This popped up on my linked in feed - a free advice line which offers legal advice to women suffering sexual harassment in the workplace welcomes applications from transwomen.

That's right women being sexually harassed by men, come and discuss the details of it with men.

For everyone else, the post above was in the spirit of Confused's (very confused) post-modern theories on language. I know they'll appreciate it, but for we lesser uncivilised mortals (where I'm "from", we believe in a common language as a necessary foundation for democracy and the rule of law), what I said (in Cattiett-ish - its first use on a public forum, I'll have you know!), was:

Are you amenable to the possibility that we may need a common language to describe and fight oppression?

And, just to check, I assume then that, given your comically impractical and inconsistent respect for an individual's right to their own language, you've spoken to the women of Afghanistan to ascertain their views on the gender debate and what words we should use for them?

Do you think they'd agree with you calling them women meaning their psychology and way of life, or whatever your earlier words were? Or do you think some of them may find this grossly, traumatically offensive?

Trans women using a phone line? Not something I can get worked up about!

It isn't about them using it, it's about them being the voice that vulnerable women hear when they call.

Exactly. James may like to call himself Jenny, but nothing will mask the deeper voice of a man

Pinkelephant66 · 06/12/2024 21:57

When will this madness end?

This is about them volunteering to be on the phones giving advice. That's how I read it, anyway.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 06/12/2024 21:55

I wouldn't want to talk to male people about being sexually harassed at work, so I wouldn't call if I thought I would get one, or I'd just put the phone down.

vibratosprigato · 06/12/2024 21:52

I can't say I have a problem with this but I appreciate why others do.

Trans women in women's prisons/sports/changing rooms/hostels etc yes I'm on board with their exclusion due to the obvious disadvantage/threat to women's privacy.

In those few minutes, I did come up with some US stats from a source that looks reliable that match yours.

Can you link to the exact stats please so we can all examine them? Self selected surveys aren't particularly"reliable", as TRAs were more than happy to complain about, both when a research paper was published about Rapid Onset Gender Dysphoria, and also when a lesbian activist ran an online survey about lesbians being pressured into sex with MTFs.

Lolaandbehold · 06/12/2024 21:50

Come on people, stop taking the bait of our TRA chums.
Y’all know better than that.

I've spent a few minutes looking up stats, using similar terms to those described. Not long, admittedly.

In those few minutes, I did come up with some US stats from a source that looks reliable that match yours. I've not been able to find any for the UK for that exact claim, though.

What did come up a few results further down in response to the search terms was the following, which may help you to understand why some females* *may want female-only helplines in some situations.

Comparisons of official MOJ statistics from March / April 2019 (most recent official count of transgender prisoners):

125 sex offenders out of 3812 women in prison = 3.3%
13234 sex offenders out of 78781 men in prison = 16.8%
76 sex offenders out of 129 transwomen = 58.9%

*Note: I'd like to use the word "women" in my own comments above, but defer to your sensitivities by accepting the rather dehumanising use of "females" instead. The UK government stats above do use "women" to describe "females".

I guess that the people compiling the stats felt that we do still need a word for adult human females, if information like the below is to be collected, recorded and understood.

woollyhatter · 06/12/2024 21:40

People are asking you endlessly and patiently to properly cite your sources. That means a hyperlink direct to the study you are using to evidence your argument. This is so it can be properly reviewed and discussed it is hardly difficult. It is what people who value facts and logic over feelings prioritise for the sake of the truth.

MrsTerryPratchett · 06/12/2024 21:39

My MENOPAUSE insomnia is the reason I'm here. Pretty sure you can't fake that with feelings.

And then you told us it was US data and there was very little. So cobblers, then.

Decent, peer-reviewed, hopefully meta-data where we can analyse the confounding variables, sample size, quality of the questions, biases of the researchers, and so on... Non-existent.

Sagan, again, extraordinary claims need extraordinary evidence.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 06/12/2024 21:38

Also, I'm confused by "y'all" too, why is the fact this is a parenting site relevant? We all know what being female feels like, and for the majority of women our reproductive organs factor one way or another. Maybe you don't know what it feels like, but there you go.

newtlover · 06/12/2024 21:37

😂😆

Brefugee · 06/12/2024 21:37

we want the sources. If they are robust you will provide them.

Otherwise I'll assume you plucked them from your backside made them up

when you read a police report that says "woman" we cannot be sure if it is a woman or a trans woman because the police are too stupid to realise that keeping good stats is the basis of good policing. So they have given in to your friends at the TRA lobby and don't record sex plus gender id.

So you can give us the links to the reputable, and peer reviewed studies that back up your ridiculous claim, or we will assume you pulled the numbers from somewhere.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 06/12/2024 21:34

@soConfusedByYalliThoughtThisWasaParentingSite

I think the poster was engaging with your analogy about racist attacks, not saying that MTFs generally pass for women. As you correctly acknowledge, they mostly are obvious males.

Catiette · 06/12/2024 21:34

@soConfusedByYalliThoughtThisWasaParentingSite, a few questions.

  1. I believe every oppressed group with a particular set of needs in common has a right to a word that describes them. Without a word of their own, it will be harder for them to argue for their rights. Do you agree? (I'd be surprised if you didn't, as you seem to care about the human rights of distinct groups).

  2. What word do you use to refer to the group of people in Afghanistan who are virtual prisoners in their own homes because of their body-type? (Remember that cis- doesn't work for them, as how a female "identifies" means nothing to the Taliban, and we don't know how every Afghan female "identifies" in any case).

newtlover · 06/12/2024 21:33

this is actually hilarious
I salute your patience and persistence, sisters...actually very revealing to any new-to-all-this lurkers
also of interest, to return to the original point, that the argument for a dedicated helpline staffed by and aimed at transwomen is not worthy of consideration by our visitor, why would that be I wonder?
Of course any privately run organization can (within the law) set up whatever service they like, aim it at whoever they like and staff it how they want.
But if they want to provide a service for women, and prioritise women's interests, they ought surely to consider what would be most likely to make most women feel safe and comfortable.
