Karla Garcia Gascon has been nominated for Best Actress. Karla is a transwoman. This thread has been taken down twice. Hat trick, anyone?

I had forgotten that bit.

FlirtsWithRhinos · 25/01/2025 10:35

@UrsulasHerbBag but don't you see, this is exactly why male actors are better at playing women than female actors! Male actors have the perspective to cut through all the irrelevent stuff like sexism and domestic load and frustration at being ignored and talked over and the lifetime impact of childbirth and child rearing that female actors always want to bring in to a character. Male actors meanwhile get right to the real core of womanhood: great hair, great rack, a bodycon dress and a head tilt ❤

UrsulasHerbBag · 25/01/2025 10:23

It isn’t right. That’s all there is to it really. When you think of the historic abuses of female actresses over the years and the appalling sexism in the film industry. I remember a time when actresses weren’t taken seriously unless they had filmed violent sexual attacks. The “casting couch”, the “if you do this I’m going to make you a star” ethos. Remember back 60/50 years when those beautiful young starlets were prostituted around the Hollywood execs and friends? That was all still happening under Whine-stein and took some brave women to blow the whistle? So I would like to see this trans woman celebrated as a trans woman with their own personal struggles discussed and not on the back of women.

I didn't see the other threads but I wonder if they were taken down because people weren't being entirely complimentary about this person's appearance ...

Yeah this is the type of post i meant, thats the only thing i can think of on the first thread

Keep up. Only a man can play the part of a man pretending to be a woman to win the best woman category.

Noooooo, that's what happened with Squid Game and it was v transphobic apparently.
It must be a man pretending to be a woman playing a man pretending to be a woman.

FlirtsWithRhinos · 25/01/2025 00:40

It is fascinating to watch how missing threads and missing posts create the opportunity for people to insert their own narrative.

I wish MN would add a little information about why something was deleted to make that harder , for example "this post was not abusive but we do not allow personal comments about specific people" or "this post went beyond robust disagreement to personal attack" or "this post was not especially problematic but it mentioned a known vexatious litigant and we feel better safe than sorry"

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 24/01/2025 23:54

I can’t understand why Jessica Alves has been passed over. Shame on the committee !

The other threads were taken down because of the blatant transphobia.

Blatant transphobia or scientific fact? Humans can't change sex

Enough4me · 24/01/2025 23:45

If the category if for females it should be for females.

Eh? You said earlier that it’s a role no woman could play.
Then you said “she’s a woman so she’s in the actress category, get the fuck over it”.

Which is it?

Are you using woman to mean different things in these sentences?

Keep up. Only a man can play the part of a man pretending to be a woman to win the best woman category.

I'm just loving the idea that Angelina Jolie and Pamela Anderson might be sneaking on to FWR for a bit of female solidarity 😀

I reckon those two definitely know all about the patriarchy in life.

I thought the "spirit of mumsnet" was to be helpful and kind to posters with a problem, and generally supportive to other women (like the ones who have lost the opportunity to be nominated for/win an award because a cheating male has taken the prize instead)

He'll win because he is trans. He would not win if he was a man because he's a mediocre actor.

The academy members are overwhelmingly male so they probably recognised his portrayal as a woman because it conforms with the male ideal of womanhood. So in their heads he's a brilliant woman actress because he behaves like their idea of women.

Fuckers.

Karla got to 52 without having created much of a stir - not exactly a huge star. Parts for older women are few and far between. Karla is doing extremely well all of a sudden.

FlirtsWithRhinos · 24/01/2025 22:02

Well I for one think it's wonderful. As a woman I find it so inspiring to see the success of a person born with male privilege in a patriarchal society, and recognising that type of achievement is what women's awards are all about really, isn't it?

I forward to a resounding win and hope you will all join me in celebrating the absolutely everyday occurance of men being favoured over women.

Emilia will win because the artistic community want to stick it to Trump. It will backfire because the sight of Emilia’ s frame in a ball gown and tearfully weeping about Emilia’s womanhood and how validating this is, will peak millions of people around the globe.

We can but hope, @HermioneWeasley.

Now we know better, we do better. White people used to play black people.

Yes we’re in more enlightened times. Males can win both best actor and actress (note no trans men are going to win anything anytime soon if ever). And in the case of this specific film anyone can be cast as a Mexican (even if Spanish is so obviously a second language) apart from an actual Mexican.

Nikitaspearlearring · 24/01/2025 20:54

Valeriekat · 24/01/2025 20:00

Yes I do think more people will vote for it as a vote against Trump which of course just penalises women again.

I read that as "penisises" women. Er...
Sorry😆

Speak to the academy, I don’t make the rules.

I'm on the phone to them the now

Actress category should be for women not trans women. Ok?
