The overwhelming majority of people in America (and the world) know that there are only two sexes.

They know that people can't change sex.

They don't think men should be in women's prisons, sports or intimate spaces like domestic violence refuges, changing rooms and medical settings.

They are not comfortable with the irreversible damage puberty blockers, cross-sex hormones and "gender-affirming surgeries" done to children and vulnerable adults.

None of this is radical or "right-wing".

It's shocking that normal, sensible, decent politicians have dropped the ball on this, and that it's left to someone as odious as Trump to step up, protect women and gain political capital as a result.

TempestTost · 21/01/2025 17:22

HardenYourHeart · 21/01/2025 13:52

No, if anything, this reinforces and entrenches the believe that gender is a real and tangible thing that can be changed and is even "reversible".

If the loudest voices on this issue do not come from a cause of concern for the well-being of children, as well as an understanding that this is pushed by fetishists, we will lose this fight.

Conservatives (for a lack of a better word) do not operate in the interest of the well-being of children or the safety of women of girls for whom it has now become even harder to get away from predators.

These conservatives want "men to be men" and "women to be women" and what they mean by that is to confine women to the home in service of men. Trump stacked the US Supreme Court with conservative judges, who only qualified if they were anti-choice. While Trump did not directly ban abortion, he did everything else to make sure that women in the US lost their access to abortions.

Anti-choicers do not give a shit about life, children or women. The is evidenced by the fact that while a fetus is apparently of infinite value; women dying in children birth, children dying from poverty and the death-penalty; are perfectly acceptable to these people.

Let's not lose sight of their motives, people! This is not a win. It is a set-back.

What a load of complete horseshit?

You actually believe that people who are conservatives, something like half the US, and the UK for that matter, don't care about kids?

What basis could you possibly have for such a ridiculous idea?

Ritasueandbobtoo9 · 21/01/2025 17:21

I want in UK. Labour need to implement this.

It is your misunderstanding that you are seeing here. Most gender critical feminists, being, well, feminists, are not aligned with Trump other than on this one thing, which I have to say I'm surprised has been done as well as it was and as early as it was. Open your eyes, stop letting your hate for gender critical women blind you, and you will feel much more positive.

This.

What a depressing thread. Our enemy's enemy has landed a knockout blow that will make it easier for us to achieve our ends. We rejoice and we exploit the new situation as far as we can.

Does nobody have any history under their belt? You make useful alliances to achieve your end: Britain allied with the Russians to achieve the defeat of Germany. It didn't mean that Britain became Communist or trusted Stalin or shared any joint venture with Stalin except the defeat of the Nazis.

Plastictrees · 21/01/2025 17:18

Nothing will make me love Trump. He’s a misogynist, racist troglodyte who could not care less about women’s rights. He’s a narcissist and a manipulator, who always has a malevolent agenda.

SlightlyJaded · 21/01/2025 17:16

Trump is an ass
This is a great piece of legislation

I'll take it as a win for now.

We all know Trump's agenda is purely self-serving
We all know that those same US women who just won their biological sex back may still have to fight for autonomy over their own bodies, but a win is a win.

I would fucking LOVE to see that on uk.gov website.

Hermyknee · 21/01/2025 17:09

I was interested in how clear the EO was in its language and definitions. This was obviously not Trump’s work but of a woman.

Starmer today warned there is a new threat of extreme violence by "loners, misfits, young men in their bedroom" accessing material online. I am hoping Starmer wrote this and this is the start of clearer language from him.

CliantheLang · 21/01/2025 17:07

They also apparently haven't noticed he's appointed the first ever female Chief of Staff - one of the most powerful positions in America.

Yes, the 2nd most powerful person is DC isn't President Musk, it's Susie Wiles, Trump's Chief of Staff. That EO - like everything else -.had to go through her.

So can we stop with the "Trump hates women" nonsense?

