Karla Garcia Gascon has been nominated for Best Actress. Karla is a transwoman. This thread has been taken down twice. Hat trick, anyone?

Aw, no, I think he is quite honest. I am a mark Kermode fan. I am inclined to think that he thinks he likes it 😉

He is a massive anti trumper though so maybe that's in his subconscious. I think he's quite 'be kind' on the trans rights thing generally though.

MummytoE · 25/01/2025 18:14

I just read that Karla has already one best actress at Cannes film festival and European movie awards. Think they could be in for a shout when the oscars

Mumteedum · 25/01/2025 18:11

Well I beg to differ with Kevin Maher. It was a mediocre performance in a bizarre film of other mediocre performances that thinks it's audacious but is just preposterous and pretentious, with a stinking script and a lack of anything meaningful to say.

I think I'd like to be a film critic.... Or else it's just nice to be blunt about the bullshit in this world somewhere. Thanks MN 👍🏻

Arran2024 · 25/01/2025 17:47

Kevin Maher in the Times said Karla's nomination was "well deserved".

I'm enough of a film nerd to be glad I've seen it despite thinking it was pants. 😁

I'm disappointed though not surprised entirely that Mark Kermode loved it.

Amazed by all the responses here. Also amazed the thread is still up. Wow! Perhaps the bots got bored?
I think the Oscars are way behind the times and the zeitgeist here, anyway. Definitely an anti-Trump stance. Fingers crossed a woman wins Best Actress, rather than someone 'stunning and brave'.

"stunning and brave" that really made me laugh😂. You forgot my personal favourite.."living their truth "

Enough4me · 25/01/2025 14:12

Women's awards should go to women otherwise they're unisex awards.
I think people finally remember there are 2 sexes!

Thank you @Mumteedum for watching it for us. I really didn't fancy it - even less after your review.🙄

If you want to go on about female directors (the first Oscar winner being) Kathryn Bigelow for The Hurt Locker, a film that explores masculinity, in much better depth probably because it's done from an outsider.

Jaye Davidson had no acting experience but for his work in The Crying Game, Davidson was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor (Oscar) and for the BAFTA Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role in 1993.

His appearance and ability to pass was critical for the plot. Miramax apparently didn’t even want people to know if the actor was a man or a woman.

Looking back on people’s reactions it seems a 50-50 split on whether they guessed. The premise that the other character didn’t is therefore believable and carries the film.

There was no suggestion for him to be up for best supporting actress though.

I know the Oscars is very flawed already but I did like to think of the actresses awards as being something where women were uniquely on equal footing with men because men couldn’t be in it. For example, out the 257 individual directors nominated in the history of the award, only 9 have been women and only 3 of the 75 winners have been women. I love the fact that actresses whose profile and wage has been raised by getting awards, are now picking projects with female directors to use their influence (like Nicole Kidman). Stories told by female creatives are important for everyone.

Mumteedum · 25/01/2025 13:32

I just watched this. Weirdly I put it on my watchlist before I knew what it was about exactly as I was curious to see the spectacle.

I'm going to say spoiler alert for those who will watch the film....

It's an absolute mess of a film. The reason this actor should not win is because their performance is not very good frankly. The whole film has a shallow and nonsensical script. There is zero character development. If they think in any way this celebrates trans people, it does the exact opposite but only if you actually think about it beyond the way the utterly narcissistic main character sees things.

In the way we've all read the awful time trans widows have had, this shows up the chaos all around the central character getting what he wants at all costs as a man or trans woman. That his own wife doesn't recognise him seems crazy. She is clearly still a strong, muscular person with a male physique except for the fake boobs and hair and nails and lips.

Some bizarre redemption story that just by means of transitioning, the person literally becomes a better person... only to show the violent monster again when she doesn't get her own way.

It's just terrible. It seems utterly vacuous and shallow. I think they think they've made great art and that anyone is taken in , is the emporers new clothes. To be fair, I don't think any performance in the film is good because I don't think the actors could really get any emotional depth out of it.

I can’t understand why Jessica Alves has been passed over. Shame on the committee !

Well that prompted quite the rabbit hole 😂

Monitors still in bed I should think. I'm sure the Americans will be coming online soon to tell us what bad women we are.

Arran2024 · 25/01/2025 11:31

They are also up for the BAFTA here.

LipstickLil · 25/01/2025 11:28

I bet he'll win too in order to demonstrate how liberal Hollywood is compared to Trump. It's so depressing. But that's liberal America for you.

Demi Moore, who has spent 62 years living
as a biological woman, should win
this award. But I suspect the oscar's will do their
usual political nonsense of virtue signalling
and right now, just after Trump, is the perfect time for them to bang their progressive drums. And what's worse is that the losers in this category will undoubtedly band together to applaud this, to perform their virtue. I really really hope
I'm wrong.

I see nothing progressive in promoting men over women. On a different note - complete side issue - the UK government is cutting back on extending women's health services to prioritise other areas. Only 51% of the population are women (who tend to vote, too), so they don't matter, obv.

Now we know better, we do better. White people used to play black people.

I agree that it's better that natal males play transwomen as it is much more realistic than when natal females play them.

Felicity Huffman played a transwoman in Transameric (was Oscar nominated) and she had to have a lot of prosthetics to give her a masculine face.
Chloe Sevigny played a transgender assassin and again had to masculine her performance and wear prosthetics to give her a penis.

And there have been some ridiculous examples, there was some drama on BBC ("Secretaries" or something?) and the plot twist was that this petite woman (played by a woman) was actually someone's long lost brother.

Basically females lack the masculinity to play transwomen.

Mittens67 · 25/01/2025 11:04

The Oscars are just a very public wank anyway. This latest bollocks allowing a female award to go to a male for political virtue signalling illustrates the nonsense of the whole thing once again, not that any confirmation is needed.

INeedAPensieve · 25/01/2025 10:54

Yep @FlirtsWithRhinos has it right. We are just NOT AS GOOD AS MEN apparently. We are even not as good as men when it comes to being women either. Only a man can show us how to do it properly. These men also have the privilege of doing womanhood without any of the pesky biological issues us sub-human women deal with on a daily basis. It must be great! Because after all we women are really just defined by the pretty dresses we wear, the way we can head tilt, our fishnets, carrying our little lady handbags, squeaking with high pitched feminine voices. That's all we are really. Well, according to our betters anyway; those REAL humans, the ones who always, always know best. We must just smile and nod and reassure them that yes, we don't know any better and defer to them for all. Even when it comes to defining our womanhood. Hey of course we aren't as good as men at knowing what that is.🙃
