How we tested

New mum Tamsin tested the Munchkin Pram Fan with her three-month-old during warm weather in May and June. Taking detailed notes on user-friendliness, effectiveness and quality, she put the fan to the test while out and about with her Silver Cross Reef.

Our verdict

Tamsin was really impressed with this fan, especially the bendy octopus-like arms that wrap around the pram handle or hood, keeping the fan securely in place.

"It fits very securely to our pram and doesn’t get in the way too much. The three arms make it easy to adjust and move when needed."

The fan is perfectly proportioned for the job in hand: "not too big that it would get in the way, and not too small that it wouldn’t be powerful enough." It has 360 degree movement, so you can angle it just right, then pick from the four speed settings for the perfect level of cooling for your baby.

With lights which change colour, the fan doesn't only deliver a gentle but effective breeze to keep your baby cool and comfortable, it'll also keep them entertained.

Safety-wise, there's a grille to stop curious little fingers getting caught in the fan, and the sturdy arms will keep it from coming dislodged, even on uneven ground. It has a rechargeable battery and up to eight hours' battery life (depending on which fan speed setting you're using), so you can rely on the fan to keep going on long car rides, sunny beach trips and on stuffy public transport.

While cheaper pram fans are available, this one - priced at £20 - comes from a trusted brand, so you can be sure of its quality and longevity. The versatile wrap-around arms mean it can attach to just about any pram, buggy, playpen or car seat and the colour-changing lights are an added bonus.

How easy is the Munchkin Pram Fan to set up and start using?

"It was really easy to attach to the pram, but the on button wasn’t immediately obvious. It’s also not obvious how you turn on the light. Easy to figure out when you have a play around with it!"

There's just one button on the Munchkin Pram Fan, so it's not clear straight away how to access all the features. Tamsin explains that you need to press it multiple times to cycle between fan speeds and power on/off. To get the lights, hold down the button.

The arms of the fan are pretty self-explanatory, they wind around any convenient and slim-enough part of your pram and stay nice and secure. The fan itself swivels 360 degrees, so it's easy to get the perfect angle.

The pram fan's rechargeable battery runs for about eight hours on the lowest setting, less on higher speed settings and with the lights on, so Tamsin did find it running out on longer jaunts during very hot weather.

When it needs charging, there's a USB-C changer cable, similar to a mobile phone charger, which plugs into the mains or any USB charging port.

Is the Munchkin Pram Fan effective?

"I was walking to my local town centre in the midday sun to get to an appointment. It felt quite warm in the bassinet of my pram as I couldn’t keep the pram in the shade during the whole walk. Popping the fan on kept my little one cool, and entertained with the changing coloured lights."

With their sturdy construction and man-made fabrics, prams can get surprisingly warm when the sun's out. Using a sun shade or draping a muslin cloth over the hood to create shade goes some way to lowering the temperature, but a pram fan like this one will actually keep hot and stuffy air moving.

Much like a neck fan or handheld fan, the Munchkin Pram Fan delivers a refreshing stream of air while out and about in hot weather. With four fan speed settings, you can opt for a natural breeze to a strong blast - Tamsin says the fan helps her keep her baby cool and comfortable during hot weather, especially when it's difficult to find shade or control the temperature.

Price: is the Munchkin Pram Fan worth it?

At £20, the Munchkin Pram Fan is in the mid-price range when compared to other pram fans. What Tamsin said really sets this pram fan apart is the range of fan speed settings (for context, the cheaper Dreambaby Pram Fan at £8 has only one speed setting), and the colour-changing lights - a feature we haven't seen on any other pram fan.