I grew up in New York City and it was well known that if a woman wanted to work in construction, she had to work for the Trump Organisation - because Trump was the only one who was willing to tell the all-male unions to go fuck themselves.

(I'm not even going to bother with the rape accusations except to say that E. Jean Carroll's story does not align with the facts.)

Here is Lynn Patton's story of what it's like to be a woman working for Trump.

@MrsKeats

They are entirely different issues. they are all issues supported by the right wing MAGA supported though. Along with no abortion rights, criminal convictions for medical staff performing certain birth control procedures.

You can not support a despot just because one of the thousand policies is one you like.

Supporting one thing a despot does is not the same as supporting the despot himself.

Right now, I love Trump.

The cognitive dissonance my brain is experiencing is painful, so very painful. Ma poor wee heid. 😭

But I'll cope.

themostspecialelfintheworkshop · 21/01/2025 16:40

Thing is, I'm sure Trump has some anti-women ideas, Musk and Vance certainly do. However, just making out he's really extreme to the point of almost the Taliban when he employs women and puts them in senior positions in his administration means you lose people. You'll never convince anyone of anything if you lie so baldly at the outset.

Everyone's sick of the obvious lying. Surely Trump's election must have taught people at least this?

Roe vs Wade was always under threat from the start. Many presidents of both sides could have done something about it but chose not to. It's not one side's fault it's a 'both sides' problem.

But I jumped in for once, because I find it so depressing that 'gender-critical' feminists are championing Trump and his politics of hate.

What has TikTok got to do with the price of tomatoes here? In fact, the TikTok thing was a given: it would not surprise me if many of Trump's supporters are TikTok entrepreneurs who stood to lose their livelihood by the ban. That aside, nothing has appeared yet that looks anything like a ban on LGB or women's rights (and remember that abortion rights are the responsibility of states now, so Trump cannot do much about them).

His TikTok ban was also an executive order, which was defeated in court. Do I need to spell out my arguments chapter and verse? Or are you being deliberately obtuse?

Also, you're wrong about abortion. This could be arranged at a federal level. However, so far, neither Democrats nor Republicans are interested in doing that. Furthermore, abortion is a fundamental right of women.

BusyExpert · 21/01/2025 16:35

what complete nonsense. The issue is not the same as it was/is for gay people, no matter how much the radical trans community wants to hijack it to give their cause some kind of legitimacy

TheCatsTongue · 21/01/2025 16:35

The most recent changes to abortion happened under Biden's presidency, he and Harris could've stepped in but they didn't, because they knew they could use the issue against the Republicans in the midterms (which worked).

Please can people stop with the slippery slope argument "this is actually bad for women because of something that may happen in the future". What specifically is wrong with this current Executive Order, not Trump, not Musk, not the future, please tell me what is wrong purely with this order.

Sorry if this has been posted. I just couldn't wade through all the Trump’s a Nazi drivel.

I was hoping a woman had written the order.

The executive order restoring women's rights was written by @MayMailman, former Director of Independent Women's Law Center, now Deputy Assistant to the President.

Oh look - another woman whose professional expertise he seems to value and not wish to send back barefoot to the kitchen! Not surprised it was written by a woman.

You're assuming I'm ignorant about 'gender critical' feminism. I'm not. I've read widely and I disagree with gender critical feminism. However, MN isn't the place to hash out different points of view on this topic, as the feminist threads are mostly an echo chamber.

"I know better than you but I'm not going to bother to say why because it's an echo chamber" has strong "I have much much better arguments than you but they go to a different school so you wouldn't know them" vibes!

The thing is, for someone who claims not to be ignorant about gender critical feminism your earlier post certainly did a good impression of it! Pro tip - if you want to show why someone is wrong, it helps to be accurate about what they actually say and think, otherwise it just makes you look like you don't understand. (Unless of course the aim is not to actually address gender critical beliefs but simply to smear those who hold them. But I'm sure that is not the case here.)

