Gender critical lesbian "forced" to leave lesbian bar after being accused of a "hate crime"

Jenny Watson, 32, says she was accused of ‘hate crime’ in the traumatic incident, and claims bouncers removed her with such force that she was left with bruised wrists.

Although she had no interactions with anyone but her friends at the She bar in Soho last month, she believes a transgender customer recognised her from social media and urged staff to kick her out.

Ms Watson says staff told her she had ‘committed a hate crime’ without specifying what, adding: ‘I suspect this trans-identifying man went to staff because he recognised me, then they made this decision because of what he said. The ejection was clearly motivated by my beliefs.’

Ms Watson, a town planner, is now considering whether to take legal action, as it is unlawful to discriminate over gender-critical opinions.

I'm a lesbian. I know people who know Jenny Watson very well, one who worked with her. I will not be contributing to a crowdfunder and nor will a great many lesbians who are acquainted with her. I've never known a woman attract so much trouble and get so much publicity and support, some of it financial, as a result.

Would you care to say a bit more for those of us who are less connected?

Doesn't mean you can use said belief to cause trouble at a bar or anywhere else for that matter.

It wasn't long ago a man with such beliefs put joke-pronouns as his email signature in his Council job in some sort of "protest" and refused to remove them. The outcome of that was he was fired, he then took the Council to court and lost and had to pay a big fine.

Several pp’s have asked how she was causing trouble. Do you really think that women with ‘problematic views’ shouldn’t be allowed to go out for a drink @Christinapple because that would be ‘causing trouble’?
You might think that’s a reasonable view, but I’m sure other readers can see the misogyny

If someone is going to stand up against the TRA monolith, you kind of need that person to be capable of attracting attention, garnering publicity and raising money, though.

This isn't about whether she's a saint, or is able to ingratiate herself with people.

This is about someone having a quiet drink with friends, and because someone else there doesn't like her gender critical views, got her thrown out of the bar.

There is a huge difference between some trouble maker going round picking fights, and someone being persecuted because people dont like their politics.

She isn't attracting trouble.

The problem is the TRAs and all those who stand by and do nothing, who spend their whole life trying to undermine women who are prepared to stand up for women's rights.

I suppose you think Maya Forstater was attracting trouble, and no doubt Roz Adams too.

You really a piece of work. Do tell us exactly how she was causing trouble.....

Yes, I'd also like to know how she was causing trouble. According to the report, she didn't even speak to anyone else there.
How do you 'cause trouble' by quietly having a drink with friends and not engaging with anyone else?
She was only kicked out because someone recognised her as being openly lesbian on social media, not because she did anything at the bar.

You're shading into the Constable Savage sketch from Not the Nine O'Clock News.

I read that case and the situation is entirely different.

And there doesn't seem to be any evidence this woman was causing trouble. Someone just objected to her known beliefs due to recognising her from social media. Is that OK? Doesn't sound it to me.

Gender critical belief is a protected characteristic.

Yep.

The police wouldn't give a shit because discrimination under the Equality Act 2010 is a civil matter, not a criminal one.

What do you think the police would have said if they'd ejected her for her known public adherence to some other belief system (say, she was a Muslim convert)?

I wish she would sue, but I suppose she has better things to do with her time.

For anyone who doesn't know, her beliefs are as mild as milk and totally Grainger compliant. She's fine with trans-inclusive lesbian bars. She just thinks lesbians should also be allowed to have at least one bar that's for females only.

It has held up in court, several times now that yes, gender critical beliefs are protected under "belief and religion".

I'm not sure what is hard to understand about that.

The police not giving a shit is absolutely nothing new.

‘And fifty years on, the oppressor is still a white male ...’

TBF , the skin colour of the male is pretty irrelevant here. Plenty of this sort of thing across the racial spectrum…..

YellowAsteroid · 18/11/2024 14:13

I must say I was sympathetic to transgender people (because I would not want anyone to be discriminated against) but this type of nonsense has made me hardened my views on the issue.

