‘Woman’ missing in Southampton

Now I hope that this person is found safe and well - but this is not a woman! Why is Samantha being described as a woman? This helps no one, neither the person who is missing nor those searching for him.

No reason whatsoever not to describe Samantha as a missing ‘person’ here, is there? Am not convinced about the 38 part either…

Heggettypeg · 14/10/2026 02:34

I hope Samantha turns up safe and well.

Do missing persons notices usually advise the public to call 999 if they think they’ve seen them?

Not really. It’s usually the non emergency line I think. Unless the person is in danger at the time.

Rightsraptor · 14/10/2026 07:56

There are some odd factors apart from 'Samantha' himself of course. I don't think it's usual for the police to get involved so early in a missing person case unless the individual is particularly vulnerable. Which he may well be.

It’s hard to see why they didn’t use person. This sort of police notice reminds me of those Daily Mail stories where they share a series of unflattering photos of a celebrity with the headline “Doris Flaunts Her Curves on the Beach” designed to generate a load of “Doris needs to lay off the pies” comments.

Igmum · 14/10/2026 07:59

Agree. Missing person or missing transwoman but saying woman makes the press release pretty useless.

GreyskySexRealistsky · 14/10/2026 08:02

There was a case mentioned on here a while back where the description was "person"... so police were advising the public to look out for "a person". It was so vague and unhelpful!
Seriously, what's the priority here?

Lifewasapillow · 14/10/2026 08:02

I saw this last night and wanted to be brave and point out it would help if they said Samantha was a man. But Hants Constabulary have turned off commenting. Helpful.

hattie43 · 14/10/2026 08:03

They turned off comments . It’s dangerous insisting she be called a woman because people can clearly see a man so may not realise it’s the missing person .

Dandeloosha · 14/10/2026 08:06

The problem with labelling Samantha a woman is that people will be looking for a woman when Samantha is clearly not one. It’s misleading and unhelpful. Agree that 38 is an unlikely too.

Honestly, in this case I’m not sure how much that’s even necessary. There’s a photo. Say ‘person’.

If its a child yes . Bloke in a dress, not so sure

averylongtimeago · 14/10/2026 08:30

Samantha is obviously male- a trans woman. It isn’t helping finding them by not saying this. I hope Samantha is found- they have a family and friends who must be very worried.

the comments on that facebook post by the police were not helpful, so no wonder they were turned off.

I would guess Samantha is a vulnerable adult, and the photo is the important part anyway

fanOfBen · 14/10/2026 09:39

New image makes me wonder whether there's a possibility he's run away to detransition... Or, possibly the police are not looking for him just with his own interests in mind?

That’s one possibility.

lcakethereforeIam · 14/10/2026 11:46

Worrying if he was last seen on the embankment.

Fingers crossed for him. At least the Police nonsense means it's getting more publicity than your normal missing person.

TransParentlyAnnoyed · 14/10/2026 12:19

Because she's a trans woman, will likely be wearing trad 'female' clothing and answers to that name.

Because she's clearly vulnerable and disrespecting her is going to add to her distress.

Have you stopped to think about the damage this may do to her mental health? Being judgemental about her appearance is likely to cause her a lot of pain.

She has done absolutely nothing to deserve all this malicious attention.

Spare me the fake concern, this is point-and-laugh bullying disguised as caring. She doesn't deserve this and neither do her family. No wonder so many trans people are driven to suicide and targeted for violence.

lcakethereforeIam · 14/10/2026 12:31

Perhaps because some so called allies see everything as transphobia? Dress the slightest digression and even genuine concerns as hatred. It seems it's most often allies telling people with trans identities that the world hates them and wants them to die.

HannahinHampshire · 14/10/2026 12:39

Nobody is being judgemental about Samantha’s appearance - certainly not on this thread. Describe Samantha as a trans woman or a trans identifying man by all means, but this is not a woman and will hinder the search process. I hope Samantha is found safe and well.

This is a missing person. She is described as a woman - and there's a picture. It doesn't matter for crying out loud. This is as bad as those who decided to harass an account for featuring a trans woman who had been murdered because she 'wasn't a woman'. Only she wasn't trans - she just didn't perform femininity enough for the rabid transphobes. The only thing that matters here is that this trans woman is found - not you lot policing language to hamper that.

There's a picture - it won't hamper it at all. And calling her a 'bloke in a dress' is being judgmental. If you wish to that awful - just own it.
