Just seen on X. #TERFDayofVisibility proposed for 10th October because it's X X in Roman numerals. Suggested that women in support all over the world should wear red. Symbolic but also not as political as suffragette colours for those who need to be careful at work. I think I'll give this a go. https://x.com/sappholives83/status/1837232379179544598?t=wUUgCHATTW_qZ2O6c4z8NQ&s=19

Sorry if you think I'm being obtuse - I just hate the thought of women being excluded while trying to empower them (if that makes sense). 😔

tbh sounds more like trying to find a way that women can't or shouldn't be doing something. Nitpicky.

That's how it comes across, anyway.

Snowypeaks · 23/09/2024 11:07

I believe "intersex" is the term used in North America to describe the small subset of VSDs/DSDs which result in ambiguous-looking genitalia at birth. (Most VSDs are not of this type.) As I hope we all know by now, no-one is actually a mixture of the sexes, or both, or neither. We have been asked on this board by a spokeswoman for people living with DSDs/VSDs not to describe them as intersex, which is why we don't use the term.

Anyhoo...10th October is in my diary and I will spread the word. Thanks, OP.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 23/09/2024 11:05

I also look great in red WinkGrin

Ereshkigalangcleg · 23/09/2024 11:03

There is no "ideal" term, and people will always criticise whichever one is chosen. I think it's a great idea and follows on from the Olympics solidarity signal.

Neinneinnein · 22/09/2024 13:35

I'm not saying anything 'isn't fair' though. I'm saying that the term isn't ideal. It's not nitpicking or derailing, it's show how some males may think it includes them and/or females think it excludes them.
I'm all for biological women taking back the term woman, please don't doubt that!

So TRAs have taken “woman” and now “female” too, we’re not allowed to use XX according to you because some absolutely tiny minority of women might feel excluded from that. So what do you suggest we call ourselves? the-people-formerly-known-as-women-who are female-and-have-vaginas-real-ones-not-the-special-neo-designers-ones-that-are-so-much-better-than-the-original-cunty-kind ? Any other ideas?

Not to be pedantic, but some women aren't XX, as already stated (Turner Syndrome).
There is also a condition called Klinefelter syndrome - the presence of the Y gives male characteristics however they also have XX which results in feminine aspects. These people are often labelled intersex.
I get the idea of standing up for biological females, just not sure XX is the way to go.

You absolutely ARE being pedantic.

LaerealSilverhand · 23/09/2024 10:42

@MarieDeGournay 'intersex' is not rejected by all, or even most, people with DSDs. In the UK it's still widely used and in fact the biggest charity/support group for people with DSDs in the UK (ICON) specifically uses it. The preferred term for many people with these conditions is I/VSC (Intersex/Variations of Sexual Characteristics) which is what ICON use.

Nice!

I'll make sure I wear something close to red on the day 😄

Yup, definitely looking more Chinese

uncutdiamonds · 23/09/2024 10:04

Neinneinnein · 22/09/2024 11:05

What about women with Turners Syndrome? They have one full X and either a missing or partial second X chromosome? They are definitely considered women.

So you're saying it should be XX+?

You know Double Ten is symbolized by ++?

😂

Don't know what's going on with the username of the artist though, kind of icky tbh.

I'm scrabbling around trying to imagine what kind of accident would lead to the loss of a vagina, that tweet can only have been written by someone who hasn't got a fucking clue what a vagina is.

Well, quite!
"I was 'bombing' in a marine life centre and just as I hit the water, my vagina fell out and a shark snaffled it before I could pick it up! Bummer..."?

"I disassembled my vagina to give it a good clean and oiling but it squirted out of my hands and out of the bathroom window and landed on the head of a dog, who panicked and ran away! Bummer..."?

"I was practising an aria from the well-known opera Die Valkyrie, when a bat flew into the sitting room and was instantly killed by my high C! Desperate to conceal my crime (bats are a protected species), I stuffed the dead bat into the first thing I saw - my vagina, which was sitting handily on the chest of drawers - and popped my bat-filled vagina into one of the drawers! But now I can't remember which one I put it in! Bummer...

Something like that? I'm struggling here... But at least I've involved animals, which is always good.

Delurking to say I have tears down my face and sore cheeks from laughing too hard 😂😂😂😂😂😂

Soooooooooooo many people don't seem to know what a vagina is. I mean the idea of losing a vulva in a freak accident is baffling enough but at least you can see it. So conceivably, at least in theory, it could be accidentally ripped off... I mean it's far-fetched.... An accident with a shredder/paper-cutting guillotine when leaning fowards too enthusiastically, at an unfortunate angle?

But the vagina.... just.... how?!

(Edited for typo: forwards, not towards)

NoBinturongsHereMate · 22/09/2024 17:50

Any relevant 'accident' I can think of would headline that year's Things people stuck in their orifices article in every medical journal's xmas edition.

Annotated1 · 22/09/2024 15:41

Yes definitely being a bit pedantic… but we also have the Triple X lot. That’s XXX chromosomes and is more common than we think and often undiagnosed. My daughter has this and she is definitely female.

Off to rummage in my cupboard to find something suitable. I don't have a lot of red but there will be something.

Frankensteinian · 22/09/2024 15:21

Great idea!! I’ll do it

Does anyone else remember the infamous 'what if you lost your vagina in an accident' tweet from a few years back?
This was a real tweet??? Blimey, I mean "in an accident"? The mind boggles.

Anyway, back to the topic I will rustle up something red to wear, red is also the Chinese lucky colour, could prove to be a lucky day.

I haven't once said Klinefelters patients aren't men or don't present looking male. I said they have XX (alongside the Y) and they sometimes define themselves as 'intersex' - it follows that some of them (especially those chosing to live as women) may think they can include themselves in XX day.
I'm not saying I think they should, I'm saying I'd not be surprised, being as many men are already trying to get themselves into women's spaces!
I'm also not 'using' anyone.

Edited

Same here. These people have Y chromosomes. They are not female.

TheCultureHusks · 22/09/2024 14:47

I would think that given the general feeling that folk with DSDs are absolutely sick of being force-teamed with T, then overall there would be support for initiatives like this.

And re Turners, the point is that women with Turners Syndrome do not have Y chromosomes. Their XX may be compromised by the condition but they are not XY.

Yes but they are struggles because they are men. I didn't say he doesn't have struggles he does. I only said he's a man his extra x doesn't change that. Do not use people with a dsd in this way.
