Trump's plans for day one: ending child sexual mutilation and having just male and female genders

He says "genders" but that has to mean "sex". Day one executive orders, apparently:

I've always wondered about that; why is circumcision so popular in the US?
Googling, this gives some answers:

Obviously circumcision doesn't affirm anybody's gender, but some people think of it as sexual mutilation whether carried out on a boy or a girl.

Apparently over 80% of US men are circumcised, so far more than would have been expected if it was a practice condoned simply for religious reasons. There does seem to be a wider cultural acceptance of circumcision than we see in the UK, so I think a general ban would have wider opposition.

I do agree with you though, it is a hideous act.

It's crazy that the Republican Party is now positioning itself as the party to defend women's rights. But here we are.

I'm sure the fervent Democrats will dismiss this as conservative, anti-progressive policies, and will lump it in with policies such as restricting reproductive rights, but as pp said, the more sunlight this gets the better. The Democratic Party can only burrow their heads in the sand for so long. If they want a chance at getting re-elected, they will need to listen to the public on this.

The party to defend womens rights.

Well, some rights. Not all. Not the ones which give women autonomy over their own bodies and reproduction.

It's always better to say sex, if only to avoid some overeducated dweeb telling us about that African language with 16 genders (no, it's noun classes you big pillock), but more important to see what he does.

If Riley Gaines is happy, I'll be happy.

'Dweebs' and 'pillocks' - now there are two insults I'd happily use😂

Two sexes! Two SEXES, you senile orange chimp! Not fucking genders, sexes!

I wouldn't have phrased it the same way - I like chimps, and senility is not an insult😠 but I agree with you that the key point is the number of sexes, which is a scientific fact, and not the number of 'genders', which is such a waffly concept that enumerating them is just an irritating piece of non-science.

nauticant · 20/01/2025 17:53

The point about Trump is what he does, not what he says.

MysticCatLady · 20/01/2025 17:28

He's saying it now. There are only two genders. Male and female.

Does the US have an equivalent to our GRA? If not, does this executive order mean that all trans people in the States will now have to revert to their biological sex on all identity documents, including those who have had full SRS?

Edited

There isn't, and states have their own regimes. There's no federal GRC. How federal and state laws interact is beyond my expertise unfortunately.

The nearest to a national standard is the Supreme Court ruling in Bostock v Clayton County, but there are two interesting things about that: firstly, it was a quite narrow ruling in terms of employment discrimination (you can't fire someone merely for being gay or trans-identified).

The other point is that Gorsuch J's reasoning leaned heavily on sex (in its original meaning), so he was taking aim at discrimination on the basis of homosexuality or transgender status that involved employers treating employees differently on the basis of sex. That might mean in terms of dress codes that you can't fire a man for wearing a skirt; if he's wearing fetish gear to work, that might be a different matter.

The judgment is here; the dissent from Alito J is also worth a read.

Executive orders are a thing that come and go with every president. Biden reversed a lot of Trump's EOs on day one, and I'm sure Trump is about to do the same. To bed down any position you need legislation to pass through Congress, or better yet a SC ruling. In terms of Congress, Nancy Mace seems to have the bit between her teeth.

nauticant · 20/01/2025 17:02

Trump's just been sworn in.

So, let's see those Executive Orders.

duc748 · 20/01/2025 16:46

Must be a lot of Americans out there with 'X' on their passports; will they all need new ones?

(tbc, I wouldn't be opposed to that. Passports (in all countries) should give basic identification data, of which birth name, DOB, and sex are the most obvious)

VonHally · 20/01/2025 16:42

I really hope this happens in a timely manner at least.

I was just musing to myself and wondered in relation to other countries with active GR certificate legislation and/or self identity, what might happen to those who visit the US and it is obvious that they are a man (it's obvious that they ALL are but YKWIM) but the passport says female.

Maybe nothing.

ClosetBasketCase · 20/01/2025 16:09

As much as I despise Trump and the very ground he walks on - I do agree with both of these items. FGM is abhorrant and should have been outlawed world wide along time ago- tradition and religion be damned. And also, as much as I hate to say it - I also partially agree with the other. I'm very much of the "you do you, boo" faction: however, I also firmly believe that if you have a penis, still urinate out of your penis, or have any use of it at all, in any sense, that you do not belong in a womens space!

"The order ends with a sweeping statement about the fundamental issue the White House believes is at stake in this order: ”Men and women are equal but have obvious sexual differences,” it reads. “If federal policies promote such an obvious falsehood that men can become women, the government will forfeit all credibility. The government must maintain a commitment to recognizing biological reality to maintain the trust of the American people.”"
(Emphasis mine)

Democracy defended by the Democrats Republicans 👏

So, no more circumcisions?

In what way does a circumcision affirm anyone's gender. Be serious 🤣

ResisterOfTwaddleRex · 20/01/2025 14:29

Not just the TRAs with a lack of reaction. Think regular posters will get my drift.

Quite so.
It's another version of "If you say something as obviously untrue as men can become women, I won't believe a single word you say about anything else."

Ereshkigalangcleg · 20/01/2025 13:03

It’s such a huge turnaround I’m wondering if the lack of reaction is down to time taken to filter in

I find TRAs and their supporters often take a little while to properly get going. They need to get their lines clear and work themselves up to fever pitch in their own echo chambers first.

EasternStandard · 20/01/2025 13:01

This is a big deal, after all the threads on here

It’s such a huge turnaround I’m wondering if the lack of reaction is down to time taken to filter in

It’s the end of state legislated gender ideology in the US

I really really can't argue with that.

Scary as it may be to say that.
