I wouldn't be so sure Labour will get another term. They've squandered their lead in record time already.

duc748 · 09/02/2025 21:11

Now we're being told Labour can't win the next election - which is unlikely to be before 2029.

Tbf, plenty of people were saying that before the last election; that it'd be a one-term affair for Labour. So that's hardly a new thing.

Hairyesterdaygonetoday · 09/02/2025 21:11

Excellent news. I’ll never regain respect for the Labour Party, but I’m glad they’re finally starting to back away from this shit show.

HPFA · 09/02/2025 21:08

Labour has been shifting its position for about a year before the election. It's not a recent thing.

Some of us on here were saying that the trans issue wouldn't stop Labour winning the election.

Some of us were saying that they wouldn't abandon the new position because of a few daft MPs - some of whom are now Independents.

We were told we just didn't know how ordinary people felt and no way were Labour going to get elected.

Now we're being told Labour can't win the next election - which is unlikely to be before 2029.

Do people ever think about their previous failed predictions before making new ones?

MrsOvertonsWindow · 09/02/2025 21:05

Good. It's another brick being removed from this monstrous edifice. Eventually wobbly Starmer will be asked about whether men should be in changing rooms, showers etc with girls and women.
We'll have to see what new responses his handlers have taught him after his "don't mention cervixes and this is the most vulnerable group evah"... attracted such well deserved ridicule.

DuesToTheDirt · 09/02/2025 20:39

If we look at the case of Sandie Peggie and Dr Upton, it seems impossible for him to have a GRC (this hasn't been publicly stated one way or the other, but people have been looking at how/whether/when he could have got one and concluded that he couldn't). And yet he self-ID'd into the changing rooms and NHS Fife has been prepared to go to tribunal over it.

Self-ID is already here and allowed by institutions that should know better.

This is my question too

What's to stop this happening atm?

If a man uses a CR can a woman be suspended for saying no?

zanahoria · 09/02/2025 21:02

Starmer just goes with the flow on this issue, he has already changed tack a few times. The important thing is to keep up the pressure on him.

LoobiJee · 09/02/2025 20:46

Floisme · 09/02/2025 19:48

I'd have preferred it if the article had quoted some names rather than anonymous 'multiple sources' and 'insiders'. But I assume The Times wouldn't publish unless they were confident it was correct.

Maybe Labour, unlike the Democrats, can still remember how to read a room.

Edited

It does say a government source at the end.

A government source said: “If we’re going to push back against Reform this is the kind of thing we need to be doing rather than reforms to the Gender Recognition Act which would be catnip for Farage.”

RayonSunrise · 09/02/2025 20:43

Starmer has been rolling back the Corbyn years for some time now, but he's having to take his whole party with him. (Something similar was happening with the Tories when Maria Miller was the minister insisting that TWAW.)

I think British women have done a great job of grassroots organising and getting this stuff rolled back without waiting for a political party to swoop in and save us. The TRAs thought they could capture organisations and sneak this in as a fait accompli, but we've collectively fought back and done it with dignity.

GO US. Now let's carry on rallying around Sandy Peggy and the Darlington nurses. The term we used to use was "Puuulllllll."

IwantToRetire · 09/02/2025 20:42

Self-ID is already here and allowed by institutions that should know better.

Exactly and that is why so many SEENs have been set up. And its not just the NHS is Scotland where just about everybody and everything seems to have been rainbowed.

The next fight is in fact challenging all those institutions, media outlets, etc., who smallowed the Stonewall lies.

With or without a result from the FWS court case, this has to happen as too many women and children are suffering because so many institutions swallowed the lie and sold women out.

LoobiJee · 09/02/2025 20:40

@duc748

Yes. Exactly that.

“A third source referenced the fronts on which the government is already defending its position, such as winter fuel payments, the economy and inheritance tax, and said: “Why would we open that particular can of worms for ourselves at this particular moment?” “

“Ministers also intended to drop the requirement that people live as their preferred gender for two years before obtaining a certificate. Doing so would have meant amending the Gender Recognition Act, and there is little appetite within the party to reopen that debate in public.”

DuesToTheDirt · 09/02/2025 20:39

illinivich · 09/02/2025 20:33

If the government couldnt get self id implemented in 2017, theres no hope now, regardless of the party in charge. It had to be completed before people understood the process and implications - in 2017 newspapers were claiming GRA required invasive surgery and no safeguarding risk - thats harder to claim now.

