are supposed to be, we just go by what feels comfortable!”

What’s the OXELO Mid 9 Scooter like to assemble?

The scooter arrived in a box with a handle and an A4 page of diagram-based instructions. Jenny felt the instructions could be improved, saying: “These weren’t as clear as they could be - although assembly was easy (fold out and tighten a fixing you then clamp tight) I initially tightened the fixing too much and couldn’t clamp it down or loosen it - had to use pliers!”

What’s the OXELO Mid 9 Scooter like to look at?

Jenny felt the OXELO Mid 9 made a great first impression on her daughter, adding: “It looks great and the colours are nice. We have the grey/pink and while my daughter isn’t usually into pink things, she absolutely loves this colour combo so I can’t fault the design. She loves everything about this scooter, but has said that she particularly LOVES the colours.”

What’s the OXELO Mid 9 Scooter like to use day-to-day?

“My daughter graduated to this scooter from a Globber Flow 125 which has much smaller wheels and, while a great scooter, cannot really handle rough terrain or dropped kerbs consistently,” said Jenny. “My daughter absolutely loves riding the Oxelo in comparison - the larger wheels and suspension mean that it handles slightly rougher terrain with ease, including dropped kerbs, uneven tarmac, tree roots, dirt tracks, etc. The Oxelo features a handlebar brake as well as a back wheel one, which my daughter, as a very safety-conscious child, really loves. I also appreciate the extra reassurance of the double brake system when she goes bombing off down a hill!”

Jenny noted that sometimes the scooter made a ‘clicky’ noise when ridden, but added: “It doesn’t bother my daughter or affect the rideability as far as I can tell, though, so really is quite a minor niggle!”

Jenny added: “I’ve also had a go on the scooter and found it great fun, though it did get a bit juddery on my hands/arms after a little while - I can see why it’s not recommended for journeys longer than 2km, though I’d point out that my daughter has never complained about this feature so maybe I’m just too unused to scooter travel!”

Is the OXELO Mid 9 Scooter good value for money?

Priced at £80 at the time of writing (May 7th, 2024), our Mumsnet tester feels the answer is a resounding yes, the OXELO Mid 9 Scooter is great value for money and is a good buy for older kids who prefer a solid off-roader to a stunt scooter.

Jenny said: “Although the official age range is 9-14, the height is up to 1.75m and weight 100kg, which includes a lot of adults - I’d say it’s unlikely my daughter will physically outgrow the scooter and for the amount she loves to ride it, I’d happily have paid full price.

“Obviously we’ve not had it that long yet so I can’t speak for its longevity in terms of quality, but it certainly feels hard-wearing and well-made.”
