Andrew Gold interviewed Dr Hakeem at the Battle of Ideas and it’s, as usual with Dr Az, a fascinating interview. Thought I’d post it here for anyone who’s interested in watching:

Could someone link to the book mentioned please?

I've only watched the first 20 minutes or so, but there's something he says at about 14:30 about Jan Morris that I think is way off the mark. He implies that Morris was like the autistic, asexual transsexuals. That's not the impression I got about Morris at all. Morris was a late transitioning heterosexual, married to a woman and had fathered several children. I know which category I think Morris fits into.

I think sometimes women have a better radar for this sort of thing than a male psychiatrist.

I haven't listened to this video yet but I'm looking forward to doing so.

I found his Benjamin Boyce interview and Detran book fantastic but he's clearly got a much deeper understanding of men/boys than women/girls.

I've written on previous threads that his depth on autism and gender identity in boys is really insightful but I find his information on autistic girls lacking. He doesn't join the dots between ROGD in general (he does mention this) and the sensory issues around breast development and periods. Nor how confusing it might be for autistic girls who may be processing their preferences for practical clothing (most often found in the boys' section) whilst also seeing their male friends suddenly go from peers to adolescent boys who enjoy looking at and commenting upon girls' bodies.

Edited to add: although I haven't seen the video yet, I suspect I will agree with your assessment of his Jan Morris conclusions. I realised after posting that this wasn't completely obvious.

Just to add to my earlier comment. I think men like Debbie Hayton and Jan Morris fool a lot of men because their appearance isn't overtly sexual. They don't seem to see behind the not very sexual appearance to what is going on in their minds in presenting as very 'ordinary' women. But Hayton has admitted to being AGP, and there's no reason (in my mind) to think that Morris was any different.

Really interesting watch.

Sounds like a fascinating book, human psychology does interest me, and for many years I could never understand why there were extremely effeminate gay people wishing to transition along with masculine heterosexual men. Blanchard's theory provided the answers.

The more we understand about it, the better, I do wonder whether a lot of AGP males don't understand that it is sexual as TRAs have done a lot of work to make "euphoria boners" not be a thing about arousal (as bizarre as that sounds).

Interesting that transvestism is about power too. Makes me think a lot at that businessman who has a female identity in a whole different light. I thought it was just sexual, but perhaps it's also about his domination over the women in his workplace?

I found the explanation of the difference between male sexual fetishists who cross dress and AGPs interesting, but mostly it made me even more angry, upset, shocked and frustrated that Labour MPs want many of these men to have access to women and girls' when we are undressed/ vulnerable in toilets, changing rooms, abuse support groups etc, instead of just saying 'NO!'.

Yes! As Dr Hakeem frames the issue of concern, society wouldn’t allow men to come to work dressed in gimp outfits or as nudists so why are they allowing men to erotically cross dress in workplaces and in public?

I watched this a few days ago. It is a good watch. I almost wish it had been longer. He makes a distinction between fetishists who cross dress and AGPs.

It's left me with lots of questions. Unlike sex, I think sexuality can be on a spectrum, or rather several spec...tra(?). Is AGP an extreme expression of the cross dressing fetish or is it something completely different?

I'd have loved to have seen a picture of emo Az and Andrew Gold in eyeliner 😁

I read his book last year and found it went into a bit more detail; he agrees with Blanchard that there are different subtypes of AGP. If I’m correct in remembering, Hakeem, in his clinical work, noticed a distinction between the reasons the groups of men are cross dressing. In the patients he treated the transvestites were cross dressing for control-based reasons and because they have strong issues to do with their mother and then some sexual arousal. Whereas for the AGP patients it was being concerned purely with sexual arousal. He also mentions that autistic men were a significant aspect of his patient group and he noticed that they were among the most concerned with pronoun/behaviour policing other people.

Like @FarriersGirl I do recommend the book. It’s written for the layperson and is relatively short so I found it informative and easy to read.

I'd love the word transvestite to come back into everyday usage to allow us distinguish between men who wear women's clothes because they have a fetish, and men who have transitioned fully and believe they are women.

HaddyAbrams · 19/12/2024 16:59

I haven't watched it all, but it's interesting so far. I'll come back to it later

YesterdaysFuture · 19/12/2024 16:48

I believe Blanchard had sub-categories for AGP, such as cross-dressing, behavioural, physical etc.

Really good interview. I have bought the book he refers to "detrans" and have just read the first 8 chapters. It is a good read Smile
