Bepanthen Nappy Care Ointment review: a great nappy cream for everyday protection

What Mumsnet users say

Campurp · Recommended product
Bepanthen is fab. Lasts ages and my son has never had a nappy rash. We’ve been using it on him since birth, just a little on every change.

We use Bepanthen, it's brilliant! Not every single nappy change though - I'd say about 9/10 of them.

With a mission to provide the best baby barrier cream, Swiss-made Bepanthen has been a trusted brand for over 70 years and is still going strong.

Bepanthen Nappy Care Ointment is a go-to solution for protecting your baby's delicate skin from nappy rash. What sets it apart is its dual-action formula, which not only soothes irritated skin but also creates a protective barrier against further irritation.

It contains gentle ingredients like pro-vitamin B5 (dexpanthenol) to support natural skin recovery and what's great about this nappy rash cream is that it's easy to rub on, absorbs quickly and spreads out smoothly on my daughter's skin, ensuring she stays comfortable between nappy changes. Plus, it washes off my hands easily after applying it, making it convenient for everyday use.

I also like that it’s suitable for sensitive skin and is free from fragrances, preservatives and colours, so it can be used daily and is suitable for newborns too.

How we tested Bepanthen Nappy Care Ointment

I used Bepanthen Nappy Care Ointment for around six months when my now 22-month-old was born. It was used as a preventative cream to guard against nappy rash, alongside more fast-acting creams including Sudocrem and Metanium. It’s specially formulated for sensitive skin, so is ideal for newborns.

During use, I scored this cream on three different criteria including: ease of use, effectiveness and value for money.

How easy is Bepanthen Nappy Care Ointment to use?

Bepanthen Nappy Care Ointment is a more breathable nappy rash cream than the likes of Sudocrem and Metanium, so I used it as an everyday barrier cream and applied it after every nappy change.

It’s easier to apply than both Sudocrem and Metanium as it’s smoother in texture and less thick, which makes it better to use day-to-day.

In the early months, I always carried it in my changing bag and found that a little goes a long way. One tube of Bepanthen Nappy Care Ointment lasted a couple of months when used alongside other creams.

How effective is Bepanthen Nappy Care Ointment?

As a preventative, Bepanthen Nappy Care Ointment is a very effective nappy cream. However, I’ve found both Sudocrem and Metanium to be more effective at getting rid of severe nappy rash.

As such, I’ve found it best to have both Bepanthen Nappy Care Ointment and a back-up nappy rash cream like Sudocrem or Metanium on hand at all times.

Is Bepanthen Nappy Care Ointment good value for money?

Yes. You can buy Bepanthen Nappy Care Ointment in either a 30g or 100g tube depending on your needs. The smaller tube retails at around £4 while the larger can be bought for around £8.

It’s cheaper than the 30g Metanium nappy rash cream, but more expensive per gram than Sudocrem, so I would always choose the latter. That said, it’s a very comfortable nappy cream to use, especially with a newborn, which is why I still think it offers great value for money.