Yes @Startingagainandagain I'm the same. I find I have a knee jerk reaction of suspicion to people claiming trans identities now. I don't like this about myself, and I have to remind myself to live and let live, but this is the what transactivist batshittery has done. It's an own goal for ordinary transpeople.

YellowAsteroid · 18/11/2024 14:10

possibly asked to leave with the oppressor generally being a white male and the victim being lesbian and female.

And fifty years on, the oppressor is still a white male ...

Yes, gender critical beliefs are protected but sexual orientation is also a protected characteristic.
She's a lesbian being discriminated against for being openly lesbian by publicly refusing to include men in her dating life. That's why she is 'familiar' on social media and why she was recognised. I think this is just good old fashioned homophobia.
If she does sue, I'd hope that this would be the reason. I'd very much like to see the right of lesbians to be openly lesbian set into case law too.

Edited

Same.

She was discriminated against for her gender critical views. Which include the fact that homosexuality is based on sex.

It's absolutely fucking batshit that lesbians had to set up their own bars in order to meet other women, and exclude men. And now those exact same men have forced their way in and are exercising their sexism and homophobia all over again.

I would absolutely contribute towards setting up a female only bar. Again.

I think you need to get up to speed on this issue especially if you’re going to post on this board!

In fairness, sadmillenial immediately posted 'I stand corrected'.

Just to clarify, from a legal perspective
of course there is absolutely no excuse to be unduly forceful, and if she was hurt then that's awful and she should absolutely take this further against the bouncer
But legally, pubs can refuse entry and remove people for any reason that isnt protected by the equality act (ie not a protected characteristic)
the article also says that police noted no unlawful activity from the pub in ejecting her

I think you need to get up to speed on this issue especially if you’re going to post on this board!

maltravers · 18/11/2024 10:49

Yay, inclusion (but not for lesbians who don’t do d@ck), what are they doing in a lesbian bar! Yay, Diversity (but not diversity of thought obv., no wrong think here)!

HaveYouActuallyDoneAnyWashingThisWeekMum · 18/11/2024 10:39

Dear God this woman hadn’t actually done anything wrong but someone in the bar disliked her and got bar staff to manhandle her out??

So much for tolerance and pretty rainbows 🌈 🤮

I'd be happy to contribute to a fundraiser. These fuckers need putting back in their box.

Judging by last year's contretemps and this one, she might launch a fundraiser for her own bar/dating app (mentioned in story).

But she argues that as a growing number of males identify as female and lesbian, there is a need to protect single-sex spaces. She plans to launch her own bar and dating app for biologically female lesbians only.
‘Lesbians are under attack, not by the outside world, but by the LGBTQ+ movement. If a man can dictate who gets to stay in a lesbian bar, then lesbian spaces are no longer safe for lesbians. This has to change.’
A spokeswoman for the bar said She had been ‘a safe and welcoming environment for the LGBTQ+ community’ for more than 20 years, and that police had attended and ‘dismissed any claims of unlawful ejection’.
Ms Watson was involved in a transphobia row last year when she said only ‘adult human females’ could join her lesbian speed-dating events.

OldCrone · 18/11/2024 08:52

Jenny has commented on the DM article saying that 2/3 of the bar staff were also men pretending to be women. She said she was going to tweet some more details about the incident. Has anyone seen her tweets?

50 years ago an openly lesbian woman in a bar would have faced discrimination and possibly asked to leave with the oppressor generally being a white male and the victim being lesbian and female.

Today with the white male now identifying as a woman they have become the victims and the oppressor has become the lesbian woman.

In the Victimhood Pyramid, trans rights trumps lesbian rights.

Or to put it another way...

... Today an openly lesbian woman in a bar faces discrimination and is asked to leave with the oppressor generally being a white male.

The only difference is, instead of punishing women who won't fuck him because he's a man, he punishes women who won't fuck him while pretending he's a woman.
