CurrentBody Infrared Sauna Blanket review: "an amazing self-care tool to have at home"

I used the CurrentBody sauna blanket for a month in bed and on the sofa, after workouts and on cold days. It quickly became part of my routine, with a few quirks.

How I tested

I used the CurrentBody sauna blanket over a month in real-life conditions, switching between bed and sofa. I used it after exercise, for period pain, on cold days and as part of an evening wind-down routine; this gave me a clear sense of how easy it is to set up, adjust and store. My wife, who has ME, also used it to help with muscle pain and post-activity recovery, adding a second perspective on comfort and usability.

Compact enough to keep in a corner of my bedroom, I found the CurrentBody Infrared Sauna Blanket easy and convenient to use as part of my routine. If you love a visit to the sauna enough to be considering one at home, a sauna blanket like this one is an excellent option - especially if you don't have the space or budget for a traditional or pop-up sauna.

The sauna blanket can be used on the floor, sofa or in bed, and I mostly used it in bed for a super comfy, cosy wind-down in the evening.

Infrared heat is gentle, comforting and penetrates into your muscles, easing aches and helping you properly relax. After a long walk or an intense yoga session, it really made a difference to recovery, and I noticed an improvement in how my muscles felt the day after I'd used the sauna vs when I didn't.

My wife, who has ME, also tested the sauna blanket, finding it really useful for easing pain and recovering after exertion. The warmth and relaxation go beyond the benefits of a hot bath, without the faff.

The timer and temperature controls mattered more than I expected. Knowing the heat will shut off automatically when time's up lets you switch off mentally. It feels safer, but also just more comfortable. I wasn’t checking the time or wondering if I’d overdone it.

It’s not perfect. The beeping at the end of a session is a bit jarring, especially when you’re listening to a relaxing playlist or guided meditation. And the cable length meant the controls were difficult to reach when the blanket was plugged in at the foot end. But those feel like small irritations rather than dealbreakers.

I also didn't find it made me sweat very much, even at higher temperatures. So I'm sceptical about the claim that you can burn 600 calories in one hour.

Overall this is an amazing self-care tool to have at home. It folds up into an easy-to-store carry bag, doesn't use a ton of electricity and I feel safe and in control while I'm using it.

How do you use the CurrentBody Infrared Sauna Blanket?

Setting up the sauna blanket was really simple. It's ready to use straight out of the box, and there's a towel insert included. The sauna blanket can also be used without the towel insert, just make sure you wear thin, breathable clothes to protect your skin.

Lay the sauna blanket out on a flat, heat-safe surface like a bed, sofa or on the floor. Make sure there's a plug nearby as the sauna blanket plugs into the mains - a bit like a heated throw. There's a power on/off button and up/down buttons for setting temperature and time, and these can be adjusted at any point.

Wriggle into the towel insert, lie down on the blanket and zip it around yourself - the zip is nice and chunky so it's easy to do this on your own. Once you're snug as a bug in a rug, just lie back and relax. I found this sauna blanket comfy to wear with my arms sticking out, so I could scroll on my phone or read a book, but it's definitely worth properly switching off and letting the infrared melt all your troubles away.

I find traditional shared saunas make me light-headed, so it was really nice to enjoy a sauna where I was in control of the temperature (plus, your head is away from the heat source in a sauna blanket). For those who love the heat, this blanket goes up to 75°C.

Is the CurrentBody Infrared Sauna Blanket easy to store?

Mumsnet editor Poppy O'Neill testing the CurrentBody Infrared Sauna Blanket

The sauna blanket packs down more easily than expected. I could get it back into its carry bag without a fight, which isn’t always the case with bulky kit.

Once packed away, it’s compact enough to slide under the bed or sit on top of a wardrobe. It doesn’t need a permanent spot in the room, which helps if you’re short on space.

Is the CurrentBody Infrared Sauna Blanket good value for money?

With an RRP of £550, the CurrentBody Infrared Sauna Blanket is in the middle pricewise, when compared to other sauna blankets on the market right now.

When compared to the pricier HigherDose Infrared Sauna Blanket (RRP £788), the controls on the CurrentBody blanket are actually much better. The timer and exact temperature control made it easier to set and forget, which I found more relaxing than the dial and lack of timer on the HigherDose model. However, the HigherDose sauna blanket has low EMF and layers of clay and crystals that the CurrentBody blanket doesn't.

There are cheaper sauna blanket brands on the market, like MiHigh (currently £140), and you'll get all the same benefits from the infrared heat. The higher price of the CurrentBody sauna blanket gets you a comfortable towel insert and more padding on the blanket itself, more user-friendly controls and a design that's easier to use and maintain.
