Karla Garcia Gascon has been nominated for Best Actress. Karla is a transwoman. This thread has been taken down twice. Hat trick, anyone?

Well personally I'd have had the actress who plays Rita (ep's lawyer) in the best actress category as hers seems to be the linchpin role.

Some anger after comparing their treatment to the Holocaust: https://x.com/juanpabrenis/status/1883725264854897007

Sorry, haven't seen much commentary on this posted in English yet.

English translation of what Gascón said:

"Today someone asked me if I thought that there was an orchestrated smear campaign against my nomination and Emilia Pérez. It’s more than obvious that we have a big problem staking humanity once again.
Beware with glossing over hate speech, that’s how Germany started and we ended up with concentration camps. Beware with laughing the jokes reader who pretend to cut off our rights, beware with buying into the fear. Beware because the ones laughing, are to be the most affected ones tomorrow.
Cause/effect"

That is not how the Holocaust started.

The Nazis were a bunch of racist thugs right from their inception

Exactly. Celebrate their achievements in the correct category. But that's not what they want to do. I genuinely do believe for these men it is about having power over women and deliberately inserting themselves into things for women.

Men who 'become' women don't stop believing that women should defer to them or that men are entitled to what they want.

CatDogGuineaPig · 28/01/2025 13:10

Absolute joke... I stopped listening when they managed to talk about the protests in Iran without mentioning women. They're awful. Maybe it shouldn't but it still surprised me such old fashioned, unashamed sexism still exists. And they're supposed to be progressive.

Do you think I could identify as a starring actress, and demand to be nominated for an Oscar? After all, that's how it works, isn't it?

Mugglewump is technically not wrong to say "She has as much right as anyone to be up for best actress"

If anyone can identify as a woman nowadays, anyone has the right to be nominated as best actress.

What a joke this has all become.

SmudgeHughes · 28/01/2025 10:47

@tiddletoddles and the point of course is that no one minds them acting or getting prizes; they just shouldn’t be given women’s prizes. That means one more women bumped off the podium, as in sports when trans identifying men compete as women.

Women have had to fight so hard for their places at the top table, to have their sports and positions recognised. For those achievements now simply to be taken by biological men is unfair and enraging.

I will be livid if Cynthia Erivo loses out to this pile of shait!
The Mexican and LGB community have panned it!

It is technically right to say that it breaks all the Oscar traditions of nominating categories according to the sex of the actor or actress.

Whilst I thought the film itself was nothing special and the plot is a bit meh, I think it is rare to have the same actor play themselves as a man and a woman and she is convincing. I thought the premise that she could not be herself because of the culture she lived in and therefore had to suffer the heartache of pretending to be a different person was poignant. She has as much right as anyone to be up for best actress.

"She' is not a she nor an actress.

Having been male from conception and remaining male, notwithstanding cosmetic changes - indeed visibly physically male.

But a lot of people will think ‘oh just be kind; what does it matter; they pass ok’. Completely failing to realise that this takes yet another award from a woman.

I think that there are plenty of people who know that this takes another award from a woman, @SmudgeHughes - they just don't care. Women only matter to these people as something they can colonise, replace, silence and erase. The worst part is that some of these people are women themselves.

My brother in law is part of the 'Be Kind' brigade - the last time we saw them, we had quite a heated discussion. He won't even contemplate third spaces - men's, women's AND gender-neutral loos/changing rooms, for example - because this is 'othering' the poor ickle trans women. I bit my tongue and didn't say that I don't give a shit about othering them - because they are 'other'.

FlirtsWithRhinos · 26/01/2025 19:32

Yep. Two prizes. Both go to men. Not exactly smashing the patriachy!

I don't like it at all BUT if this person is legally considered to be a woman then I suppose they have a right to be in the category - they will probably win.
I think its a way of sticking 2 fingers up at Trump more than anything else

It’s a way of sticking two fingers up to women.

Lottapianos · 26/01/2025 16:22

'I'm disappointed though not surprised entirely that Mark Kermode loved it.'

Disappointed but not surprised here too

I tried to watch the film today but gave up about an hour in. Absolute tripe - terrible songs, badly sung, ridiculous story and really quite dull. I thought that Gascon was fine but no revelation. I thought that Zoe Saldana and Selena Gomez were much more impressive

They take threads down if they are anti-trans, I think. Another thread has beaten the dust since this one went up. Not sure why this one is still here!

It's not anti-trans. It's pro-women's rights, which you would think would be the point of MN.

It's really out of order isn't it! People are just pointing out that nominating a biological man for an award designed for actresses is denying an opportunity to a woman, which is completely unfair.
