Gender critical lesbian "forced" to leave lesbian bar after being accused of a "hate crime"

Jenny Watson, 32, says she was accused of ‘hate crime’ in the traumatic incident, and claims bouncers removed her with such force that she was left with bruised wrists.

Although she had no interactions with anyone but her friends at the She bar in Soho last month, she believes a transgender customer recognised her from social media and urged staff to kick her out.

Ms Watson says staff told her she had ‘committed a hate crime’ without specifying what, adding: ‘I suspect this trans-identifying man went to staff because he recognised me, then they made this decision because of what he said. The ejection was clearly motivated by my beliefs.’

Ms Watson, a town planner, is now considering whether to take legal action, as it is unlawful to discriminate over gender-critical opinions.

I could say a fair bit — and those who went to Filia in Glasgow last year may remember the Jenny Watson incident there. All I can say is that a number of high profile lesbians who initially welcomed Jenny to the London community have stepped away, and that Jenny has fairly recently launched a dating app which she's publicising.

I'm not for a moment supporting a so-called lesbian space that allows males who self-identify as lesbians, or their 'allies' in their premises. I'd suggest waiting for the CCTV footage that Jenny has promised before taking any kind of action.

I seriously think you are shit stirring.

First of all she isn't asking for money.

Second of all you seem to think using FiLia as somehow granting credibility is plausible. Given the incident when they used male security staff to manhandle a woman out of the building, because the FiLia lesbian security didn't like her "attitude" it is beginning to look like the problem of this gossip is the fan girl feminists of FiLia.

Seriously. She could be a complete shit. She could be nor very socially skilled.

But your vindicitiveness is extraordinary.

She is a woman who has expressed gender critical views.

She is a woman who has provided a meetup service for lesbians to meet other lesbians ie biological women who are attracted to other biological women.

When commercial bars tried to stop her using their venues, not because she or the lesbians caused trouble but because TRAs caused a media pile on, she launched a campaign to start a lesbian (as above) bar.

All of which has meant she has been the target of TRAs.

Nobody gives a shit what "high profile lesbians" (if there is a such a thing) think, and it sounds far more likely that lesbians rather prefer not being looked down on by "high profile lesbians" than someone who just wants to provide a safe space - which surprisingly will need paying for.

Based on this type "validation" of events, I think I'll start a thread about how FiLia is nothing but a front for grifters, whose fanzine feminism is destroying the reality of women's liberation to give them acess to "high profile" women so they can rub shoulders with them - and get lots of photo ops. Funded by women who are happy to fork out money to be spoon fed someone else's politics.

Why do you think I was replying to you and not readers in general?

I don't think readers in general are all rushing to put their hands in their pockets either.
And you quoted me in your response.

MarkWithaC · 19/11/2024 11:57

And I repeat my earlier statement that I have not talked about putting my hands in my pockets.
Your comments continue to sound like innuendo to me. I eagerly await more details from official sources on the truth about this incident and about JW more broadly.

If you follow certain people on Twitter/X you'll see there's an ongoing row amongst various online lesbians and other women's coalitions around Ms Watson. For some reason, a couple of years ago, she was called a 'grifter' - I think it was about raising money for a sex-realist lesbian bar. I suspect that some feel their contributions/investments went astray, or that Ms Watson was not held accountable in an appropriate way.

I don't know the rights & wrongs - I suspect it's various shades of right & wrong all muddled up. I also suspect there are personal animosities and interpersonal fall outs.

That still doesn't cancel out the injustice of turfing someone out of a bar because they might be thinking terfy thoughts ... the article says that a transactivist recognised Ms Watson and immediately complained. It doesn't sound as though Ms Watson was doing anything other than having a social drink.

why would she avoid giving her own take on them?

Because I know a bit about Jenny Watson. I know people who've known her in Northern Ireland and now here in London and Wales.

For clarity, I don't doubt something happened at SHE, just as something happened in Glasgow. But you probably have to know a bit about JW and whatever project she's publicising at any particular time to appreciate the value to her of publicity and sympathy.

I repeat my suggestion that you wait for the CCTV footage JW promised before putting your hands in your pockets. I'm sad to have to say this of a fellow lesbian. In my opinion comparing people like Julia Long and Maya — women of real integrity — to JW is deeply insulting.