So in reality, labour has quietly shelved a policy that was never going to work. Starmer will never want to repeal the GRA because he believes in gender ideology. What they will have to do instead is respond to court cases and safeguarding fails.

It would be great to get a clear statement about what exactly is female/women only spaces. We need the government to say that organisations cannot work within their own definitions of woman and female. But i think we are further away from that than we have ever been.

Chersfrozenface · 09/02/2025 20:20

The last paragraph in Sonia Sodha's opinion piece in the Observer today - my bolding:

"There is a cautionary tale from across the Atlantic, where Democrats’ stubborn and unpopular defence of men’s rights to self-identify into women’s sport has dropped the unlikeliest of moral victories into President Donald Trump’s lap, allowing a man accused of serious sexual assault to somehow position himself as a defender of women’s rights. Abandoning basic common sense for unpopular policies that put women at risk does not go well for the left."

Is the penny starting to drop with others in the Labour party?

(Sonia Sodha was a senior adviser to Ed Miliband when he was Leader of the Opposition, remember.)

eatfigs · 09/02/2025 20:03

Sounds like it's a mix of this not being palatable to the electorate any more, and Labour having enough of a majority to ignore the transactivist MPs who might want to push this.

EasternStandard · 09/02/2025 20:00

@IwantToRetire agree with everything in your post

Labour are really struggling, they can't get a hold of the economic downward trajectory they've caused

They won't be able to deal with trafficking as promised

The polls go down each week

This stuff is way too hard to deal with

Toseland · 09/02/2025 20:00

"Why would we open that particular can of worms for ourselves at this particular moment?”
The can has been open for years - why haven't you addressed it before?!

IwantToRetire · 09/02/2025 19:59

Now we can push for clarification of 'Sex'.

This may be the other reason. If they suspect that the FWR Scotland JR is in fact going to come down in favour of clarifying the word sex in the EA.

Although even if Labour says they will do it, I suspect that some Labour MPs will put up a good fight to stop an ammended EA going through the House of Commons.

Does anyone know how long it is now until the Judges give their verdict?

IwantToRetire · 09/02/2025 19:56

I would see this as I think as what is called (I think) a "kite flyer".

And also suspect that it is the Times wanting to really lay it on thick about Reform. Any notional lead that Reform has is about asylum seekers, nothing what so ever to do with self id.

And doubt that many in the UK will have any detailed knowledge of Trump's EO although many have some sympathy re women's sport.

I think Labour is a bit overwhelmed at the moment.

Everything that is meant to be part of their new dawn doesn't seem to work, and they are trudging through treacle to make an impact.

And much as the trans community might hate it, I think that for Labour having a few rainbow flurries about Labour letting them down, will not be half as worrying for them as not being able to persuade the financial market they know what they are doing, and them not being able to stop the small boats.

Will wait to see by the end of the week if this is still in the news.

If it is there might be an interesting fight with the W&EC who will probably get very upset!

Floisme · 09/02/2025 19:48

EasternStandard · 09/02/2025 19:42

@Theeyeballsinthesky do you mean men can longer go into women's CR?

Is there a change in legal status that backs this up?

boobleblingo · 09/02/2025 19:41

boobleblingo · 09/02/2025 19:40

Completely agree that the current system also needs an overall, but just relieved that it's not getting any worse.

And that it is finally being noticed that it is an unpopular political decision.
(Also note to self - use Damascene more regularly in everyday speech)

It needs an overhaul, it's not worried about getting splattered with paint

It's crazy to allow people to change (rather than add to, or amend) birth certificates. And the fact that plenty of countries may have passed laws to allow this doesn't make it any less daft.

Shortshriftandlethal · 09/02/2025 19:37

illinivich · 09/02/2025 19:34

Its all self id already.

There's a two year wait for a change of birth certificate, but all other id can be changed immediately and, as others have pointed out, organisations dont tend to differentiate between trans people with or without a GRC.

The GRC process relies on the diagnosis process being robust. But there's no information about this - how many fail to get a diagnosis, for example.

Im please labour seems to be getting cold feet about modernising the process, but keeping the current system isnt good enough. Jess phillips should understand this as safeguarding lead.

It is going to be step by step and incremental.

Now we can push for clarification of 'Sex'.