The good thing about FWR is that unlike the actual echo chambers on FB, Bluesky, Reddit, Mastodon and various forums where gender critical comments are deleted and members who make them banned, on FWR opposing views are publicly challenged not simply disappeared.

The best way to break the FWR "echo chamber" is to argue effectively for an opposing position. I would listen and engage in good faith. I genuinely find it very frustrating that the pro gender posters who visit FWR make a worse case for genderism than I could, and I don't even believe in it!

No, LGB issues are entirely separate from TQ+ issues.

This is about recognising reality rather than pandering to individual people's feelings.

And wheeling out the tired old "everything I don't like is just like the Nazis" argument doesn't work anymore. We see through it.

@ClawedButler : This is about recognising reality rather than pandering to individual people's feelings.

Pretty much what Trump supporters said when a Trump-appointed Supreme Court overturned Roe v Wade.

Trump isn't doing anything because he supports women's rights. It's about control.

What will be next freedom to be curtailed?

I know the argument that protecting trans rights can negatively impact women's rights, the same as protecting women's rights can negatively impact an unborn's rights. I think you can either have a permissive society or an intolerant one. I prefer to live in the former. I don't think it's possible to pick one issue out as an exception.

duc748 · 21/01/2025 16:30

Your problems seems to be with Christians (or perhaps, religionists in general), @AcrossthePond55 . Trump, who never sees the inside of a church (and certainly does not comply with any Christian tenets) is no Christian, although many of them support him. Just because women don't want maternity provisions to be removed, why should they refuse a chance to see the back of policies that really do disadvantage women, like those listed in the EO?

themostspecialelfintheworkshop · 21/01/2025 16:30

I fully believe Trump - like the vast majority of people - genuinely thinks it's fucking insane that so called 'liberals' have been trying to force everyone to believe men can become women just because they say so.

And we're supposed to bow down before them rather than notice they're wearing pornified woman face and that it's clearly a sexual fetish that they're trying to impose on unconsenting women and children.

It's anti-woman, anti-child Emperor's new Clothes. At least in the old story of the Emperor he wasn't deliberately flashing.

It's INSANE! This is a return to sanity.

Those trying to make out Trump wants women to go back to the kitchen haven't read the EO - part of why he's done this is to prevent sex discrimination against women which you can't do if 'women' contains men. They also apparently haven't noticed he's appointed the first ever female Chief of Staff - one of the most powerful positions in America.

You'd think by now they'd realise that obvious lies don't work.

AcrossthePond55 · 21/01/2025 16:20

I'm in the US. I think those of you 'celebrating' need to realize that these same people who believe "Male and female created He them" also feel that abortion is a sin and should be banned with no exceptions and criminalized, no one (including women) should be protected from discrimination or have equal rights, and that since a woman's primary role should be in the home there is no need for laws protecting family or maternity leave. Because men don't need those things, women shouldn't have them either. And that removing such protections will 'encourage' trap women in certain social strata in their homes. Women of wealth or who have wealthy husbands will either not need these protections or will (as in the past) be able to circumvent them. But women of low or modest income, and indeed middle class (by US standards, not UK) women are going to suffer if Trump's MAGA agenda comes true. Take a look at Project 2025 and then say a hearty welcome to Gilead.

The abortion debate has been going on for as long as I can remember. Maybe the Democrats should have actually done something about it when they could, if they felt it wasn't literally the only thing they could keep dangling in front of people to keep them on side.

Would you say the same if he abolished gay marriage, brought in gay military bans, banned IVF, etc etc? They're of a piece with this.

You can think what you like about trans issues, a fascist leader making policy to appease right wingers rather than provide for the rights and freedoms of individuals is a bad thing.

It's pandering to the evangelical right and I guarantee you won't like all their views, even if you like this one.

It’s not anything like banning gay marriage. It’s providing rights and freedoms for women and girls to access safe single sex spaces for example, or compete on an equal footing with other women in sport.