Was this it?

strathclydetelegraph.com/2023/11/22/glasgow-locals-protest-terf-organization-filia-a-war-of-generations-inclusion-and-childhood-authors/

[He] recognizes another woman across Argyle Street. “She was at my bar last night. She got kicked out for being transphobic,” he tells me.
During his drag act, the woman, Jenny Watson, began filming him when he discussed the ... protest. This escalated when audience members recognized her from social media as an outspoken “TERF” ..... She was then kicked out of the bar due to the commotion.

Filming or recording can get you kicked out. But this does sound as if she was ejected for 'existing whilst TERF'.

Doesn't mean you can use said belief to cause trouble at a bar or anywhere else for that matter.

You're shading into the Constable Savage sketch from Not the Nine O'Clock News.

Love this reference and very apt

This was Pluvia's advice upthread. It seems sensible and aligned to, 'Trust but verify' which is decent guidance in most circumstances.

illtemperedqueen - what was the 'jenny watson incident'?

As for Glasgow FiLIA, there's a reasonable amount of material available through search engines that will return several perspectives.

On its own it's not bad advice, but overall Pluvia's contributions are more like innuendo than anything else. If things are in the public sphere then sure, people can google them, but why would she avoid giving her own take on them?

@theilltemperedqueenofspacetime

"What do you think the police would have said if they'd ejected her for her known public adherence to some other belief system (say, she was a Muslim convert)?"

Nothing. Because religious discrimination is not a criminal matter in the UK, it is a civil one.

It wasn't a rhetorical question: I really would like to know how the police would deal with a venue excluding Muslims. Would they go out of their way to reassure the proprietor they had done nothing wrong, or might they gently remind them that they are opening themselves to a civil claim?

Several PPs have suggested that Watson was causing trouble, though, which would make my question moot.

I didn't say I wanted to give her money.
You've made somewhat allusive comments so far, and I and others would like a bit of detail. That's all.

TempestTost · 19/11/2024 10:32

It can be hard to give detail about this kind of personal thing online without being outing and inappropriate.

A Google suggests Watson was kicked out of a bar at filia for being a lesbian as well and was interviewed.

theilltemperedqueenofspacetime · 19/11/2024 10:30

TempestTost · 19/11/2024 10:26

I will be honest, I did think there is something slightly fishy about this incident even before Pluvia's comment. I would be a little wary before donating any money. I don't think Pluvia's posting history suggests her having an issue with GC lesbians either, unless I am thinking of the wrong person.

You're being rather coy. Maybe put your money where your mouth is for the benefit of those of us who don't know about JW or the Filia incident?

Pluvia · 19/11/2024 09:54

I suppose you think Maya Forstater was attracting trouble, and no doubt Roz Adams too.

Now you're being childish, which makes me wonder... I've met Maya and Roz, as well as Jenny. I contributed to their crowdfunders. They're not grifters.

I'm a lesbian. I know people who know Jenny Watson very well, one who worked with her. I will not be contributing to a crowdfunder and nor will a great many lesbians who are acquainted with her. I've never known a woman attract so much trouble and get so much publicity and support, some of it financial, as a result.

Interested in hearing more, please, so I can be better informed? Particularly, how she was attracting trouble on this occasion.

Doesn't mean you can use said belief to cause trouble at a bar or anywhere else for that matter.

It wasn't long ago a man with such beliefs put joke-pronouns as his email signature in his Council job in some sort of "protest" and refused to remove them. The outcome of that was he was fired, he then took the Council to court and lost and had to pay a big fine.

I'd also be interested in hearing how she was causing trouble, please, so I can clarify my opinion on this case. Thank you.

Several pp’s have asked how she was causing trouble. Do you really think that women with ‘problematic views’ shouldn’t be allowed to go out for a drink @Christinapple because that would be ‘causing trouble’?
You might think that’s a reasonable view, but I’m sure other readers can see the misogyny

It's not that long ago (2019, in fact) that a group of lesbians sitting on chairs were booted out of a venue for being, er, lesbians sitting on chairs.

You don't actually have to do anything wrong to attract the ire of these lunatics. You just have to sit there quietly, being a lesbian.

That's exactly what Chris thinks.

Women who won't chant the mantra should stay home on the urinary leash, while the Stunning and Brave MK2 Women (the penisy kind) live their best LARP in women's spaces. Supported by a cast of simpering handmaidens.

This is the Progressive and Inclusive Way, and fuck all those boring cunty women who won't play pretend.
