‘Woman’ missing in Southampton

Now I hope that this person is found safe and well - but this is not a woman! Why is Samantha being described as a woman? This helps no one, neither the person who is missing nor those searching for him.

There's a picture - it won't hamper it at all. And calling her a 'bloke in a dress' is being judgmental. If you wish to that awful - just own it.

The person saying he is probably wearing 'trad female clothes' is a TRA.

So maybe have a pop at them?

BackToLurk · 14/10/2026 12:47

I thought it must be time to be scolded. Like clockwork.

Deadringer · 14/10/2026 12:48

Remember the one a few years ago, police appealing for information regarding missing woman, who sometimes dresses as a man, with a cctv picture of a very obvious man.
I hope this person turns up safe and sound.

The problem with labelling Samantha a woman is that people will be looking for a woman when Samantha is clearly not one. It’s misleading and unhelpful. Agree that 38 is an unlikely too.

Or perhaps they'll be looking for the person identified in the picture? Generally that's how it goes when someone is missing. Or do you think people ignore the picture and start looking for any woman?

AccidentallyWesAnderson · 14/10/2026 12:49

Quite.

Calling him a bloke in a dress isn’t ’being judgmental’, it’s just stating facts. He is a bloke, wearing a dress. If facts offend you then that’s a you problem.

Maddy70 · 14/10/2026 13:31

I would assume that the police have more knowledge about the situation and perhaps this person is very vulnerable. Maybe by describing him as a woman will calm his brain. The important thing is he is found safely not how he is described so I'm all for anything that will bring them back safely

HannahinHampshire · 14/10/2026 13:33

From NoLongerTheFuzz on Twitter - perfect post.

“I am a retired police officer who dealt with mispers. Accurate descriptions save lives. Preferred pronouns don’t. When did ideology come before saving life and limb? Missing in Southampton: man who identifies as a woman, wears women’s clothes, 6ft, large build, short blonde hair (shaved one side). Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary are describing him as a “woman.” Sex matters. Ref tel:44260500075 44260500075.”

There are some odd factors apart from 'Samantha' himself of course. I don't think it's usual for the police to get involved so early in a missing person case unless the individual is particularly vulnerable. Which he may well be.

Not so. People can go missing in minutes. Especially vulnerable people (albeit more likely to be urgent in the case of a young child or very elderly person obv ).

Because she's a trans woman, will likely be wearing trad 'female' clothing and answers to that name.

Because she's clearly vulnerable and disrespecting her is going to add to her distress.

Have you stopped to think about the damage this may do to her mental health? Being judgemental about her appearance is likely to cause her a lot of pain.

She has done absolutely nothing to deserve all this malicious attention.

Spare me the fake concern, this is point-and-laugh bullying disguised as caring. She doesn't deserve this and neither do her family. No wonder so many trans people are driven to suicide and targeted for violence.

Edited

Spare me the emotional blackmail and cry bullying, you're shamelessly exploiting the situation to pontificate, yet again, on your hobbyhorse. It's your concern that's fake, you're using it as a cover to spread hate and justify criminal behaviour.

Other posters have raised legitimate concerns about this man being called a women, if the police are asking the public to help them find him, they should make it clear they're looking for a him. The fact that you can't recognise that as genuine concern is because you're not capable of such an emotion.

Funny how the mental health of women is never taken into account when men want to use their showers and changing facilities.
Or wish to be placed in the female part of the prison estate.
Or... (it's a long list)

I hope this person is found safe and well, and gets the care he needs.

Those two things - not wanting men in women's spaces, and wanting a missing person to turn up - are not mutually exclusive.

This is a missing person. She is described as a woman - and there's a picture. It doesn't matter for crying out loud. This is as bad as those who decided to harass an account for featuring a trans woman who had been murdered because she 'wasn't a woman'. Only she wasn't trans - she just didn't perform femininity enough for the rabid transphobes. The only thing that matters here is that this trans woman is found - not you lot policing language to hamper that.

It's a counterfactual narrative, who knows if this person had not been fed lies, he wouldn't be under the mistaken impression he was a woman and if his real mental health issues had been addressed he might not be missing now.

It must be awful to go through life in a way that leads you to think like this.

DramaAndBullshit · 14/10/2026 19:19

Hopefully Sam will turn up and get the mental health support he so clearly needs.

Translation - I don't have a good comeback, it must be exhausting to deflect this hard when you disagree with someone.

NebulousSupportPostcard · 14/10/2026 20:14

The whole appeal is odd. 3 days isn't a long time for an adult to go off by themselves, and the police appeals don't seem to say anything about vulnerability, though that obviously may be the case. Also no mention of family or friends worried for them, or very much information about where they may be/what they may be doing.

I agree that it is unhelpful and counterproductive to call a man a woman, when the pictures leave no doubt at all. It just seems very odd to make a police appeal that offers little clarity, and potentially makes the person missing vulnerable to even more distress caused by all the online discussion that it prompts.

CrossPurposes · 14/10/2026 22:41

Two things.

What is wrong with calling yourself a transwoman if that is how you identify? What is wrong with owning that fact instead of the pretence that you are a woman?

Then we get this ridiculous situation describing an obvious male as a woman when the use of the word transwoman would say it all.

Internalised transphobia. It’s rife.

Lougle · 14/10/2026 23:44

The appeal has changed to missing adult on Facebook. I can see why they have used woman, but it really isn't helpful. I hope Samantha is found safe and well.

NotBadConsidering · 15/10/2026 00:52

Most missing person news I hear about is on my local radio station as I am driving to and from work. If the description of a missing person doesn’t work for radio, it doesn’t work at all.

Skivijimmy · 15/10/2026 14:46

Where's the missing woman's pictures? 😆

StSpiridian · 15/10/2026 15:09

borntobequiet · 14/10/2026 07:34

Do missing persons notices usually advise the public to call 999 if they think they’ve seen them?

Where a missing person has severe MH issues eg may harm themselves or is a danger to others anyone who spots them are told to ring 999 . So that may be the case here.

It helps no one, including the missing person to call him a woman. 'Person' is too vague, man or 'man who Ids as a woman, wearing....'- is more accurate and helpful. They need to find him, not virtue signal. His safety is more important. And yes, descriptions need to work on radio too.
