It sounds like an activist 'teacher' who led the school's LGBT group was the one responsible. Other teachers, thankfully, had more sense, and were rightly horrified. I wonder whether there will be any disciplinary action, and whether questions will be asked about the LGBT group. I'd hope the headteacher and governing body would be on it.

A large part of the problem, in m view, is that these LGBT groups often get kudos for their activities - and of course there's the Stonewall approval effect.

I'm trying not to out myself, so keeping this vague as possible, even though I'm now retired.

In the time that I was in middle management, I was perplexed at the changes from LGB positivity to the emphasis on gender identity and transitioning.

A school down the road from us got a great deal of publicity for their approved LGBT group because an exceptionally famous person visited and spoke to the kids. It even featured on national tv.

Our HT was challenged by a local councillor for not having the school displaying LGBT posters and flags around the school. He commented that a certain other school close by didn't display them either. "Yes, but it's different for them..."

The difference was that the other school was a Catholic school.

I think that the tide is turning now, but I have friends who were non-Catholic but sought places in Catholic schools because the emphasis there was still on education. I only have experience of having taught in a Catholic school once. Ditto, my late husband.

Our experience was that there was a push for all children to do their best academically. The one matter that did give me pause, I admit, is that both schools used Spike Milligan's "Unto Us" for English lit. Mind you, the non-denominational school that I attended in the 1970s used the same poem.

In England, Breast binding is considered a form of child abuse by the Police.

“Breast ironing (also called breast flattening) is when young girls' breasts are damaged over time to flatten them and delay their development. Sometimes, an elastic belt, or binder, is used to stop them from growing.”

“Although there's no specific law within the UK around breast ironing, it's a form of child abuse”

Hmmm. Daily Record. Scottish equivalent of The Sun.

It isn't. But even if it were the report is correct.

Hmmm. Daily Record. Scottish equivalent of The Sun.

Nonetheless perfectly able to report facts, which seems to be the case here.

I was about to say that Bannerman has quite a high profile when it comes to social media...but I've just checked and their main Twitter account has gone. It says "suspended", but I'm assuming that the SLT has pulled the plug on it for the moment.

Their other accounts are still there for the moment.

NPET · 12/11/2024 23:26

Isn't Bannerman a song by Blue Mink?

MrsOvertonsWindow · 12/11/2024 22:24

Our children have no chance in the face of these dangerous zealots do they? This should be a disciplinary matter - instead you've got the paedophile scandal hit LGBTYS group with their grubby hands all over this. 😡

Daysleeperagain · 12/11/2024 22:12

The teachers going along with it are a disgrace, well done to the teachers who spoke out. The statement from Glasgow Council was pathetic and if that is how spineless they really are, no wonder some teachers think they can push any dangerous ideology they wish to.

INeedAPensieve · 12/11/2024 21:58

This is horrifying, just what were those teachers thinking agreeing to this?

miri1985 · 12/11/2024 21:49

I have such a clear memory of reading Wild Swans as a teenager and being horrified and asking my Mum if foot binding had actually happened

SoiledMyselfDuringSomeTurbulence · 12/11/2024 21:25

I do not understand why anyone would think this was a good idea.

In the Times too:

If it makes the Guardian will you consider reading it?

If it comes on my local TV news tonight, i might take a look. I don't live in Glasgow but our local news covers Glasgow.

Not saying there's no truth in it but I'm always a bit sceptical of any media reporting tbh. Especially the Record.

I don't normally read the Guardian but i'd trust the Guardian before The Record for sure.

That's what I thought 😂

Maybe it was a "before" picture.

Indeed. It looks like a not very effective sports bra.

LoobiJee · 12/11/2024 21:15

I note the article obfuscates how harmful the breast binders are by referring to the breast binders as “trans binders”.

And I note the rather coy mention of “trans tape”. Which I assume refers to the “tit tape” used by women who have to wear revealing garments or the nipple tape used by marathon runners.

Great minds, etc 😄

Well done those teachers for kicking off.

And I appreciate the DR saying "girls who identify as boys"

Lastly I know binders are harmful and not funny but I did think the pic of the binder ad was ridiculous. If that's supposed to be advertising a product that hides your boobs it's not a very good ad.

Does this mean that it isn't true?

JazzyJelly · 12/11/2024 19:55

Those poor girls. I hated growing breasts as a child because they meant men and boys said horrible things to me, and touched me without my consent. But this isn't the answer.

It is being widely reported. This was the article that happened to appear in my Google feed.
